Understanding the Text

A key reading skill is the ability to understand the gist of the writing: what is

its overall message? With your partner discuss:

1. Who is writing the article? What evidence do you have?

2. Who is the audience? What evidence do you have?

3. Is the style formal or informal? What evidence do you have?

4. Where do you imagine this would be published?


• With your partner write no more than 10 sentences to

summarise the article.

• Do this without checking your dictionary.

Opinion

Financial statements should detail assets, liabilities, equity, income and

expenses.

It is in a list with other nouns. Income means money we earn, expenses

are things we must pay. The word financial means to do with money. A

financial statement is a document writing about a company’s money.

Therefore equity may be something a company owns that is worth

money?
