Every style maven has her muse and while I find inspiration in the masses, I was ultimately impressed upon by my mother. Born in the 50’s south and then moving out west her fashion choices were ultimately shaped by her surroundings. She sewed her own outfits, made choices that were bold and daring, and dabbled in modeling. I always remember my mother being the epitome of femininity. She worked the friendly skies when uniforms consisted of Hot Pants, Go Go Boots, and big hair. She taught me how to use my softness as a weapon of mass destruction, and that “do it yourself” it always better than someone else doing it for you. She encouraged me to embrace the different and define what fashion was for me and never what I was told it should be. She let me make my own mistakes and choices and didn’t play dress up baby with me too often. For this I am eternally grateful as her fierceness had created the legacy I share with you!

There are a few things I can never remember my mother without. Red Lipstick. She loves Mac Red. I am just now getting to the point where I can wear it and not feel like I’m playing dress up. I still get excited like I did as a kid to have lips outlines on my cheek from mom. Lipstick to me is like the ultimate crown of what it mean to be a W-O-M-A-N!

My mom always wore Perfume I can remember her coming home from work and smelling the Red by Giorgio Beverly Hills and hoping some of it would rub off on me and she always always owned a good string of pearls! Jewelry is something my mother told me I would grow into and encouraged me to have. She has some beautiful pieces. A classic piece of jewelry goes a long way and leaves that love to be passed on from mother to daughter.

1. Being feminine doesn’t mean being weak!

2. A tube of lipstick and prayer will get you far in life.

3. Always have a signature scent. You want to be remembered.

4. Airports and Bad Outfits are a No Go!

5. Steam your face at least once a week.

6. Think of Jewelry as an investment and find a husband who doesn’t mind investing.

7. Do It Yourself. If you see it and you can do it better. Why not?

8. Never photograph in your eyeglasses.

9. Always own a slip and a girdle (passed on from granny)

10. Embrace where you came from so you can appreciate where you’re headed!
