~ Father John
Dear Friends, Our readings for this 3rd Sunday of Advent continue the preparation theme we’ve been hearing in the first two weeks of the season. Now, though, our focus shifts a bit to the joy that awaits us in the kingdom of God. Today, as a matter-of-fact, is Gaudete Sunday. The name comes from the Latin version of the first sentence of our second reading from St. Paul, where he begins to conclude his first letter to the church in Thessalonica, a passage that illustrates what is at the heart of Christian joy. It is more than simply being cheerful. It is available to us and becomes visible in us when we take Paul’s words to heart: “Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks. . . do not quench the Spirit. . . retain what is good [and] refrain from every kind of evil” (1 Thess. 5:17-22). Today is the Sunday of Joy and so we light the rose candle on our Advent wreath.
In the gospel we hear the words of John the Baptist, a man who knew joy
because he knew who he was and who he was not: “I am not the Christ,” he says. “I am not Elijah. I am not the prophet. I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord.’” This is a man who is not about to promote himself when he is presented with an opportunity to do so. Like Mary, whose role in salvation history we will hear about next Sunday, John had an extraordinary role to play in God’s plan of salvation. He was the best friend of the bridegroom, a voice announcing Jesus’ coming, a man who came to testify to the light, but who himself was not the light.
Advent, with its emphasis on preparing for the coming of Christ, calls us to
know just who we are, too, and to rejoice in our identity. We are children of the Light, sons and daughters of God who sent His Son into the world that we might have life; who sent His Son to make us “perfectly holy,” as Paul also writes in our second reading. As these days of preparation draw us closer to the celebration of the Jesus’ birth, take some quiet time to reflect upon your understanding of yourself. Who are you in relation to God? How does your relationship with God influence your daily living? Does it make you a joyful person? Does the joy of knowing that Christ came for you influence your mission in the world as his disciple? Do others see your joy when they see you? Peace and blessings,
Father John

Third Sunday of Advent Jesus the Divine Word Catholic Church
ADVENT CONFESSION/RECONCILIATION SERVICE TONIGHT
Preparing for Christmas includes preparing our hearts,
our lives, for the King of Peace, Jesus Christ, the Savior of the World. No matter our sins, God wants to free us
from them through the gift of his mercy and forgiveness. You are invited to celebrate the
joy of God’s mercy and forgiveness in the Sacrament of Confession/Reconciliation
tonight, December 17th, beginning at 6:30 pm.
Six priests will be available to celebrate the sacrament.
CAN YOU HELP DECORATE OUR HOME?
Volunteers needed to help with
decorating for Christmas. We will be decorating the church after the noon Mass today Sunday, December 17th. We are especially in need of helpers to bring up boxes from the basement,
assemble the Christmas trees and Nativity, and hang the wreaths in the Narthex.
We will also require less strenuous help with decorating the church, the Narthex, and the lobby outside of Doran Hall.
The more help we have the faster the work will get done! Hope to see you this afternoon.

With the start of Advent we begin praying with our parish’s Vocation Cross.
Devotion to the Vocation Cross involves a designated parish household receiving the cross at the conclusion of Mass and
taking the cross home for one week, praying for a few minutes every day for the gift of vocations to the priesthood and
consecrated life from our parish.
Please pray for Vocations this week with the Snearly family.
CHRISTMAS FLOWERS
There is a special envelope in your December offering packet for Christmas Flowers.
Please help make our church beautiful this Christmas by your donation.
Loose envelopes are also available in the
