Another Successful Sale Well, the 54th Annual Book Sale is under our belts. Before I

get to all the numbers, I would like to say thank you to

everyone who helped make the sale a success. So many

people volunteer their time...bin emptiers, book sorters,

pricers, box stackers, the hundreds of volunteers who help

with move in day and work the sale, the folks who help

advertise, our website coordinator, and the organizations

who help promote the sale. I would like to say a special

thanks to Nancy Eberly this year. She continued to tackle the

scheduling of all those folks during move-in and at the sale,

even when she moved out of the area. She also was a great

presence during the sale. Thank you, Nancy!

This year, our gross sales totaled $123,770 with

approximately 6,500 folks walking through the door. This is a

decrease in both dollars and attendance, but still certainly a

success!!! As many of you may know, a lot of activity was

going on at the corner of Park and Fox Hollow Road.

Graduation, our sale, a 4K race and a plant sale all happening

at the same time – this may have contributed to the lower

attendance and dollar amount. We will be looking into how

to increase attendance for next year.

Most folks who came to the sale had nothing but

compliments on the quality and quantity of our books as well

as the friendliness of our volunteers. We will continue to

strive to ensure the high standards for which we are known.

We start accepting books again on June 20th at the workshop

with hours on Tuesday and Friday. During the summer we

only cull books and box them up for the fall, so please stop on

by to help if you have a free morning. Thank you again to

everyone who assisted with making this great sale happen!

Happy Summer, everyone.—Donna Trapp, Sale Chair

Focus on Education

Attention branch members! Please join us for the annual AAUW-PA Summer Retreat at the Country Cupboard in Lewisburg. It will be held Saturday July 11th from 10:00 a.m.—3:00 p.m. at the Country Cupboard. This year’s program includes presentations from Ron Cowell, President of the Education and Policy Leadership Center in Pennsylvania; Public Policy Co-Chairs and Education Committee on AAUW-PA’s continuing state public policy initiative in public education as well as an update from the national AAUW convention. AAUW PA pays for two members from each branch to attend, which includes lunch. Additional branch members are welcome to attend, for the cost of the lunch, which is $20. This year all AAUW-PA electronic student affiliate members and student affiliate members are invited at no cost. Christina Kohl —

[email protected] Hello! I am excited to become a member of AAUW. I’ve met several members through my involvement in the middle school "Challenging Science Investigations (CSI) program that is funded generously by AAUW. I am honored that I can now say that I am a member!

I am a tenth grade biology teacher at State College Area High School. I attended Penn State University where I received both my BS degree in Biology and my Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

I am originally from Wilkes-Barre, PA where my parents and sister's family still reside. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, especially getting to spoil my niece and nephew. I look forward to getting to know branch members. Thank you for the support that AAUW has provided over the years.

Kate Hoffman —[email protected]

Hi, I’m Kate Hoffman. I earned my BA in English at Central CT State University, then went up to Burlington, VT to earn an MA in English, where I also fell in love with teaching. I came to State College, PA via Sandy Spring, MD (where I taught at a Quaker school for three years). Currently, I teach English at State High, read voraciously, and view life as an adventure.

I have been meaning to join the AAUW for ten years--ever since I moved here. After volunteering for the book sale for the past five years, a friendly nudge finally got me to join. I’m excited to work with such a strong organization of amazing people, and have taken on the Social Media Chair position. See the last page to learn how to “tweet” us.

Karen Brewster— [email protected]

My name is Karen Brewster. I am an Executive Assistant to the Dean in Penn State's College of Information Sciences and Technology.

My husband, Thom, and I have two children, Hannah, who attends Penn State, and a son, Xander, who is in the 10th grade at State High.

I have enjoyed attending the AAUW book sale for many years and have

always appreciated the efforts and hard work that go into planning such an event. I appreciate the support and lifelong learning opportunities that AAUW provides for women. I look forward to networking with other AAUW members.

Beth Keim — [email protected]

Hello! My first experience with the AAUW was discovering the wonderful book sale when we first moved to the State College area in 2001. Almost ten years ago, I got involved with the after-school STEM program for middle school girls, and with team members Christina Kohl and Wendy Watts, have been teaching the program ever since. I am so thankful of the opportunity to work with this program and with the wonderful women from the AAUW.

I received my BS in Chemistry from Juniata College in 1996 and my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Penn State in 2007. I have been teaching high school chemistry since 1997 and have been a teacher at State College Area High School since 2001. My husband and I live in Lemont with our two young sons. I look forward to continuing my involvement in this program and becoming more involved with AAUW.

Svetlana Rodionova —

[email protected]

Hi, I am Svetlana Rodionova. I earned my doctorate from the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory, and began my performing career in my native city of St. Petersburg, Russia. I performed numerous solo recitals and chamber concerts, both in St. Petersburg and on officially- sponsored tours of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. In 1992 I assumed a professorship at the Escola de Música Virtèlia in Barcelona, Spain, and in 2005, came to State College where I have appeared as a soloist with the Nittany Valley Symphony, the Penn’s Woods Festival Orchestra, and the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra. With my husband Matt Patton, a State College native, we divide our time between State College and Barcelona.

I've been coming to the AAUW book sale for ten years, and it is absolutely amazing. I realized recently that I was spending so much time there, I practically knew all volunteers. It’s been fun helping people find their literary treasures. I am thrilled to become an AAUW member.

WELCOME

Wendy Watts — [email protected]

Hello! I am Wendy Watts. I teach physics at the State College Area High School and am a teacher for the Challenging Science Investigations (CSI) program. The State College Branch of the AAUW has been sponsoring the CSI program since the mid-2000s, and I’ve been involved from the beginning. As a result, I have had the

honor and privilege to encourage many of our middle school girls to pursue their interests in science and engineering and have enjoyed working with a number of wonderful AAUW members.

I earned my BS in Engineering Science from Penn State in 1999. After graduation, a volunteering opportunity inspired me to purse my teaching certification. The following fall, 2002, I began my first year of teaching.

My husband, Rob, is a civil engineer. And our son is a lively, non-stop toddler. Teaching and family life keep my days full. But, I still look forward to working with the AAUW and the CSI Program.

Summer Math and

Science Programs…

Need You

MATHH (Magical Adventures for Talented Heroines and Heroes) will be held this

summer on July 21, 28, and August 4, with groups beginning at 1:30 and 2 pm. Each program lasts about an hour, with the first half hour held at Schlow Library and the second half hour held at Discovery Space. These programs are geared toward elementary school children. To volunteer, contact STEM Committee members Valerie Alstadt ([email protected]) or Candace Davison ([email protected]).

The summer program for middle-school girls in State College, CSI: Challenging Science Investigations will be held July 27-30 at the Mt. Nittany Middle School. AAUW volunteers are needed! To volunteer for any of these days, contact STEM co-chairs Mary Dupuis, [email protected] or Kristin Dreyer, [email protected]. Learn more about branch STEM programs at http://www.aauwstatecollege.org/stem.html.

Membership Matters

We were thrilled to be able to welcome six new members to the branch this past month. They will add vibrancy and diversity to our group. Surveys show that the number one reason people join a group is that they were personally asked by a friend or colleague. Each branch member plays a role here. The official AAUW membership year runs July 1, 2015–June 30, 2016. Dues are $67, divided as follows: $49 to AAUW, $10 to AAUW-Pennsylvania and $8 to the State College Branch. Learn more about us at http://www.aauwstatecollege.org/join.html, or contact Membership Co-VPs Carol Hodes ([email protected]) or Candace Davison ([email protected]).

AAUW provides millions of dollars in fellowships, grants and awards to outstanding women from around the globe and for community action projects. AAUW also funds pioneering research on women, girls, and education.
