The scaleable process controller foradvanced applications
Advant Controller 160 is the most advanced
process controller in the Advant Controller 100
series. It is a scaleable controller offering a full
complement of control and communication
functions. It is designed to suit a wide range of
industrial applications, from small to medium-
size, from logic to loops, either standing alone
or as part of an Advant OCS system. To in-
crease overall system reliability, all centralcomponents may be configured to include
redundancy.
It m anages all form s of control logic,
sequences, loops, counting and arithm etic.
And it supports true sequential event record-
ing by tim e tagging events on input m odules
w ith a 1 m s resolution.
It offers an RS 232 interface for M O D BU S I
or for rem ote term inal com m unications.
It is as suitable for stand-alone applications
as for distributed system s, on its ow n or inconjunction w ith other m em bers of the
Advant O CS O pen Control System .
It offers am ple processing pow er w ith 31 user-
definable, independent tasks, each running at
its ow n execution cycle tim e w hich can be as
low as 2 m s.
It is perfect to live and grow w ith, thanks to
its m ultitude of expansion possibilities and its
on-line program m ing capabilities.
It is configured in a subset of the A M PL
graphic program m ing language, using Advant
Station 100 Engineering Station.
It stores application program s in non-volatile
m em ory, not requiring battery back-up. The
program m em ory is electrically erasable,
perm itting instant reprogram m ing.

Advant Controller 160, when availability iscritically important
Expandability to suit any plant
Advant Controller 160 can be expanded and
m odified, as the plant it controls is expanded
and m odified. O ne w ay, the m ost obvious
one, is to add I/O m odules to the controller.
This can be done on-line, w ithout shutting it
dow n. Another expansion m ethod is to add
m ore I/O racks. A third m ethod is to connect
m ultiple A dvant Controller 160 stations into a
distributed system , using the high perform -
ance Advant Fieldbus 100. U p to 80 stations
can be interconnected in this w ay. To support
the toughest requirem ents for reliability,
Advant Fieldbus 100 m ay be installed w ith full
cable and bus-interface redundancy.Both coaxial and tw isted-pair bus cables m ay
be used, allow ing different bus length. For
im m unity against electrom agnetic interference,
optical cables and m odem s are available.
Turning low-cost personal computers
into high-power operator stations
The A dvaSoft for W indow s supervisory
softw are can turn alm ost any personal
com puter into a versatile process operator
station. The PC is connected to Advant
Fieldbus 100 and therefore able to access all
Advant Controller 100 series stations on the
bus for point-and-click-style process supervi-
sion and intervention.

m ake the controller the ideal choice for
integrating PLC s into process- or plant-w ide

For critical control applications, the station
can be configured to include redundancy in
all central functions such as data processing,
pow er supply, Advant Fieldbus 100 interfac-
ing and I/O bus extension. Changeover from
the one device to the other is totally bum p-
less and transparent, even betw een CPU s.

Advant Controller 160 is configured w ith theW indow s-based AdvaB uild Function Chart
Builder in AM PL, the graphic configuration/
program m ing language used throughout
Advant O CS w ith M aster softw are. It is as
w ell suited to logic and sequencing as to
arithm etic and continuous control. Applica-
tion program s are developed graphically,
sheet by sheet, by selecting the required
function blocks and then connecting them
internally and to the process.
The application program s look the sam e on
paper as on the screen. That is particularlyim portant w hen it is tim e for debugging.
The paper provides overview and the screen
details, including live updating of signal
values and back-tracking of configured
signals to the source.
All the right process connections
There is a full com plem ent of S600 I/O
m odules to choose from for digital and
analog inputs and outputs. The I/O range
covers both d.c and a.c., from low -cost,
high-density m odules to high-perform ance
m odules w ith kilovolt isolation. There is
even an intelligent pulse counter m odule for
accurate length m easuring and positioning
w hich can cope w ith pulse frequencies as
high as 100 kH z. And a rotational speed
input m odule w ith on-board trip logic w hich
is suitable for turbine control and other
rotating m achine applications.
All S600 I/0-m odules are enclosed in sheetm etal covers to IP20 w hich protect against
electrom agnetic interference inside the rack
and against rough handling outside it. The
field w iring is term inated on m ulti-pole
connectors that plug in on the front of the
m odules. This is both space-saving and tidy.
