Baker acknowledgescaulfield challenge

Murray Baker has been around the Australasian racing scene for too long to be taking anything for granted.

The Cambridge trainer, these days operating in partnership with Andrew Forsman, couldn’t be any happier with his spring cups hope Mongolian khan (Holy Roman Emperor), who will further his preparation in Saturday’s Gr.1 Caulfield Stakes.

But while the race lacks numbers, Baker said the challenge facing his dual top flight winner would be a stern one.

“It might only be a small field, but there are seven Group One winners in it. The distance will suit him and we’re hoping

for a good run and there will be improvement in him for the Caulfield Cup at 2400 metres.”

Mongolian Khan has performed admirably in his two Australian outings with a close seventh in the Gr.3 Makybe Diva Stakes followed by an excellent fourth in the Gr.1 Underwood Stakes.

“We’ve been very happy with him and at his last start he dipped out of the gate and lost a back plate before he ran on strongly in the straight,” Baker said.

The stable will also be represented on Saturday by dal cielo (nZ) (Per Incanto) in the Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas.

Baker acknowledgescaulfield challenge

“He’s going pretty well and we thought he deserved his chance,” Baker said.

Last season’s Gr.1 Diamond Stakes winner finished fourth when resuming in the Listed Northland Breeders’ Stakes before he was a bold third after making the running in the Gr.3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude in his Australian debut.

“He raced with blinkers on for the first time and he raced quite fiercely,” Baker said. “He’s normally quite a relaxed horse and from barrier eight he won’t be leading this time. He will be up there and he’ll have his chance.”

MuM’s the word for stackhouse in guineas

Jockey Daniel Stackhouse is unbeaten on talented NZ-bred gelding Bassett (nZ) (Savabeel) and hopes to extend that to the biggest win of his career in the

Caulfield Guineas. And if Bassett can win the Group One race at Caulfield

on Saturday it would be extra special for Stackhouse given his mother Vicki is a part-owner of the Peter Moody-trained three-year-old, having taken a share on her son’s recommendation.

“It’s a great thrill and a privilege to have an opportunity to ride in the Caulfield Guineas,” Stackhouse said.

“Ever since I first sat on this horse I really liked him and I’ve been aboard in most of his gallops this preparation and last preparation.”

Group One opportunities haven’t come along regularly for Stackhouse but he has netted two placings from seven Group One rides in Australia since venturing to Australia from New Zealand a few years ago.

Gr. 1 Caulfield Guineas contender Bassett with Daniel Stackhouse aboard

He was second in the Australasian Oaks in 2013 on the Moody-trained Grand Daughter (Redoute’s Choice), while he finished third on Golden Archer (Rock Of Gibraltar) in a memorable Lightning Stakes at Flemington when champion Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) led in a trifecta for Moody-trained sprinters.

Stackhouse has ridden Bassett to his two wins at Caulfield, one in May on debut over 1100m and the other first-up this campaign over the same distance on September 19.

Luke Nolen was aboard when the son of Savabeel finished fifth behind Caulfield Guineas favourite Press Statement (Hinchinbrook) in the Group One JJ Atkins Stakes (1600m) in Brisbane in June in his only other start.

Stackhouse considers Bassett the best chance he’s had of winning a Group One despite also admitting the gelding faces a big ask jumping from 1100m to 1600m second-up, something he also did last preparation.

“I think he’s right in it,” Stackhouse said.

“He’s been working well. There’s not a lot of size to him but he’s got a pretty good engine.

“It’s a big ask for any horse to do that (1100m to 1600m) but he’s got such a great temperament and he does switch off.”

Moody admits going from 1100m to 1600m in three weeks is not ideal but said Bassett was a talented horse which deserved his shot at the $1 million race.

rotorua lead-upfor pondarosa Miss’ cup Bid

Pondarosa Miss will continue her Melbourne Cup build-up at Rotorua next weekend

A Melbourne Cup start remains on track for pondarosa Miss (nZ)

(High Chaparral) despite her unplaced run in last Saturday’s Gr.1 Livamol Classic at Hastings.

The Te Awamutu mare was denied clear running when rider Lisa Allpress took a gap inside the final 300m only for the inside horse Blizzard (NZ) (Any Suggestion) to shift out under pressure and the outside horse Farm Boy (NZ) (El Hermano) to lay in.

Co-breeder and part-owner Darrell Hollinshead said Pondarosa Miss had taken no harm from the incident and she had trained as usual this week as she prepares for Saturday week’s newly-named

Pondarosa Miss was leapfrogged by Bart Cummings winner Lets Make Adeal (Red Ransom) and Metropolitan Handicap winner Magic Hurricane (Hurricane Run) last weekend, but moved up two spots after first acceptors on Monday and was poised to go up one more to 39 in the order of entry after it was announced Irish St Leger winner Order Of St George (Galileo) would not be making the trip.

“We’re not too worried really. They fall like nine-pins. Na Botto was about 90 on the order at the same time. Once the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate are run, they will be a few drop away from there,” Hollinshead said.

Pondarosa Miss’ cup preparation is something of an old-school hit-and-run mission, with the Hollinsheads happy to restrict their mare’s lead-up campaign to domestic racing.

“Hopefully she can win at Rotorua, but it’s just the run that she needs and she’ll tighten up with the trip over as well. She’s very much where we want her to be,” Hollinshead said.

Listed Jakkalberry Classic (1950m), formerly known as the Rotorua Challenge Plate.

“She’s come through Hastings well. She’s good. We just got chopped in half - she was lucky to stay on her feet,” said Hollinshead, whose father Peter trains the High Chaparral five-year-old mare.

“She’ll head to Rotorua and as long as we’re happy, she’ll fly to Melbourne the Wednesday before the cup. We would sooner the Rotorua race was a longer distance, but speaking to [former Matamata trainer] Jason Bridgman, he said a lot of the Melbourne Cup field would be using the Mackinnon Stakes as their lead-up so it’s much the same.”

Pondarosa Miss will be stabled with Bridgman at Pakenham for her Melbourne trip, with the Gr.3 Queens Cup (2600m) at Flemington on November 7 the fallback option should she fail to make the field for the $A6 million Melbourne Cup (3200m) on November 3.

(Savabeel) returned to Roydon Bergerson’s stable this week.

The Savabeel mare was given a break after disappointing first-up on the opening day of the Hastings carnival.

“She looks a million dollars,” Bergerson said. “She did some dressage work while she was with Bryce Newman and has strengthened through the neck and hindquarters.

“She’s just about got her summer coat and is really bright and fresh. She shouldn’t take long to come up again, but we won’t be rushing her.”

Bowman and pasadena girl after another g1

Hugh Bowman will reunite with pasadena girl (nZ) (Savabeel) in the Thousand Guineas when the premier Sydney jockey chases a second-straight win in the Group One race at Caulfield.

Bowman’s only race ride on the Peter Moody-trained Pasadena Girl resulted in victory in the Group One Champagne Stakes in Sydney during the autumn.

Pasadena Girl has barrier seven in a field of 11 for Saturday’s Group One 1600m-feature for fillies, a race Bowman won last year on Amicus (Fastnet Rock). full story here.

Bergerson to get line on spring prospects at hawera

Roydon Bergerson will get a guide to his spring prospects at Hawera on Saturday.

The Awapuni trainer, who had a memorable 2014-15 season, will have five runners - tie Me down (nZ) (Pins), figurac (nZ) (Patapan), postboy (nZ) (Postponed), hank Moody (nZ) (Savabeel) and allstars (nZ) (Captain Rio) - at the feature meeting.

Figurac, Tie Me Down and Hank Moody are resuming and Postboy has had only one run this season. full story here.

Co-trainer Stephen McKee concedes that time is against the impressive debut winner getting to the Gr.1 Sothys NZ 2000 Guineas, but he hasn’t entirely ruled it out either.

“The Guineas is probably too soon, although it will depend on his next start,” he said. full story here.
