Broome Shire President, Harold Tracey, says Shire staff have worked tirelessly in difficult conditions to clean up the town and ensure the community’s safety, and their efforts are greatly appreciated. A summary of the damage and clean-up work around the Shire includes: • Cape Leveque Rd suffered major scouring and water damage on the unsealed section, while the sealed section also suffered major damage to road edges. The Shire has had two graders and two loaders working on Cape Leveque Rd which allowed it to be re-opened last week to 4WDs under 4 tonnes. However, there are a considerable number of warning signs posted to advise of hazards and drivers are requested to take extreme caution. • The Shire has also issued permits to allow fuel and food trucks to use the road to take essential supplies to communities on the Dampier Peninsula and has worked with the drivers to ensure they have access. • Around the Broome town site the clean-up has prioritised clearing and cleaning roads, footpaths and public spaces such as parks of fallen trees, hanging branches, sand and mud, and other safety hazards. • The Town Beach precinct was re-opened last Friday after considerable hard work to remove fallen trees and hanging branches, remove tree stumps and fill in holes, and repair or remove damaged signage, shade sails, fencing and garden edging. • Additional damage around town includes scouring of road edges in some areas that will require repair, fallen signage, and fallen goal posts at BRAC. “It’s expected that work to clean up the town site could last for another couple of weeks,” Cr Tracey says. Residents are requested to take responsibility for clearing their own yards and verges and depositing green waste at the Waste Management Facility as there will not be capacity for a kerbside green waste collection. The Shire of Broome has been liaising with its insurers and also expects to make application for WA Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements funding to ensure that the cost of the clean-up borne by the Shire of Broome and its ratepayers is minimised.” Town Beach re-opened last Friday following considerable hard work. Planning underway for Australia Day Planning is underway to celebrate Australia Day 2018 with a bigger, better community breakfast and family fun day at Town Beach. The event on Friday 26 January from 8am to 1pm includes breakfast, live music, children’s games and activities, an Australian Citizenship Ceremony and presentation of the Community Citizen of the Year Awards. Broome’s hardworking Lions, Lioness and Rotary Clubs, Roebuck Lodge and Men’s Shed will again host the event and cook breakfast from 8am to 10am, and from 10am to 1pm food vans will sell cool drinks, ice creams and more. The Shire of Broome has come on board to provide support and entertainment including a line-up of local musicians featuring Scott McDougall, Maddi Davies and Friends, Paul Boon and George Bishop, and Dan Guidera; children’s bouncy castle, water slide and battle balls; and the traditional favourite thong- throwing competition. There will be no fireworks event this year after the decision was made following the last-minute cancellation of the 2017 event due to bad weather. Make the most of free garden mulch With record amounts of green waste being deposited in the wake of TC Hilda, residents are being encouraged to make the most of free mulch.
