So top

So top operation The fully automatic fabric so top can be opened and closed at vehicle speeds of up to 60 km/h. The so top takes approx. 17 seconds to open and is operated via the electronic key or the so top switch in the centre console. Releasing the switch stops the opening or closing procedure, which is monitored via 12 proximity limit switches. During the opening procedure, the fabric so top folds into a part of the boot. The so top is separated from the rest of the luggage compartment space by means of a retractable cover which encloses the so top. As a result this prevents the so top from getting dirty. This boot separator automatically extends when opening the so top. If the boot is loaded with objects which are positioned near the boot separator then the so top does not operate. With the so top closed, the boot separator can be retracted via the button in the boot lid interior trim to create a larger boot volume. > 55-40026

Comprehensive aerodynamic and aeroacoustic detailed work has been carried out with a particular focus on the so top when closed and open-top motoring. This enables a low level of wind resistance and meets the aeroacoustic require-ments both when driving with the so top closed as well as with it open. Innovative optional extras such as the AIRCAP system contribute to the noticeable stabilisation of the air fl ow in the interior.

Aeroacoustic focal points: • Design and construction of the so top, with lots of indi-

vidual layers • Material and shape of seals, e. g. on the doors

Features of the fabric top: • Fully automatic operation via electronic key or the switch

in the centre console at vehicle speeds of up to 60 km/h • Opening procedure takes only approx. 17 seconds • When open, the so top is stowed in a so top compart-

ment which folds out automatically in the boot, and as a result the boot capacity is reduced

• Any possible obstacles in the boot are detected and the folding out of the so top compartment is stopped

• Design as an “acoustic so top” as standard ensures the lowest noise level in this segment

• Excellent thermal insulation • Fully automatic car wash-proof, dirt-repellentand weather-

resistant • Available so top colours: black, dark blue, beige and

dark red • Roof liner in the colours porcelain, crystal grey and black >56-441509

designo diamond white bright (799), designo Exclusive nappa leather porcelain/deep-sea blue (975), AIRCAP (288), AIRSCARF (403)

AIRSCARF This neck-level heating makes open-top driving a pleasure even at low temperatures. Through air outlets in the head restraints, pleasantly warm air is wrapped around the necks of the driver and front passenger like an invisible scarf. The desired temperature can be set in three stages. > 55-40044

AIRCAP When the so top is down, AIRCAP reduces turbulence in the interior, for passengers in the rear as well. When the AIRCAP switch is pressed, a wind louvre on the windscreen pops up and the draught-stop between rear head restraints is extended upwards. > 55-40818

Boot separatorIt is not possible to open the so top when the retractable cover of the boot separator for separating the so top in the boot cannot be extended, e. g. when there are objects located in this area of the boot. The message “Close boot separator” appears in the media display. In this case the appropriate part of the boot must be cleared. The boot separator can then start to be extended using a button on the inside of the boot lid, thus ensuring that the so top can open properly.

Warmth Comfort package On cold days, heating of the seats, armrests and steering wheel very rapidly ensures cosy warmth from all surfaces with which the driver and passengers come into contact. The passengers can choose between 3 heating levels. > 55-35733

Safety and assistant systems

Exemplary safety – with Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive The S-Class Cabriolet is a trendsetter when it comes to the integral safety concept. Intelligently networked driving assistance and safety systems are able to assist the driver eff ectively in critical situations and enhance the safety of the occupants as well as other road users. The vehicle’s body structure combines high rigidity with low weight. Effi cient restraint systems also contribute to providing the vehicle occupants with optimum protection . Numerous post-accident vehicle and system measures are aimed at mitigating the consequences and facilitating any rescue work .

Highlights of the safety concept: • Driving Assistance package Plus (optional): These complementary safety and assistance systems helps to relieve driver

strain, reduce the risk of accidents and improve protection for both the occupants and other road users: • DISTRONIC PLUS (233) with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot assists the driver with keeping a safe distance from the

vehicle in front and also with staying in lane • BAS PLUS (268) with Cross-Traffi c Assist can reduce the risk of rear-end collisions and accidents at junctions and assist

the driver with additional brake pressure during emergency braking • PRE-SAFE® Brake (300) warns the driver if the danger of a collision with another vehicle or a pedestrian is detected,

and if there is no reaction reduces the vehicle speed autonomously – right up to full emergency braking • Active Lane Keeping Assist (238) can warn a driver who is unintentionally dri ing out of lane and help to return the

vehicle to its lane by one-sided braking intervention • Active Blind Spot Assist (237) can warn the driver of vehicles in the blind spot during a lane change, and help to avoid

a collision with one-sided braking intervention • PRE-SAFE® PLUS (271) extends the functions of the PRE-SAFE® system with preventive measures in an impending rear-

end collision, these include the activation of the hazard warning lamps, reversible belt tensioning or full application of the brakes on the stationary vehicle

• ATTENTION ASSIST (538#) can warn the driver when typical signs of inattentiveness or drowsiness are detected, thereby enhancing driving safety

• Traffi c Sign Assist (513) is able to recognise speed limits, no-entry and no-overtaking zones and the signs marking the ends of such zones and to indicate these restrictions to the driver, a visual and audible warning is output when the driver ignores no-entry signs

• COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS (258) combines radar-based proximity warning, braking support through Adaptive Brake Assist and partial autonomous braking to reduce the risk of rear-end collisions (standard in certain countries)

• Night View Assist Plus (610) (optional) enables the driver to detect pedestrians or larger animals sooner in the dark • Head-up display (463) (optional) enables key driver information to be retained in view without the driver having to take

their eyes off the road • Active Parking Assist (235) with PARKTRONIC and reversing camera provides automatic assistance with entering and

leaving parallel and end-on parking spaces with active steering and brake intervention, parking on slight bends is also possible

• 360° degree camera (501) (optional) assists the driver when parking and manoeuvring in tight spaces by monitoring all four sides of the vehicle and generating a 360-degree view using four cameras

−) ( Mainly designed as a two-seater, rear seats only suitable for emergency use

−) ( No all-LED headlamps −) ( Infotainment system outdated, e. g. no WiFi,

small 6.5-inch LCD display (S-Class: 12-inch Media Display)

Weaknesses:

−) ( As a result of its high weight of 2470 kg (S-Class Cabriolet: 2115 kg) the Bentley tends to suff er from signifi cant understeer in tighter corners

−) ( There is a lack of basic driving assistance sys-tems, such as a blind spot warning system or emergency braking assistant

−) ( No all-LED headlamps available −) ( Bentley claims to serve the luxury class, but the

GTC V8 is based on the VW Phaeton −) ( Outdated navigation graphics on 8-inch display

Sales arguments for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet The new S-Class Cabriolet extends the S-Class family: the elegant Cabriolet is based on the successful Coupé version of the S-Class and impresses with an expressive appearance whether driving with the top open or closed. Fine materials and details add an exciting touch to the luxurious interior, which off ers exclusive comfort and room for four people. Intelligently networked assistance and communication systems guarantee entertainment at the highest level and make the vehicle one of the safest cabriolets in its class.

Further important arguments in favour of the S-Class Cabriolet: • The 9G-TRONIC (421) transmission with DIRECT SELECT lever and DIRECT SELECT steering wheel gearshi paddles repre-

sents a new benchmark for effi ciency, comfort and dynamism. The transmission allows even faster gear changes and gen-tler shi ing between gears, while it also plays its part in reducing fuel consumption.

• In combination with infi nitely variable damper control, the AIRMATIC air suspension system ensures a very high standard of both ride comfort and handling. The damping at each wheel is adapted to the current driving situation, and can be set for more comfortable or sporty characteristics as required.

• The AIRCAP system (288), which reduces draughts inside the car when driving with the roof down – for the passengers in the rear too – also helps to ensure a very pleasant level of motoring comfort. If necessary, the so top on the S-Class Cabriolet can be closed automatically at speeds of up to 60 km/h.

• Driving with the roof down continues to be a real pleasure even in cooler weather: The three-stage AIRSCARF neck-level heating (403) blows warm air into the area around the neck whenever desired, while with the Warmth Comfort package (P68) the front seats, armrests and steering wheel can be quickly heated to a pleasant temperature.

• An array of assistance and safety systems , including DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot (233), BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffi c Assist (268), COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS (258) and PRE-SAFE® PLUS (271), off er the highest standard of safety in the competitive fi eld.

• When driving in the dark, the dynamic LED High Performance headlamps with LED Intelligent Light System (P35) ensure an optimum view of the road ahead – and can be specifi ed with 47 Swarovski crystals each (5U5) as an extra-special highlight. Night View Assist Plus with pedestrian detection (610) helps the driver to spot both pedestrians and animals faster too.

• The AMG Line (950) gives added impact to the sporty look with a series of clear visual distinguishing features, including AMG light-alloy wheels, perforated brake discs and classy high-gloss black poplar wood trim. The AMG Line Plus (956), including AMG sports steering wheel, has an even more exclusive air to it.

• Highly sophisticated equipment options, such as the Burmester® high-end surround sound system (811), the Seat Comfort package (432) with ENERGIZING massage function or the AIR-BALANCE package (P21) including ionisation, enhanced air fi ltering and fragrancing, all serve to heighten the luxury experience.
