Dear Friends,

Welcome to a new year of faith formation opportunities at Transfiguration! In this booklet you will find an overview of our many programs for children, teens, families, and adults. As you may know, last year was a time of transition for our staff. We took time to listen to the desires of the community and prayed over where we are called to grow next. We are happy to bring forth this year several NEW initiatives that have grown out of our listening and prayer.

We have restructured the old classroom model for children’s reli-gious education into a new family-based program that we hope will be more meaningful and relevant for our families. Instead of dropping children off for an hour a week, families will now gather once a month for a shared meal, followed by a topic presentation and learning activi-ties for each family member at their age level. There will also be weekly at-home lessons and an online component to track progress. This new program is called Bridges of Faith. See pages 6 & 7 for more details.

We are also launching a new ministry called Discovering Christ. If you have been wondering about the purpose of your life and who Jesus is for you, I invite you to come and ask your questions in this friendly and supportive community setting. Discovering Christ is a seven-week series beginning in January. Each session includes a free meal, a video presentation, and small group table discussions. All are welcome, no matter where you are in your faith journey or stage of life.

There are many other highlights for adults this year including a book study on the Ignatian Wisdom of Aging; Dr. Joe Kelly’s fall series on the Protestant Reformation and spring series on the Gospel of Mark as well as a women’s retreat facilitated by Ann Harnish. We also welcome back Dr. Damian Zynda for a day of awareness focused on St. Ignatius and Living the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

I hope you find something to nourish your relationship with God here at Transfiguration. May the year ahead offer you many opportunities to grow in your faith and experience how good it is for us to be here!

Exploring the Gospel of Mark Facilitator: Dr. Joe Kelly

Sundays, March 4, 11, 18, 25 Parish Life Center—Double Room; 10:00 AM—11:00 AM

In Year B of our Lectionary cycle, we again focus our attention

on the Gospel of Mark. Since Mark gives us our first portrait

of Jesus, it allows us to glimpse the earliest understanding of

who Jesus was and what his life meant to the early Christians.

Mark creates a wonderfully literary test in which he sees

Jesus as the Suffering Servant. But he also sees a need to

introduce the so-called Messianic Secret. It was also Mark’s

Gospel that formed the basis for the Gospels of Matthew and

Luke as they developed additional portraits of Jesus. You are

invited to take this opportunity to deepen your understanding

of the Liturgy of the Word.

Sacramental Preparation

Sacramental preparation is separate from parish formation programs and catholic schools. Enrollment in formation programs or catholic schools does not enroll a child in sacramental preparation. It is required by the diocese that children participate in a formation program for a minimum of one year prior to sacramental preparation. Transfiguration encourages participating in a formation program for two years prior to the year you enroll in Sacramental Preparation.

Registration Forms for each program are handed out at scheduled INFORMATION MEETINGS.

Scheduled INFORMATION MEETINGS as follows:

First Reconciliation & First Communion Sunday, September 17, 2017 at 10:15am Education Center—Upper Level Parents only need to attend for candidates entering the 2nd grade or higher in the Fall of 2017.

Confirmation Preparation for 2020 Celebration Sunday, June 3, 2018 at 10:15am Education Center—Upper Level Parents & Candidates entering the 8th grade or higher in the Fall of 2018 need to attend.

Important Note: Children who attend public school and are in Kindergarten through High School should be enrolled in one of our formation programs in support of their sacramental preparation and faith development.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLW)

At the 9:00 & 11:30 Mass, we provide children ages 4—7 the opportunity to hear and learn about the readings for Mass at an age appropriate level. This engaging time is not a substitute for the Bridges of Faith program offered by Transfiguration. CLW offers an alternative to the standard Liturgy of the Word. No Materials Fee.

Commemorating the Protestant Reformation: Catholics and Lutherans Dialogue

Facilitator: Dr. Joe Kelly Tuesdays, October 3, 10, 17, 24

Parish Life Center—Double Room; 7:00 PM—8:30 PM

2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, an event that both Catholics and Lutherans recognize as important to commemorate. In this series of lectures, we will examine this tumultuous period of history in Christianity: Was the Church in need of reform? Were there reformers before Luther? What cultural and economic factors influenced this period? What did Luther teach? How did Catholics respond? Come and deepen your understanding of this period of Church history and how it af-fects us as Catholics today.

Lessons from St. Ignatius for Living the Liturgy of the Eucharist

Facilitator: Dr. Damian Zynda Saturday, January 13, 2018

Parish Life Center—Double Room; 9:00 AM— 4:00 PM

Flowing from St. Ignatius’ profound devotion to the Eucharist, Eucharist is at the heart of Ignatian Spirituality. Our time will be devoted to reflecting on Ignatius’ life through the lens of four movements within the Liturgy of the Eucharist that form us to be Eucharist for the world today. Equal time will be given to presentation, personal appropriation through silent prayer, and conversation. Please bring a journal for notes and entries. All are welcome.

Fee*: $25 (lunch provided)—Registration is required; Contact: [email protected] or 585-248-2467
