A strong commitment to education and a belief in the importance of

serving society fuel Alice Lui’s professional life and her support of Washington University in St. Louis.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in economics from Washington University, Lui held positions at Arthur Andersen and Rockhurst Management before joining Goldman Sachs, where she spent 10 years as an investment manager in Hong Kong and Singapore.

She left the financial industry in 2001 to focus on Bloom Academy, a learning center she co-founded in Hong Kong with her sister. The academy offers tutoring and workshops in creative writing, critical thinking, problem solving, and communication for primary and secondary students.

Lui is a committed volunteer for Washington University. She is a former member of the Alumni Board of Governors and participated in the Alumni Parents Admission Program, helping to recruit and interview prospective students. She served as chair of the Alumni Club in Hong Kong and co-chair of the 10th Reunion for her class. She recently joined the university’s International Advisory Council for Asia.

“I am grateful to have attended Washington University on a scholarship made possible by generous donors. I am now continuing their legacy of giving by helping to create opportunities for a new generation of students to experience all the university has to offer. Nothing is more satisfying than making a difference in someone’s life,” says Lui.

Endowed in 2009, the Lui Family Scholarship for Hong Kong is awarded to undergraduate students in Arts & Sciences.

How the Challenge Works

The Lui Family Scholarship Challenge for Hong Kong will match all new, increased, or renewed annual gifts from alumni, parents, and friends who reside in Hong Kong, until the $50,000 challenge is met. Gifts may be designated to the school, program, or scholarship of your choice.

The Lui Family Scholarship Challenge for Hong Kong

Alice Lui, AB ’89, has established a $50,000 challenge to encourage new and increased gifts from alumni, parents, and friends of

Washington University who reside in Hong Kong. This generous challenge supports the Annual Fund, a vital component of Leading Together: The Campaign for Washington University.

Each year, tuition and income from endowments covers only a portion of the university’s operating budget. The Annual Fund is essential to help bridge the gap. The unrestricted resources provided by the Annual Fund allow the university to invest in new initiatives and respond immediately where need is the greatest.

Gifts to the Annual Fund support the university’s most important priorities:

• Scholarships and fellowships• Faculty teaching and research• Student research• Student life• Technology and the libraries• The learning environment
