2015/16 WINNIPEG SHOW PROGRAMS

GISELLEChoreography Peter Wright, after Jules Perrot, Jean Coralli and Marius PetipaMusic Adolphe AdamScenery & Costume Design Peter FarmerLighting Design Nicholas Cernovitch

Hailed as one of the greatest of all ballets and a supreme achieve-ment of the Romantic era, it has captivated audiences worldwide since its premiere in Paris in 1841.

A broken heart and shattered dreams, drives the virtuous village girl Giselle to her untimely death. In the moonlit forest, she joins the spirit world of the Wilis – vengeful spirits of abandoned brides. When Giselle’s remorseful lover Albrecht visits her grave, only her undying love can save him from the Wilis’ bewitching, deathly dance.

Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s traditional production will take you on a breathtaking journey of Giselle’s heart-wrenching tale of love, contrition and forgiveness.

ROYAL WINNIPEG BALLET PRESENTS

PAUL TAYLOR DANCE COMPANYESPLANADE Music Johann Sebastian Bach Costumes John Rawlings

COMPANY B Music Sung by the Andrews Sisters Costumes Santo Loquasto

PIAZZOLLA CALDERA Music Astor Piazzolla and Jerzy Peterburshsky Sets and Costumes Santo Loquasto

Lighting for all Jennifer Tipton

The world-renowned Paul Taylor Dance Company makes its Winnipeg debut with three powerful works. Hailed as the world’s greatest living choreographer, Paul Taylor makes dances that comment on aspects of society such as war, spirituality, sexuality, and morality and explore the beauty of movement.

Set to Bach violin concertos and acclaimed as “a classic of American Dance” by The New Yorker upon its premiere 40 years ago, Esplanade displays the vitality of youth, the anguish of a dysfunctional family and the romantic connection between lovers. Company B juxtaposes the exuberance of Americans post-Depression, as heard in the pop songs of the Andrews Sisters, with the tragedy of men who never returned from World War II. Piazzolla Caldera ignites the stage with the fiery passions of tango set to the music of Astor Piazzolla and Jerzy Peterburshsky. Clement Crisp of the Financial Times of London calls Piazzolla Caldera “one of Taylor’s most astonishing creations.”

NUTCRACKERChoreography Galina Yordanova & Nina MenonMusic Pyotr Ilyich TchaikovskyCostume Paul DaigleScenic Design Brian PerchalukLighting Design Michael J. Whitfield

This sparkling holiday tradition is a festive feast for the senses with enchanting costumes, timeless choreography and a brilliant score by Tchaikovsky. Nutcracker features endearing Canadian scenes like a snowy pond hockey game and a battle on Parliament Hill. What could be more fun for the family than to join young Clara’s Christmas fantasy, where toys come to life, the Sugar Plum Fairy spreads her magic, mischievous Filbert the Bear steals the Christmas pudding and where Hazel the Polar Bear and her twelve furry polar cubs will surely warm your heart. A holiday classic for the whole family!
