Speakers Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram was Called to the English Bar in July 1969 by the Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn. He was Called to the Malaysian Bar in May 1970 and practised law until his elevation to the Court of Appeal in September 1994. He is the first practitioner in Malaysia to be elevated directly to an Appellate Court. He was elevated to the Federal Court in 2009. He retired in 2010. He is an Honorary Bencher of Lincoln's Inn. Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram Ms. Liza Chan Sow Keng graduated from the University of Wales, Institute of Science and Technology, Cardiff in 1980, and was admitted as a barrister of Lincoln’s Inn in 1981. In 1982, she was admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya and has been in active practice for 31 years. She frequently appears in the Appellate Courts and High Court . Her main areas of practice are commercial, company, arbitration and family law. Recognising the difficulties faced by young lawyers in the courts, this seminar seeks to address various areas of concern that may assist to improve the standard by training young lawyers or prosecutors how to master the art of advocacy in the courts. It will also address the various issues including the lack of adequate preparation in cases, unfamiliarity in addressing the court and the difficulties perhaps in convincing the Judges to distinguish precedents and applying the same based on the facts of the case. In 1973, Dato’ Mah joined the Judicial and Legal Services of Malaysia and held, among others, the posts of President of the Sessions Court, Deputy Public Prosecutor and Senior Federal Counsel of the Civil Claims Division. He left service in 1985 and commenced private practice as the principal of Messrs Mah Weng Kwai & Associates. Ms Chan is also actively involved in pro bono work especially in cases of deserted women and children. She is one of the trainers assisting in the Advocacy Training Course organised by the Bar Council’s Professional Standards and Development Committee. She has been sitting as a discipline committee member of the Advocate & Solicitor’s Disciplinary Board for the past 14 years. Dato’ Mah is a past-President of the Malaysian Bar and past-President of LAWASIA, the Law Association for Asia and the Pacific. He was also a member of the Legal Profession Qualifying Board and the Advocates and Solicitors Disciplinary Board, Malaysia. Dato’Mah was appointed a Judicial Commissioner of the High Court of Malaya on 4/1/2010 and as a Judge of the High Court of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur with effect from 10/8/11. Dato’ Mah was elevated to the Court of Appeal on 21/9/12.
