34. SWOC Analysis of the Department & Future Plans
Strength:
1. Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics Department is one of the most active
departments of the college.
2. Well qualified & dedicated faculty.
3. Bright, sincere & hard working students.
4. Arrangement of remedial classes and mock tests every year irrespective of
regular examinations.
5. Regular arrangement of Students‘ Seminars in the department where each
student is given an opportunity to explain the topic of their choice from
32
their syllabus, with the help of visual aids, followed by an interactive
session, which prepares them for their higher studies & develops
confidence in them.
6. Special Lectures are arranged in the department based on the syllabus
where eminent persons from the field share their knowledge & expertise
with the students.
7. Supplementary classes are also taken by the teachers to solve the doubts of
the students after completion of the syllabus.
8. Question bank is provided to the students & they are encouraged to solve
the questions and get it corrected by respective teachers for better results.
9. Regular evaluation of student‘s knowledge through class tests &
assignments to keep the students up-to-date about the topics taught in
class.
10. After every Mid-term Examination, Guardians‘ Meeting is conducted to
make the parents aware of their ward‘s academic performance. Guardian
feedback is also taken about the department & their grievances, if any, are
noted for careful consideration.
11. Mock tests are held before the Final University Examinations to help the
academically weaker students to produce better result in the final
examination.
12. In order to develop social awareness & sense of social responsibility
among students, they are encouraged to participate in social outreach
programmes such as blood donation camp, ―Ekta Divas‖ campaign, visit
to orphanages, cancer awareness programmes, etc.
13. The students of the department always contribute to College Annual
Magazine with writings based on different topics related to their subjects.
14. In order to broaden the horizon of their knowledge, the students of our
department are also encouraged to actively participate in various seminars
& workshops, project surveys, field visits, debate/ poster/lecture
competitions, fests, etc.
15. Apart from this, our students are also encouraged to actively participate in
a myriad of different extra-curricular activities like cultural programmes,
sports, painting, recitation, quiz, exhibition, etc.
Weakness:
1. Lack of space for conducting classes due to poor infrastructure
2. Non availability of projectors for power point presentations makes the use
33
of visual aids for teaching limited.
3. Lack of a computer in the department makes it difficult for students to
complete their projects & assignments
4. Major degree makes it difficult for students to avail higher degree course
in many colleges/ universities
5. Permanent faculty is needed to conduct the vocational course smoothly.
Opportunity:
1. Increasing demand& bright future prospects for nutrition course.
2. They can show-case their talents in the Science Exhibitions, poster
prsentations, etc. organized by the department as well as the college from
time to time.
3. Annual sports of the college is a great platform for students‘ participation.
4. A very good Library facility with quite a huge number of books relevant
to the UG syllabus of Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics is available for the
students. Both college fund & UGC fund is granted to the department
every year for purchasing such books. Apart from this, Book Bank Facility
is provided to economically weak students. From this year onwards, the
library has allotted books to be kept & issued from the department for easy
availability of books to the students. Students can do the research work
using the internet facility available in the library.
5. Campusing facility is available for the students.
6. They can show-case their talents in the Science Exhibitions, poster
prsentations, inter college debate competitions, etc. organized by the
department as well as the college from time to time.
7. Students have the opportunity to contribute to the College Annual
Magazine as well as Academic Journal with writings based on different
topics related to their subjects.
8. The students get the opportunity to participate in different social activities
organized by the college.
Challenge:
1. Conducting classes within limited space & resources.
2. Motivating the students to take up a major course instead of Honours.
3. To ensure that the students can secure more promising results.
4. All the students securing first class marks.
5. If space can be made available in the near future we hope to introduce
Honours course in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics which is not available in
any college/ university in Kolkata.
34
Future Plans:
1. To motivate the students & faculties to take up courses in collaboration
with other universities/ industries/ foreign institutions in order to increase
their expertise & knowledge level.
2. To motivate the faculties to take up research projects
3. To organize a symposium/seminar/conference/workshop in the department
in order to enrich knowledge of the students.

The present syllabus for Economics Honours (valid form 2010) as
prescribed by the University of Calcutta makes it compulsory for students to write
a term paper in the last year of the course on topics covered in the syllabus. They
are guided accordingly by the full-time faculty in research methodology,
preparing the drafts and then completing the papers.
The department makes an effort to engage students in such activities by
organizing excursions and visitations to sites that can be of academic interest for
the students.
49
The Department of Economics organized a session of paper
presentation by the students of the department on 25th
April 2014. The
presentation ended with a question answer session.
On 22 March 2014, a one-day Workshop on gender sensitization was
organized by the college in collaboration with SAMAGAM –an NGO working
with legal aid and awareness in Kolkata. Students of the Economics Department
staged a play on counseling and legal aid for rape victims written and directed by
them.
Special lectures are arranged and well-known academicians add new
dimensions to the topic of the syllabus, particularly the topics that are covered
under Indian Economics. This helps the students in developing an in-depth
understanding of the many problems and prospects of development faced by a
country as diverse as ours. Visiting scholars also counsel the students on how to
prepare for advanced learning and undertake research studies. The following
special lectures were arranged by the department in 2008-13
1. Special Lecture by Dr. Anita Chattopadhyay, Associate Professor,
Dept. of Economics, Muralidhar Girls‘ College –

worked as data collectors in the ongoing College Project ―VIRTUAL‖ or
―ACTUAL‖. The Preferred Reality of our Urban Youth.
Students are encouraged to put up wall magazines which helps them to study
a particular topic in detail and presenting it intelligently and creatively. Topics
researched and summed up are generally the pertinent world economic issues
including those which are Indian.

The following is a list of their efforts:
Stagflation (2012)
Nehru‘s vision of Industrialization in India (2013)
33. (a) The basic teaching method used by the faculty are lectures delivered
extempore and illustrated on the blackboard or on the computer using internet
facility. Relevant reference materials and notes are add-ons to the lectures and
greatly facilitate the preparation for the final examinations.
(b) Class tests to assess students‘ progress
(c) Doubt-clearing sessions
(d) Lesson revisions
(e) Remedial classes for weak students
(f) Mock tests to prepare students for the final examinations
(g) Supplementary classes for the 3rd
year students through the month of
February and supplementary classes for the 1st and 2
nd year students as
required after the completion of selection tests.
34. Students involvement in outreach programmes:
Students of the Third Year went to separate schools run for the
physically-challenged and under – privileged children on 26th
November, 2013
and 26th
November, 2014, respectively and made them gifts of clothing, food stuff
and sports goods.
Students attended the Environment Day Seminar held in 2014 and
participated in the question-answer session.
Students participate in the College Day cultural programme, annual
competitions and all occasions of special observances held throughout the year in
the college.
Blood Donation Camp is organized every year usually to mark the
death anniversary of Founder Principal S.E. Rani Ghosh and students participate
as volunteers and donors.
35. Departmental SWOC analysis
Strengths the main strength of the Department lies in its sincere efforts towards
imparting a proper understanding of the subject of economics to the students.
Each year quite a few students enroll who do not have Economics as subject at the
+2 level and yet surprisingly they do come out with flying colours at the end of
51
the course securing high first class marks, all because of the extremely dedicated
efforts made by the entire faculty. There is almost 100% success rate in the final
examinations as evident from the pass percentage figures given in Table 26.
Ensuring that students qualify for higher academic studies and become eligible for
good jobs is also a strength imparted to the department by the faculty. Teaching a
lengthy and difficult syllabus in time every year is a hard-earned success for the
department. Each year a good number of students succeeds in getting admission
in renowned institutions like JNU, IGIDR, Madras School of Economics and
Symbiosis School of Economics, Pune.
Weaknesses The basic weakness lies in the perceived lack of more teaching hours
and some inability of the department to distribute the syllabus adequately to
teachers who are specially qualified in teaching some of the more recently added
chapters in the syllabus. he college does not offer Statistics as an elective subject.
This acts as a disincentive for the students aspiring to get admission in
Economics, because both the graduate level course and advanced post-graduate
courses use different statistical methods intensively.
Opportunities An advantage lies in the fact that the department can now access
the internet facility and look to enhance the teaching-learning process. Opening a
departmental library has ensured quick and ready availability of reference books
and reading material for the students.
Challenges Challenges are quite a few. First of all is the heavily mathematical
and analytically difficult syllabus. Second, time acts as a big constraint. Third,
there are the additional commitments – participation in all co-curricular activities,
while coping with the heavy syllabus. Fourth, is ensuring that all students of the
third and last year of course finish writing a proper and original dissertation paper
and appear for the viva voce in time. However, the department takes extra effort
in helping students undertake primary surveys for their dissertation papers in the
final year of the course, although primary survey is not mandatory.

33. Teaching methods adopted to improve student learning :
Audio-visual presentations, student seminars, paper presentations,
classroom activities like quiz, interactive sessions, peer teaching.
34. Participation in Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR) and Extension
activities : Different Clubs, Blood Donation, Social Outreach
Programme, NSS.
35. SWOC analysis of the department and future plans :
Strength :
Most of the Faculty Members are involved in academic work/research
and have published extensively thereby enriching the teaching-learning
culture of the department.
The faculty incorporates innovative methods of teaching like
offering presentations, making students write papers, make audio-visual
presentations, arrange exhibitions on syllabus-prescribed areas andbeyond.
Weakness :
As vacancies have not been filled the teacher-student ratio is not up to our
satisfaction. The commitment of Guest Lecturers, though unquestionable,
can hardly be equal to that of a full-time incumbent as they have other
academic commitments elsewhere as well.
Though the Department has a computer of its own with Net connection,
modern teaching processes could have been better incorporated. A Smart
classroom could have helped in making the teaching-learning situation
more attractive.
Opportunity :
There is scope for improvement in introducing more innovations in
classroom teaching practices, and exploitation of extra-mural potential to
enrich the teaching-learning experience.
As mentioned earlier, a Smart board could definitely improve the quality
of teaching by facilitating a participatory and interactive mode of
77
knowledge-sharing.
More scholars and writers could be invited to offer talks, presentations
and lectures, and conduct workshops on areas of advanced academic and
creative thought.
Challenge :
The department, being part of the College, also has to face a severe space
constraint, which automatically reduces the scope of activities that can be
incorporated in the teaching-learning process.
The problem of not being able to afford more personal attention to the
students could be better addressed by introducing online teaching as a
support to classroom teaching. This could help compensate partially for
the dearth of teaching faculty in the department.
The departmental library needs more stocks of books to help students
access reference materials of assured quality.
A laptop computer owned by the department, could help increase the
access to films and documentations/interiors of authors/critics/scholars
available on the Net.

35. SWOC analysis of the department and future plans:-
Strength :-
Pass out % is quite satisfactory, computer and Internet facility,
Seminar, library.
Weakness :-
Space crunch, one full- time post vacant.
Opportunity :-
More general subject combinations should be made available for students.
Challenges :-
As West Bengal is a non- HINDI- speaking state, so the number of
students opting Hindi (Hons.) is generally less.
As most of the Hindi (Hons.) students are Hindi speaking (mother tongue
HINDI), so it is difficult for them to attempt the General subjects taught in
English or Bengali medium.

32. The present syllabus for Histoy Honours as prescribed by the University
of Calcutta does not offer any scope for independent research by the
students or excursion to places of historical interest. Yet, the Department
makes an effort to engage students in such activities and undertakes
value – added programmes for their enrichment :
In February, 2009 students were taken to visit an exhibition on the
History of Printing Press in Bengal, arranged by the School of Cultural
Texts and Records, Jadavpur Universtity at ICCR, Kolkata. Subsequently
students wrote an article on this topic for the College magazine.
In December, 2009, the Third Year students were taken to the Town Hall
Kolkata, which is now a museum showcasing the history of Kolkata.
94
On 22 March 2014, SAMAGAM – an NGO working to spread legal aid
and awareness about Gender abuse, held a one-day Workshop in the
College auditorium and students of the History Honours staged a play on
Evils of Child Marriage, written and directed by Doyel Chakraborty of
Third Year.
Special lectures are arranged whenever possible and visiting scholars
address students on how they can expand the boundaries of their
classroom teaching – learning.
In March, 2013 Professor Madhuparna Kumar of University of Calcutta
(Dept. of Ancient History and Culture) and a former student of History
Dept. of this College delivered a lecture. On this occasion two Third Year
students each presented a paper on excavation sites – Ria Dey spoke on
excavations at Mogolmari and made a power-point presentation while
Sutithi Bannerji talked about exploring the Chandraketugarh site with
the help of visual aid.
Students‘ projects are undertaken to teach advanced learners research
methodology for future use, and two projects have been completed in the
2008 – 2014 phase :
1) Historians Craft revisited : A Study of the City of Kolkata
2) Women Percieved through Ages in India
Faculty encourages students to participate in INTER-DISCIPLINARY
Projects too, if only as Subjects or Data Collectors. Most of our students
became part of a test group in the Language Recognition Pattern Project of
the Psychology Department in collaboration with University of Oxford in
2012 for which they received certificates; They have also worked as data
collectors in the ongoing College Project – ―VIRTUAL‖ or ―ACTUAL‖ :
The Preferred Reality Of Our Urban Youth.
33. The basic teaching method followed by the faculty is that of lectures
delivered imprompt or in the form of prepared notes. Visual imagery being
an important tool of conjuring up the past, faculty also uses computer and
books to show maps, photographs and paintings occasionally. Wall-
presentations more than projects are found to be an easy, cost-friendly way
95
of involving most of the students in researching a topic and summing up
their findings in a creative way.
The following is a list of their efforts :
Sources of Indian History (2008 – 09)
Asoka‘s Empire (2009 – 10)
Architecture of the Sultanate Period (2012 – 2013)
Sarala Ray and Bramho efforts to empower Women (2011 – 12)
Fathers of History (2012 – 13)
Gandhar Art (2013 – 14)
34. Sarala Ray aimed at creation of complete women-educated, empowered,
socially and politically aware of their milieu. Therefore faculty always
encourages them to get involved in Out reach programmes arranged by the
Institution, for instance :-
1. On December 26, 2013 as well as December 26, 2014 students of the
Third Year went at the behest of the College to two different schools run
for the physically-challenged and under-privileged children with some
succor for them.
2. History Honours students attended the Environment Day Seminar held in
2014 and took part in the Q & A session that followed.
3. Cultural programmes are held throughout the year at our Institution to
mark various occasions and students of History Department take part
regularly. Doyel Chakraborty, now of Third Year has been the lead singer
on quite a few occasions including (1) the year-long Platinum Jubilee
Celebrations and (2) Memorial meetings on the death anniversary of
Founder Principal S.E. Rani Ghosh.
4. Blood donation drive is taken every year usually on the death anniversary
of Founder Principal S.E. Rani Ghosh and here too History Honours
students are active partipants as volunteers and donors.
35.SWOC
Strength of the Department is the total dedication and commitment of
the faculty to improving the performance level of students. A comparison
between entry-point and exit-point marks percentage of students of
96
various departments will vindicate this claim. For slow learners,
teachers take extra classes after regular classes are over thereby
facilitating them to come at par with the rest of the students.
Weakness lies in the perceived lack of utility in studying History so far
as employability is concerned which affects willingness of quality students
from joining. Also the Institution does not offer Post Graduation which
could have served as an incentive.
Opportunity of the Department lies in the fact there has been a recent
addition to our Faculty and along with Guest lecturers, increase in the
number of teachers have enthused us to take on new programmes like
Departmental library E-resources etc.
The Challenges we face is time constraint, the prescribed syllabus is vast
and as Projects, Excursions and Wall-Presentations are not part of the
Syllabus. So there is a constant struggle to complete the course and to
involve the students in co-curricular activities which also contribute to
their knowledge base.

Strength:
Department of Mathematics is one of the most active departments in the
college.
We have a high student-teacher ratio which facilitates imparting
individual care to the students.
Our teaching methodology encourages our students to be more inquisitive
& we are always available to solve any of their doubts regarding the
topics taught.
We often take Surprise tests & Class tests to keep our students up-to-
date about the topics taught in class.
Students are given assignments at weekends and recess and their work
is assessed, explaining their short comings thereafter.
For better understanding of the students, we conduct interactive study
sessions also.
110
Students‟ Seminars are arranged by the department where each student
is given an opportunity to explain the topic of their choice from their
syllabus, by powerpoint presentation or otherwise, followed by an
interactive session, which prepares them for their higher studies &
develops confidence in them. The best speaker is awarded by the
department.
Students also attend other seminars on non-mathematical topics organized
by the other departments of the college (Recently some of the students
participated in a Lecture session organized by the college, entitled
―Imagining Knowledge‖ by Prof. Swapan Chakraborty of Jadavpur
University on 14th
February, 2015 ).
To make the course interesting & to develop a competitive spirit among
the students, the department organizes inter-college mathematical quiz,
elocution competition, poster presentation, etc.
The department also encourages & helps the students to prepare wall
magazine on recent mathematical topics / astounding mathematical
theories & their applications / mathematical paradoxes, to encourage them
to look beyond their syllabus and realise the vast scope of the subject.
Another important aspect of our teaching methodology is that Group
Discussions are encouraged to solve variety of mathematical problems
which enhances their teamwork ability & better understanding of the
syllabus.
The Department arranges Special Lectures (based on the UG syllabus of
CU) by eminent mathematicians for the betterment of the students. Their
valuable lecture notes are collected & distributed to the students.
The department also organizes UGC / NBHM – Sponsored National &
State Level Seminars & all the students actively participate .in these
seminars.
Sometimes the students are taken to other renowned institutions to
attend lectures delivered by eminent mathematicians dealing with the
course syllabus.
Departmental Library facility is available for the students. A
BookBank has been created recently to help the financially weaker
students..
Remedial classes are arranged for the academically weaker students
(students securing less than 40 % in Selection Test).
Supplementary classes are also taken by the teachers to solve the doubts
of the students after completion of the syllabus.
Mock tests are held before the Final University Examinations to help
the students prepare better.
111
Our students are encouraged to actively participate in a myriad of different
extra-curricular activities like music, dance, debate, painting, recitation,
quiz, exhibition , poster presentation, etc.
To develop their social awareness & sense of social responsibility, the
students are encouraged to participate in blood donation camp, ―Ekta
Divas‖ campaign, visit to orphanages, cancer awareness programmes, etc.
Counselling is a part & parcel of our teaching methodology through
which the students are able to share their thoughts & freely discuss their
problems; while the faculty try to analyse their situation and give them
emotional as well as financial support, if necessary to cope up with their
problems. This process also involves parents‘ counselling for those who
overburden & criticize their wards which often manifest as declining
levels of academic performance , due to over- anxiety.
After every Mid-term Examinations Guardian Meeting is conducted to
make the parents‘ aware of their ward‘s academic performance. Guardian
feedback is also taken about the department & their grievances , if any, are
noted for careful consideration.
Our department has a Math. Lab. & it has recently become a Centre for
the Part III Mathematics Honours Practical Examinations of the
University.
Inspite of the heavy work-load of teaching & different committee works,
the faculty of the department try their best to wite papers & articles for
college Academic Journal & other journals,.
The Department has an ongoing Major Research Project funded by
INSA.
The students of the department always contribute to College Annual
Magazine, Miscellany with writings based on different mathematical
topics. The ex-students of the department also contribute to the
Commemorative journal & Academic journals.
The department has recently introduced “Mukul Mohon Ganguly
Memorial Award” given every year to the departmental topper in the
Part-III Mathematics Honours University Examinations.
The students are motivated to appear in different Competitive
Examinations for Banking / MCA (JECA) / MBA / JAM, etc.
Some of the students participate in the campus recruitment programmes
organized by the college and are also selected as trainees in reputed
institutions like TCS, etc.
Our students are well-placed in different institutions like Banks, IT
sectors, LIC, NGO‘s, educational institutions, etc.
112
Weakness:
Our department is too small to accommodate a good number of students.
The Math. Lab. capacity is too small.
There is no separate room for departmental library for reading purposes.
Mathematics Honours students could not be offered pass subject
combinations such as ‗Statistics‘ or ‗Computer Science‘ according to
their demand & they have to remain satisfied with Physics – Chemistry
or, Physics – Economics combinations only.
There is no ICT enabled class-room.
No academic support staff (technical).
Opportunity:
Students get the opportunity to participate in various mathematical events
such as Quiz, Seminars, Workshops , etc. organized by other renowned
educational institutions.
Students have the oppurtinity to contribute to the College Annual
Magazine as well as Academic Journal with writings based on different
mathematical topics.
Students can show & nurture their talents in different intra /inter college
competitions organized by the college as well as the department from time
to time.
They can show-case their talents in the Science Exhibitions , poster
prsentations, etc. organized by the department as well as the college from
time to time.
Students get the scope to participate in the college Annual day
celebrations to nurture their extra-curricular talents in dance, music,
recitation, acting, etc.
Annual sports of the college is also a good platform for students‘
participation.
A very good Library facility with quite a huge number of books relevant
to the UG syllabus of Mathematicsis is available for the students. Both
college fund & UGC fund is granted to the department every year for
purchasing such books.
A BookBank has been created recently to help the financially weaker
students..
Staff & the students get the opportunity to participate in different social
activities organized by the college.
Campusing facility is available for the students.
113
Challenge:
First class marks for almost all the students.
Introduction of Post Graduate course in Mathematics, provided space is
made available.
We want our students to be empowered by the ideals of the founder of our
college, the legendery Ms. Sarala Ray, who stated that ―women should
have education not just for being self-reliant but for developing
themselves into a complete individual who will be able to contribute for
the betterment of mankind‖. We believe that our students will be the
torch-bearers of the rich heritage of our college.

35. SWOC analysis of the department and Future plans:
Strength:
1. Teacher-student ratio is the strength of the Department. Due to the less number
of students, each student gets more attention.
2. Good Departmental Library.
123
3. Total dedication and commitment of the faculty for improving the performance
of the students despite of the less number of permanent faculty members
Weakness:
Students are under the assumption that there are fewer job opportunities in this
field and so are unwilling to take Philosophy as Honours subject which affects
admission of willingness of quality students in this course.
Less number of permanent faculty members.
3. Students with good marks do not want to take Philosophy as their Honours
subject.
Opportunity:
1. Getting internet facility in the Department
2. Getting book-bank facility
3. Departmental Library
4. Though its an assumption that there are very few job facilities after studying
this subject but many new fields have opened, such as counseling courses etc.
Challenge:
1. It is a challenge for the Department to admit students with 50% aggregate
without any knowledge of the subject and teach them in such a way that they get
minimum 55% at the undergraduate level so that they get admission in University.
2. Completion of huge syllabus prescribed by the University of Calcutta in time is
really a great challenge.

SWOC ANALYSIS
Strength:
Department of Physics is one of the most active departments in the
college.
131
We have a high teacher-student ratio which facilitates imparting individual
care to the students.
Our teaching methodology encourages our students to be more inquisitive
& we are always available to solve any of their doubts regarding the topics
taught.
We often take Surprise tests & Class tests to keep our students up-to-
date about the topics taught in class.
Students are given assignments at weekends and recess and their work is
assessed, explaining their short comings thereafter.
For better understanding of the students, we conduct interactive study
sessions also.
Students‟ Seminars are arranged by the department where each student is
given an opportunity to explain the topic of their choice from their
syllabus, by power point presentation or otherwise, followed by an
interactive session, which prepares them for their higher studies &
develops confidence in them. The best speaker is awarded by the
department.
Students and teachers also participated in lecture workshops organised by
other institutions. (Recently some of the students and teachers participated
in a Lecture workshop on PHYSICS OF ELECTRONICS MATERIALS
organized by Indian National Science Academy (Delhi) , The Indian
Academy of Sciences (Bangalore) , The National Academy of
Sciences of India ( Allahabad) and ST.Xaviers College ( Kolkata) on
2014).
Students also attend seminars on other than physical science topics
organized by the other departments of the college (Recently some of the
students participated in a Lecture session organized by the college,
entitled “Imagining Knowledge” by Prof. Swapan Chakraborty of
Jadavpur University on 14th
February, 2015 ).
The department also encourages & helps the students to prepare wall
magazine on recent activities in physical sciences to encourage them to
look beyond their syllabus and realise the vast scope of the subject.
Another important aspect of our teaching methodology is that Group
Discussions are encouraged to solve variety of mathematical problems
which enhances their teamwork ability & better understanding of the
132
syllabus.
The Department arranges Special Lectures (based on the UG syllabus of
CU) by eminent physicists for the betterment of the students. Their
valuable lecture notes are collected & distributed to the students.
Sometimes the students are advised to participate at other renowned
institutions to attend seminars /lectures delivered by eminent Physicists
dealing with the course syllabus.
Departmental Library facility is available for the students. A Book-
Bank has been created recently to help the financially weaker students by
the college.
Remedial classes are arranged for the academically weaker students
(students securing less than 40 % in Selection Test).
Supplementary classes are also taken by the teachers to solve the doubts
of the students after completion of the syllabus.
Mock tests are held before the Final University Examinations to help the
students prepare better.
Our students are encouraged to actively participate in a myriad of different
extra-curricular activities like music, dance, debate, painting, recitation,
quiz, exhibition, poster presentation etc.
To develop their social awareness & sense of social responsibility, the
students are encouraged to participate in blood donation camp, ―Ekta
Divas‖ campaign, visit to orphanages, cancer awareness programmes etc.
Guardian
feedback is also taken about the department & their grievances, if any, are
noted for careful consideration.
Our departmental Laboratory is one of the Examination Centres for the
Under Graduate Physics Honours and General Practical Examinations of
133
the University.
Inspite of the heavy work-load of teaching & different committee works,
the faculty of the department try their best to write papers & articles for
college Academic Journal & other journals.
The students of the department always contribute to College Annual
Magazine ―Miscellany” with writings based on different science topics.
The department has recently introduced “Sachindranath
Bandyopadhyay Memorial Award” given every year to the departmental
topper in the Part-III Physics Honours University Examinations.
The students are motivated to appear in different Competitive
Examinations for GRE/ MCA / MBA / JAM / Banking etc.
Some of the students participate in the campus recruitment programmes
organized by the college and are also selected as trainees in reputed
institutions like TCS etc.
Weakness:
Our department is too small to accommodate a good number of students.
The capacity of the laboratories is too small.
There is only one separate laboratory for Honours (3rd
yr.) practical
classes.
There is no separate laboratory for computer practical classes.
There is no separate room for departmental library for reading purposes.
Physics Honours students could not be offered pass subject combinations
other than Mathematics – Chemistry.
There is no dedicated ICT enabled class-room yet.
Opportunity:
Students get the opportunity to participate in various events on physical
sciences such as Quiz, Seminars, Workshops etc. organized by other
renowned educational institutions.
Students have the opportunity to contribute to the College Annual
Magazine as well as Academic Journal with writings based on different
science topics.
Students can show & nurture their talents in different intra /inter college
competitions organized by the college from time to time.
They can show-case their talents in the Science Exhibitions, poster
134
presentations etc. organized by the department as well as the college from
time to time.
Students get the scope to participate in the college Annual day
celebrations to nurture their extra-curricular talents in dance, music,
recitation, acting, etc.
Annual sports of the college are also a good platform for students‘
participation.
A very good Library facility with quite a huge number of books relevant
to the UG syllabus of Physics is available for the students. Both college
fund & UGC fund is granted to the department every year for purchasing
such books.
A Book-Bank has been created recently to help the financially weaker
students.
Staff & the students get the opportunity to participate in different social
activities organized by the college.
Recruitment by campus interview is available for the students.
Challenge:
First class marks for all the students.
To make the newly introduced Under Graduate Physics Honours course a
successful one.
Introduction of Post Graduate course in Physics, provided space is made
available.
We want our students to be empowered enough to contribute for the
betterment of society.

35. SWOC analysis of the department and future plans :.
Strength :
The word ―Sanskrit‖ means purified and well-ordered. It is the only
language in which whole India expressed all her thoughts for the last two or
three thousand years. It has united the culture of India and given it a
synchronous form. Keeping it in mind the faculty takes immense personal
care for each and every student so that they may be able to know the Indian
heritage and culture and philosophical thoughts of the Vedic era.
Weakness :
At present there is only one teaching member in this department and the
Sanskrit kanguage is taught only in the general course. Students do not get
opportunity to take Sanskrit language as Honours subject. So students have
no scope for in-depth study.
Opportunity :
Sanskrit is indeed the language not only of Kavya or literature but of all the
Indian sciences. We may classify the literature as Epic and lyric Kavyas, the
Carita Kavyas, the Prasastis, the different types of dramas, the Satakas, the
Stotras, the Champus, the Katha etc. Beside the above classes there are
social and technical siences, such as Natya Sastras, Kamosastras, Ayurveda
Sastras, Chanda Sastra etc. So there are many opportunities for higher
studies in reputed universities, with special focus on research, in India and
abroad.
Challenge :
In our state Sanskrit language is taught as an optional subject in the school
level. So the eagerness to learn Sanskrit language in the College education is
gradually downfall. In spite of that our students love Sanskrit teaching and
the faculty always try to enlighten the students on various aspects of the
course. The faculty aims to continue this effort in the future. It aims to help
the students to farewell in the academic career, to achieve success in life and
to become good citizens in the years to come.
