A B O U T A N T H O N YAnthony Ervin is the fastest swimmer on the planet. Ervin struck gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics, making history by reclaiming the Olympic title he first won as a teenager at the 2000 Sydney Games. After his win in Sydney, Ervin retired from the sport to find himself, setting off on a journey that was part spiritual quest, part self-destructive bender, involving Zen temples, motorcycles, tattoo parlors, and rock ‘n’ roll. Through this journey, Ervin explored a slew of identity labels that had plied his entire career: African-American yet passes for White, Jewish yet celebrates Christmas, the diagnosis of Tourette Syndrome, and the “rebel Olympian” image bolstered by auctioning off his 2000 gold medal to donate the proceeds to 2004 tsunami relief.

In 2012, after being away from the sport for over a decade, Ervin resurfaced to make not only the U.S. Olympic team but to swim faster than ever before. In Rio this year, his circuitous comeback was complete: the oldest swimmer to win a gold in any individual race, he once again earned the title of fastest human in water.

Peut-être est-ce parce qu’il est californien et qu’on associe à cet étatde la côte ouest américaine une «coolitude» naturelle propre à unepopulation de surfers, qu’Anthony Ervin paraît si calme et réfléchi.Ca pourrait aussi venir de sa tenue. A mi-chemin entre celle d’unrockeur et d’un intellectuel, avec de petites lunettes rondes qui lui

confèrent des airs de premier de classe, des Converse aux couleurs du drapeauaméricain avec des symboles de paix aux pieds et des tatouages plein les bras. Oupeut-être le nageur de 35 ans est-il tout simplement dans le cirage, après être arrivéle matin-même depuis les USA. Quoi qu’il en soit, l’homme aux quatre médaillesolympiques, dont trois en or, met en effervescence la petite assemblée réunievendredi matin pour présenter la première édition de la Swim Cup, qui se déroulerasamedi et dimanche à Lausanne, en présence d’une armada de nageurs de hautniveau (lire encadré).

«J’ai été invité à la Maison Blanche», s’excuse presque Anthony Ervin, qui n’en étaitpas à sa première expédition à Washington sur requête du couple présidentielObama. «On a fait les célébrations pour Hanukkah. En avance, parce que cette annéeça commence au Réveillon de Noël et qu’à ce moment-là tout le monde aura quitté legouvernement. Voilà pourquoi je ne suis arrivé qu’aujourd’hui (vendredi), au lieud’hier, comme prévu.» Juif pratiquant, Ervin? «Ma mère n’arrête pas de me dire queje suis juif. Moi, je crois en plein de chose, donc je suis croyant. Je suis àl’intersection de plein de croyances. J’ai beaucoup étudié, beaucoup lu de choses etpour l’instant je cueille aux arbres ce qui me parle. Je ne pense pas que Hanukkahsoit la fête la plus importante du judaïsme, mais aux Etats-Unis elle l’est et elleconcerne la liberté religieuse. L’illumination pour éliminer l’obscurité», ajoute celuiqui a notamment trouvé son équilibre dans le bouddhisme zen.

…You may remember Ervin. He won gold in the 50m freestyle back in Sydney in 2000, tying in a dead heat with the great Gary Hall Jr. Ervin was only 19 at the time. The next year he won the sprint double at the World Championships in Fukuoka. It was not long after that he decided he wanted to see a little more of what life had to offer. "When you strive for something and do well, it's always going to be a double-edged sword," Ervin explained. "You reach your goals but you get cut in the process." He did one more major competition – the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in 2002 – and then he dropped out, from stardom, from sport and from Berkeley, where he had a swimming scholarship.
