SharonUttley-SharonwasbornandraisedintheMidwestandcametoRacineaftergraduatingfromtheUniversityofMinnesotaDuluthin1962withadegreeinNursery,Kindergarten,andPrimaryEducation.SharonstartedhercareerteachingkindergartenatGoodlandElementaryandretiredfromWinslowElementary43yearslater.Whensheretiredin2005,shereceivedagiftmembershiptoALLandhassinceenjoyedbeingamemberoftheorganizationanditsmanyactivities.

THEPROFESSORANDTHEPOLISHSTUDENTSDr.AnneGurnackwasinstrumentalinbringingPolishstudentstoUW-Parkside.DominikBąkowskiandSzymonOwczarekhavebeenhereforfouryearsandgraduateinMay.MonikaGolikowskaspentthespringsemesteratUWP.Readsomehighlightsfrom(separate)recentinterviewswithDominikandDr.Gurnack:DOMINIKBĄKOWSKIINTERESTEDINU.S.EvenwhenIwasveryyoung,frommiddleschoolorevenearlier,IalwayswantedtogototheUnitedStates.Maybeitwasmediainfluence,liketheUSmoviesIwatched.IwantedtoexperiencetheU.S.andnotjustforashorttrip;IknewIwantedtheexperienceofalong-timestayandcontactwithAmericanpeople. InhighschoolIstartedtalkingaboutitseriouslywithmyparents,andwithmyfriend,SzymonOwczarek.Wewantedtogorightafterhighschool,butthatdidn’tworkout,soweattendedtheUniversityofGdanskforayear.AtthattimeDr.AnnaMazurkiewicz,myAmericanHistoryprofessor,introducedmetoaVisitingProfessorfromtheStates,Professor[Emerita]AnneGurnack,whotoldusaboutopportunitiesforinternationalstudentsandsupportwecouldgetfromtheUniversityofWisconsin-Parkside. ThankstoDr.Gurnack,andtheinformationandcontactssheprovided,wedecidedtocomeheretostudy.Wehadsomedirectconnectionstotheadmissionsstaffandtheyquicklyhelpeduswithalltheformalpapersandourvisas,shorteningtheprocessfromoneyearthatitwouldtypicallytaketoonemonth.AndIwasabletogetascholarship,whichwasvery,verynice.WeappliedtoUWPattheendofJuly,andattheendofAugustwewereflyingtotheUS!
UNIVERSITYSTUDIESAttheUniversityofGdanskIwasintheAmericanStudiesprogram,whichemphasizesAmericanculture,butincludesAmericanandBritishhistory,andlearningthelinguistics,grammar,phoneticsofEnglish. AtParksideI’mstudyingbusinesswithaconcentrationinhumanresourcemanagement,andaminoringlobalmanagementsystems.I’mhappywithmy3.8GPA.IwasworkingveryhardandIalwayscaredaboutgrades,sowhateverIdid,Iputalotofeffortinit,anditpaidoff. LEARNINGENGLISHIstartedlearningEnglishin4thgrade,buttheemphasiswasmostlyongrammar.StudyingEnglishisgettingmorepopularinPolandsinceemployerslookforpeoplewithmorethanonelanguage.MyparentswantedmetolearnEnglish,andIhavebeenveryinterestedinlearningit,evenasateen.IlearnedmostofmyEnglishfrombooks,(ratherthanusingtheInternet).It’smyhobbyandmybookshelvesarefilledwithEnglishbooks.MyAmericanStudiescoursesattheUniversityofGdanskwereinEnglish,butwhenIgothereIwasuncomfortableactuallyspeakingEnglish.AndIhaddifficultyunderstandingafewofthe(foreignnationality)professorsastheyhadevenmoredifficultaccents,soclasseslikefinanceandstatisticswereastruggle.IhadtomakeupforwhatIdidn’tunderstandinclassbygoingthrougheverychapterinthebookseveraltimes.IalsostudiedGermanandFrenchforafewyears,butnowIrecalljustthebasicsbecauseIhaven’tusedthem.THANKSTOALLMEMBERSPattiGrosshasbeenverykindtoforeignstudents,invitingustoher

homeforThanksgivingdinner,andsometimestowatchPackergames.TedAndersonshowedmearoundtheareawhenIfirstarrived.AndFrankKleinhelpedmewithmytaxes.[ActuallyFrankhelped27studentsfrom10countrieswiththeirtaxesthisyear.]AndDr.GurnackwasthekeyinhelpingSzymonandmecometotheUniversity!INTERNSHIPDuringthewinterinterimbreakthisyearIappliedforaninternshipwithaMilwaukeecompanyinthehumanresourcesarea,whichisexactlywhatI’vebeenstudyinghere.It’sperfectexperienceinmyareaofstudy,andgivesmedirectinteractionwithpeople,ratherthanusingnumbers,likeaccounting.AftergraduationmyinternshipwillcontinueunderaprogramthroughtheUSCitizenshipandImmigrationServicescalledOPT:Optional PracticalTraining.ItallowsmetostayintheUSforanadditional12monthstogetpracticalworkexperience.GRADUATIONI’vebeennominatedbyUW-ParksidefacultymembersofBetaGammaSigmatobeinductedintothehonorsociety.Myfamilyiscomingforgraduation,andthenwe’llspendthreeweeksvisitingtheEastandWestcoasts.

Rightafter9/11IwascontactedbyayoungPolishmanwhowasdoinggenealogyworkonmymother’sfamily.EventuallyImethiminGdansk,whichisonthesouthendoftheBalticSea.Wetraveledtomyhomevillage,andhisalso—thesamevillagewherebothofourfamilymembersoriginatedfrom.ThenIjoinedthePolishAmericanHistoricalAssociationandstartedwritingpapersaboutancestryandimmigration,whichledmetomeetProfessorAnnaMazurkiewiczfromtheUniversityofGdansk.ShewroteseveralyearsagosayingthatshehadstudentswhowantedtostudyintheUS,usingacompanythatchargedseveralthousanddollarstohandletheallofthelogistics. InsteadIputthemintouchwithUWP’sAdmissionsOffice.WealsoinvitedDr.MazurkiewicztospeakatUW-MilwaukeewhereIwasaVisitingProfessor,plusshespokeatParksideandmetChancellorFord.TheseeffortswerethestartofParkside’sexchangeprogram. LastwintertherewerehalfadozenstudentswhotraveledtotheUniversityofGdanskwithProfessorHelenRosenberg.Theseexchangestudents[differentfromDominikandSzymon’sprogram]havealectureserieshere,andmorelecturesinGdansk,Kraków,andWarsaw.AgroupfromGdanskwillcometoUWPnextfall.WhenIwasaVisitingProfessorattheUniversityofGdanskteachingAmericanPoliticsandtheStructureofGovernmentImetastudent,MonikaGolikowska,whoisstudyingatParksidethissemester.Monika’shelpingmewithresearchontheKashubefishermeninPoland,tryingtofindoutwhathappenedtothemaftertheircountryjoinedtheEuropeanUnion.[Dr.GurnackhasalsostudiedandpublishedpapersontheKashubeswhoemigratedtoMilwaukeeandlivedonJonesIsland–aninterestingtopicforafuturelecture!]

Atthattimeamammothskeleton,nowattheKenoshaMuseum,hadrecentlymadethenews,sowedecidedonthetopicofarcheology.Anarcheologistfoundsignsofbutcheringonthenewlydiscoveredbones,anddidcarbondating,showingthattheseboneswereolderthanonesfoundinClovis,NewMexico,previouslythehallmarkofhumanhabitationinN.A.
AWOLTODAYCharlotteShortisthechairofthisyear’sWeekofLearningCommittee—agroupofabout15peoplewhomeetmonthlystartinginaboutNovember,andtypicallymoreoftenastheyapproachtheJuneevent.Sheacknowledgedthat,“inmytimeonthecommittee,theALLvolunteershavebeensuperb.Thereisatremendousamountofworkdonebythesededicatedvolunteers.Andthevarietyofexpertiseandbackgroundknowledgewithinourgroupisastounding.Howweendupwithsuchfinespeakersonsuchawidevarietyofinterestsneverfailstoamazeme.”
Whilemanycommitteemembersarelong-timevolunteersforAWOLprograms,thiswasthefirstyearvolunteer,CarlaKnickrehm.Shenotedthat,“thecommitteehasaverygoodprocessinwhatthey’redoing.Plus,”shesaid,“IliketogetinvolvedinALL,soI’llprobablyserveonthecommitteeagainnextyear.”
Macnotedthatonelessonquicklylearnedwasthatitworkedjustfinetoaskcompletestrangers(withtheirimpeccablebackgrounds)tospeaktousforapittance.“Speakersarepaidan
honorariumof$50/hour.Weusuallyinvitethemtojoinusforlunchandpaytheirmileageiftheycomefromquiteadistance.Butmanyspeakersdeclinethehonorariumandspeakforfree.Thebiggertheyare,thenicertheyare,”Macsays,“hasprovedtobesotrue.”
DarleenChiapetta,who’sbeeninvolvedwithAWOLsince2002,said(withabigsmile)thebestthingaboutworkingonAWOLis“theabsolutesurprisewhenthingswork.Thecommitteeiscomingatitfromallangles,andthenitmiraculouslyworksoutbeautifullyandpeoplearehappy—well,forthemostpart,there’salwaysatleastonecomplaint,always.”
WHYISAWOLIMPORTANT?Forher,Charlottesaid,“AWOLoffersanothervenueforlearning—anopportunitytolookandlearnaboutatopicindepth.Thankstothetechnicalexpertiseofseveralonourteam,wehadtheopportunitytoholdateleconferencewithapresenterinDubai.Ireallyenjoyedtheoneoncurrenttrendsinmedicineandlastyear'sMiddleEast.”
