Clean-up continues in wake of TC HildaSignificant inroads have been made but clean-up efforts are continuing in the wake of TropicalCyclone Hilda.Broome Shire President, Harold Tracey, says Shire staffhave worked tirelessly in difficult conditions to cleanup the town and ensure the community’s safety, andtheir efforts are greatly appreciated.A summary of the damage and clean-up work aroundthe Shire includes:• Cape Leveque Rd suffered major scouring and water
damage on the unsealed section, while the sealedsection also suffered major damage to road edges.The Shire has had two graders and two loadersworking on Cape Leveque Rd which allowed it tobe re-opened last week to 4WDs under 4 tonnes.However, there are a considerable number ofwarning signs posted to advise ofhazards and drivers are requested to take extremecaution.
• The Shire has also issued permits to allow fuel andfood trucks to use the road to take essential suppliesto communities on the Dampier Peninsula and hasworked with the drivers to ensure they have access.
• Around the Broome town site the clean-up has
prioritised clearing and cleaning roads, footpathsand public spaces such as parks of fallen trees,hanging branches, sand and mud, and other safetyhazards.
• The Town Beach precinct was re-opened last Fridayafter considerable hard work to remove fallen treesand hanging branches, remove tree stumps and fill inholes, and repair or remove damaged signage, shadesails, fencing and garden edging.
• Additional damage around town includes scouringof road edges in some areas that will require repair,fallen signage, and fallen goal posts at BRAC.“It’s expected that work to clean up the town sitecould last for another couple of weeks,” Cr Tracey says.Residents are requested to take responsibility forclearing their own yards and verges and depositinggreen waste at the Waste Management Facility asthere will not be capacity for a kerbside green wastecollection.The Shire of Broome has been liaising with its insurersand also expects to make application for WA NaturalDisaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements funding toensure that the cost of the clean-up borne by the Shireof Broome and its ratepayers is minimised.”
Town Beach re-opened last Friday following considerable hard work.
Planning underway for Australia DayPlanning is underway to celebrate Australia Day2018 with a bigger, better community breakfastand family fun day at Town Beach.The event on Friday 26 January from 8am to 1pmincludes breakfast, live music, children’s games andactivities, an Australian Citizenship Ceremony andpresentation of the Community Citizen of the YearAwards.Broome’s hardworking Lions, Lioness and Rotary Clubs,Roebuck Lodge and Men’s Shed will again host theevent and cook breakfast from 8am to 10am, and from10am to 1pm food vans will sell cool drinks, ice creamsand more.The Shire of Broome has come on board to providesupport and entertainment including a line-up oflocal musicians featuring Scott McDougall, MaddiDavies and Friends, Paul Boon and George Bishop,and Dan Guidera; children’s bouncy castle, water slideand battle balls; and the traditional favourite thong-throwing competition.There will be no fireworks event this year afterthe decision was made following the last-minutecancellation of the 2017 event due to bad weather.
Make the most of free garden mulchWith record amounts of green waste beingdeposited in the wake of TC Hilda, residents arebeing encouraged to make the most of free mulch.
Garden mulch is available free of charge from the WasteManagement Facility on Buckley’s Rd, and can be self-
loaded at any time during opening hours or can be loadedby staff on Saturdays between 8am and 11am.
Residents can deposit uncontaminated green waste forfree at the Waste Management Facility during openinghours.
Membership call forEconomics committeeNominations are being sought from thecommunity for four positions on the Shire ofBroome’s Economic Development AdvisoryCommittee (EDAC).Broome Shire President, Harold Tracey, says the EDACplays an important role in advising Council and theShire on economic development in Broome.Expressions of interest are sought for vacancies in thefollowing industry sectors:• 1 x Resource Industry• 1 x Pastoral/Agriculture Industry• 1 x Business/Industry Organisation

Send the kids to BRACfor school holiday funThe BRAC School Holiday Program is underwayand will run until 25 January with half andfull-day options.
Kids can take part in healthy, supervised activitiessuch as inflatable water fun, arts and crafts, cooking,water fights, tabloid water sports, BRAC movie daysand science.
The program is open to kids aged 6-12 yearswith enrolment information, including programand enrolment forms available from the Shirewebsite, BRAC or by [email protected].
School holiday activities run at BRAC until 25 January.
