THE HOLY GOSPEL A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Glory to Christ our Saviour. At that time John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, “We have Abraham as our ancestor”; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.’ And the crowds asked him, ‘What then should we do?’ In reply he said to them, ‘Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.’ Even tax-collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, ‘Teacher, what should we do?’ He said to them, ‘Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you.’ Soldiers also asked him, ‘And we, what should we do?’ He said to them, ‘Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.’ As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah,* John answered all of them by saying, ‘I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

The third Sunday of Advent, is often called Gaudete Sunday. The Latin word Gaudete, means Rejoice and is the first word of the old introit at Mass.

It is a term that is prominent in the Epistle for today as Paul the Apostle bids the Philippians to

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.

Accompanying the notion of rejoicing is the element of joy rings in the air as we hear the music and experience the other sounds and sights that prepare us for the Christmas Season.

Let us remember that Christmas is not simply a day; but a season. Furthermore let us bear in mind that this is a cycle in which we call to mind the incarnation that spans as it were three seasons, Advent, Christmas and Epiphany.

It is so easy for us to disconnect these theologically powerful and spiritually enriching themes that link us to the life of Jesus Christ.

Advent has always been important to the Christian Church.

The late Louis Duchesne a historian of Christian liturgy in his work Histoire ancienne de l'Église, (translated as Early History of the Christian

Church) noted that at the Council of Sargossa (Spain 380) it was mentioned that no one was allowed to be absent from church from December 17 though the day of the Epiphany.

Epiphany of course predates the season of Christmas and so Advent was a time to prepare for baptism at Epiphany. It was later shortened to be a time of preparation for Christmas.

The sentiment of not absenting oneself is perhaps difficult to apply in our day and age as persons capitalise on the Sunday shopping experience of this time of year.

As we prepare let us give some thought to those for whom the coming season maybe a challenge, such as those who have lost loved ones, especially those whose loved ones have died suddenly and violently. For such persons the notion of joy could be difficult.

May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing, so that we may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13)

It's that time of the year when we eagerly look forward to the big family Christmas luncheon! Last week we considered the benefits of sorrel but what about adding pomegranate juice to this year's menu. In Barbados, these fruit trees can be still seen growing at the side of the road, in many cases loaded with fruits.
