Info-HealthBY DR. BOB YOUNG

Doctors and drivers. A recentarticle of mine concerning thephysician's role in determining thefitness of older people to drive hasreminded me of other areas wherethe doctor is asked to assess apersons' suitability for this activity.

Younger men and women whodrive specialized equipment arerequired to have a physical at fairlyfrequent intervals. Bus drivers, heavy equipment operators, andindividuals in charge of vehicleswith air brakes are among thoseaffected. The reasoning is, ofcourse, that the truck or bus, because of its size and weight, orbecause passengers are carried, should be operated by a healthydriver.

The guidelines for the physicianare more stringent in these casesthan they are for automobile driv-ers. The road test is also moreexacting for the professional driv-er. Decisions must be carefullymade when a man's or woman'slivelihood is at stake.

Patients recovering from illnes-ses often ask their physician whenthey can start driving again. Manyfactors may influence the doctor inproviding his professional opinion. At times local driving is allowedbefore permission is given to take atrip.

If a patient has been told by adoctor that he must not drive (forreasons of ill health), and thedoctor becomes aware that thepatient continues to drive, the lawrequires that the doctor inform theMotor Vehicle Branch. They, inturn, usually send the patient aform requesting a physical exami-nation be done.

Special consideration has to begiven to people who are handicapp-ed. Those with epilepsy, amputa-tions, vision problems, or psychia-tric illness require special atten-tion. The assessing physician ishelped by guidelines provided bythe Motor Vehicle Branch, butthese are not sufficient to coverevery case and often commonsense is the key to the decision.

The final, and probably mostfrequent contact between doctorand driver occurs in the emergencydepartment of the local hospital. Inspite of 'preventive maintenance'of drivers, care of accident victimscontinues to be all too frequentlyrequired.

The timely topic of energy useand conservation was the theme ofinterest for classes this past weekas an information team visited theschool. During hour-long sessionsthe team explained how the differ-ent forms of energy are created andused; and, by means of film, howthey are wasted and through whatmethods energy can be conserved.All-in-all a highly interesting andprofessional presentation. Specialthanks should go to the conserva-tion team and particularly to Dor-othy Kyle for arranging the visit.

Otherwise the flavour of theschool's extra-curricular programis highly athletic. This past week-end the first and hopefully annualSalt Spring-Fernwood Boys' Invita-tional Volleyball Tournament washeld at the high school, with teamsfrom Salt Spring, Fernwood, Pen-dcr and Mt. Brenton and AlexAitken from Vancouver Island par-ticipating.

In a highly competitive roundrobin the Alex Aitken side emergedas the overall champion.

The high level of skill at thisage never ceases to amaze - someof the rallies were nothing short ofsensational.

Congratulations should go toMr. Taylor for another job welldone.GIRLS STAGE CLIFF HANGER

Meanwhile the girl's team trav-elled to Mt. Brenton for whatturned out to be one of the mostenjoyable trips of the year - notonly was the host school friendlyand enthusiastic - but also somefine volleyball was displayed. Ifthere is one trademark of thisyear's team, it's their ability totake a 14-1 lead in a game and thenhave the game go into overtime.Great for the spectators, but badfor the old coach's nerves!

This coming weekend BoundaryBay Elementary from Delta visitsin the first half of an athletic-cul-tural exchange. Friday night in theActivity Centre, the two schools(boys and girls) will battle atpinguard, and Saturday in the highschool gym the game is volleyball.

It goes without saying that

students are looking forward tothis. Plans are to return, the visit toBoundary Bay sometime in March.PINGUARD STILL RULES

Down in the gym pinguard stillrules supreme - certainly one of themore popular sports this year.Stallions lead the way with 73points, followed by Colts, Mus-tangs and Broncos. In overallstandings Stallions also lead with161 points, with Colts (199), Mus-tangs (150) and Broncos (150) rightbehind. Next week, in our specialevents category, we will be holdinga circuit.

Around the school things keepright on moving - swimming andskating programs continue - butwith the end in sight.

Students are also beginning toprepare for the speaking contests

to be held early next month. Threecategories will be judged - indivi-dual speaking, individual reading, and choral recitation. More on thisin the next few weeks.

Of a more immediate nature, the film "The Apple DumplingGang" will be shown in the gymthis week - certainly an excellentway to stay entertained on a cold, miserable January lunch hour.

Finally, a reminder to all par-ents - on snowy days when there isa threat of bus cancellation, pleasetune in to radio stations CKDA orCFAX in Victoria for news. Aninformation bulletin in this regardwill be forthcoming with the namesof contact persons who will have anupdated account of the bus situa-tion.

Phoenix Orchards needsenterprising islanders

BY LILLIAN HORSDAL

Most Salt Spring residents, especially those with apples, haveheard of Phoenix Orchards. Indeedyou may have enjoyed the deli-cious, preservative-free juice.

This year, our first year ofoperation, we picked and pressedsix tons of apples.

Our juice, according to ourcustomers who keep coming backfor more, is the best tasting applejuice as well as the longest pre-served with no artificial ingredientsadded. This is done by PhoenixOrchards right here on our islandtoo.

Now we have another yearahead of us, another season ofpicking and pressing and we wouldlike to know how other islandersfeel about our project.

Are there enough enterprisingislanders to want this island indus-try to grow and prosper forislanders and by islanders?

On February 5 we are calling ameeting of all interested indivi-duals: come and join in on the

Volunteers tohelp with

tax returnsSome people hate the thought

of having to do their own incometax return. But in communitiesacross Canada there are others whovolunteer to do five, 10, 20 or morereturns. These are the people whoparticipate in Revenue CanadaTaxation's Volunteer Tax Program, and they are trained by the localpublic relations officer.

These volunteers are willing tohelp senior citizens with limitedincome, handicapped and low in-come people who need help withthe annual income tax returns.

This year there is also the newchild tax credit program to consi-der. This program could mean upto $200 for each eligible child, depending on the family income. The monies will not be sentautomatically. They must beapplied for by completing a sche-dule 10 and a 1978 income taxreturn, and they may only beclaimed by the person entitled tothe December family allowance. Inmany cases this will mean womenwho have not filed for years, or whomay have never before completedan income tax return will now haveto file in order to receive the childtax credit.

The volunteer tax counsellor forthe Gulf Islands is Jim Verner ofPort Washington, and his phonenumber is 629-6683. He will bepleased to hear from anyone in theislands who requires assistance

Dance auditions for Jesus ChristSuperstar were held in the hall of

St. George's Church, while those out for director David Fitchewauditioning for singing parts tried upstairs.

Musical cast almost completeBut male singers needed

The auditions are over and thecasting is almost complete - butthat means more work rather thanless for the producer and directorof Jesus Christ Superstar.

Casting for the popular music-al, slated for performances in theActivity Centre at Ganges April7-8, was completed during theweekend after approximately 50would-be performers and back-stage helpers turned up for audi-tions on Monday and Friday eve-nings last week.

The idea for production of theworld-famous musical originatedwith Rev. Peter McCalman, whosome years ago produced a mimeversion in the round with a youngcast out of Calgary. McCalman, who takes up the reins as producerof the Ganges version of the show, approached David Fitchew with theidea and the pair decided toattempt to stage the show.

Fitchew, who is acting asdirector in the affair, was busylistening to hopeful singers andwatching energetic dancers Fridaynight as the final audition helpednarrow down the prospects for theproduction. There are 11 majorparts to be filled in the show, alongwith a chorus and a dance group.

On Monday Fitchew announcedthat Liduin Currel will play the partof Mary Magdalene, with AmyMoore in the role of the Maid bythe Fire. Eric Booth has beenchosen to play Jesus, Ron Mogerwill be Judas and Reid Collins willfill the role of Herod. SimonZealotes will be played by FranzBeyk.LOOKING FOR SINGERS

A lack of male singers hasprevented the final assignment ofother male roles, and Fitchew andhis assistants are looking hard forsingers to fill them.

Selected to perform with thedancing group were Arlene Dash-wood, Caroline Andress, AnnieShuttleworth, Lois Phillips, JaneRooke, Robin Archibald, DawnLuker, Lisa Fennell and AmyNewman.

Fitchew says all sectors of thecommunity have responded to thecall for singers and dancers, andthe general reaction to the mam-moth job has been "good".

"It's a big challenge," says thedirector. "And it's going to take alot of work."

That noise you heard lastMonday evening at about 11 pm,was the fire siren. The fire depart-ment was called to the home of Donand Shirley Piper, where a fire ofunknown cause, having started inthe kitchen, completely destroyedthe two storey log house. Don andthe two children, Tammy and K.J.,escaped unharmed. Shirley wasaway visiting the mainland at thetime.

We sympathize greatly withthis family, who have lost a homeinto which went much tender andloving care. Used at first as asummer house it had only this yearbecome their permanent home. Itwill take a while for them to recoverfrom the shock, the sense of loss, and to make new plans.

On January 27 there will be abottle and battery drive, organizedby the parents of Saturna IslandSchool students. The proceeds willgo toward a fund to help studentsto go to Victoria on Wednesdayafternoons for instruction and ex-perience in swimming and skating.

An accident involving thechurch furnace caused cancellationof the service on January 21, andalso the congregational meeting

which was to follow. The accidentcaused much damage to the inter-ior of the church, due to smoke andsoot.

This month's church servicewill be held in St. Christopher's onSunday. Jan. 31, at 2 p.m.Afterwards a meeting of the cong-regation will be held in theCommunity Hall. Please come; weneed you.

Several Saturna friends havevisited Jcannie Morgan at theGorge Rehabilitation Hospital, andreport that she is improving in allways. Special thanks to EvelynSaunders. Stella Courts, and AnnBavis who have substituted for herduring her absence.

"If winter comes, can spring befar behind?"

Would Saturna residents seeingany signs of the happy event of theawakening year please be kindenough to notify your correspon-dent. Phone 539-2189.

Sorry this column is so full ofgloom and doom this time. One stillhopes for signs of spring orsomething like that but, so far noluck. Please examine the south sideof the house carefully. There mustbe something soon!

No vote foralternates on

committeesCapital Region Board chairman

Murray Glazier has announced thatalternate directors will no longer bepermitted to vote at committeemeetings. They will be allowed toattend and speak at those meet-ings, but only as observers.

The announcement was madelast week by the board chairman, who also said that alternates willstill be permitted A vote at boardmeetings.

A number of board directorshave been critical of the change, which has been described by someas "bloody stupid".

An electoral area could be leftwithout any effective representa-tion, said Colwood director HowardDrummond.

"The idea of having alternatesis to ensure that communities willbe represented at all times," hesaid.

Sooke director Charles Perkinsdisagrees with the system ofalternate directors but he felt thatwhile "the Municipal Act allowsalternates, they should take overthe director's duties as necess-iry."

Directors are appointed tocommittees for their individualtalents. Glazier said last week, andthe alternates might not have thosesame talents.

He also said that they attendfew meetings and rarely under-stand the business of the regionalboard and therefore should not beallowed to vote on critical matters.
