The global medical tourism market was valued at USD 15.43 billion in 2017, and is expected to register a CAGR of
8.5% during the forecast period of 2018-2023. Asia-Pacific accounted for the largest share of around 40% of the
global market, whereas, North America was estimated to register the fastest CAGR over the forecast period.
According to estimates by the World Health Organization, 12–14 million people go abroad to receive medical
care each year. Medical tourism refers to travel by patients across countries for the purposes of obtaining
medical treatment and benefitting from the treatment, which might not be accessible in their own nation.
Destination countries are taking initiatives to attract medical tourists, offering medical services at more
affordable prices. From an estimated $27.9 billion in 2018, this field is projected to undergo a five-year
compound annual growth rate of 13.2%, according to BCC Research's new report, Medical Tourism Market:
Outlook and Trends.
Medical Tourism is broadly classified into following three categories:
• Medical Treatment / - Treatment for curative purpose that may include Conventional Therapies
cardiac surgery, Dental Tourism, Cosmetic Surgery Tourism , organ transplant, hip and knee replacement
etc.
• Wellness & Rejuvenation: Offerings focused on rejuvenation or for aesthetic reasons such as cosmetic surgery, stress relief, spas etc.
• Alternative Medicine: AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) would be the major category given the
Indian context.
Other popular alternative therapies are Music Therapy, Acupuncture, Aromatherapy
Hypnotherapy, Massage, Meditation, Mindfulness, Reiki.

ASIAN SCENARIO
Asia-Pacific is projected to the fastest growing region, registering a CAGR of 15.5% from 2017 to 2023.
With a collective market share of 45.2%, Thailand and Mexico dominated the medical tourism market in 2017, followed by India with a market share of
15.4%.
Thailand dominated the market in terms of revenue in 2018 due to the massive difference in treatment cost compared to developed countries.
Around 2.4 million people visited Thailand to seek medical care in 2017 . Thailand is also home to Asia's first largest private hospital, Bumrungrad
International Hospital, which is also the first hospital to receive a JCI accreditation and ISO 9001 certification. Till date, over 53 private hospitals have
received JCI accreditation.
While Thailand is popular for cosmetic procedures, India is most preferred for cardiovascular and orthopedic procedures. Brazil and Costa Rica, on
the other hand, are preferred for dental procedures.
Singapore, Colombia, Taiwan, and Spain are some of the fastest growing medical tourism destinations in this market.
INDIAN SCENARIO
Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) in India on medical visa during 2016 and 2017 were estimated at 4.27 lakh and 4.95 lakh respectively, registering a
positive growth of 15.9%.Indian Medical Tourism Industry 2017 worth $ 3 billion Indian Medical Tourism Industry 2020-worth $ 9 billion 20% of the
global market share Total revenue generated from medical tourism in 2017 –Rs. 1, 77,874 crore.
Maximum patients from Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Other than these two countries, medical tourists from Oman, Maldives, Uzbekistan, Sudan,
Iraq and Yemen visit India as well.
