“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”

And Mary said,“My soul magnifies the Lord,

and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;for he who is mighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his name.And his mercy is for those who fear him

from generation to generation.

He has shown strength with his arm;he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their

hearts;he has brought down the mighty from their thrones

and exalted those of humble estate;he has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.He has helped his servant Israel,

in remembrance of his mercy,as he spoke to our fathers,to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”

And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel”

(which means, God with us).

When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife,

And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest,and on earth peace among those with whom he is

pleased!”

When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

Woe to you who desire the day of the LORD!Why would you have the day of the LORD?It is darkness, and not light,

as if a man fled from a lion,and a bear met him,

or went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall,

and a serpent bit him.Is not the day of the LORD darkness, and not light,

and gloom with no brightness in it?

“I hate, I despise your feasts,and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain

offerings,I will not accept them;and the peace offerings of your fattened animals,I will not look upon them.Take away from me the noise of your songs;to the melody of your harps I will not listen.But let justice roll down like waters,and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
