Introduction

Advancement Performance is a tightly integrated package of Advancement Scorecards, Dashboards, reports and analytic capabilities, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Performance Metrics designed to give you and your management teams visibility into the performance of your advancement activities. It provides advancement officers, including campaign leadership, alumni relations staff, fundraisers, and other executive stakeholders with the information they need to track progress toward advancement goals and objectives. The solution will work, out-of-the-box, with Banner Advancement and Advance, and will take advantage of capabilities available in the Banner Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) solution, as well as provide pre-packaged analytics using Cognos.

The two product components of Advancement Performance are the Advancement Analytics for Cognos (AAC) and the Banner Enterprise Data Warehouse for Advancement (Banner EDW). The AAC includes the pre-built Cognos Business Intelligence™ components (reports, dashboards, performance charts, and scorecard) that enable you to analyze the advancement warehouse information. The Banner EDW includes components that support loading and maintaining advancement information into the warehouse.

This release guide covers the new features and enhancement add with AAC1.1.1 and Banner EDW 8.4. These releases include enhancements to areas of data coverage, several new reports and performance charts that illustrate the new data areas, and problem resolutions.

Enhancements for Advancement Analytics for Cognos 1.1.1

This release guide describes the following enhancements related to AAC 1.1.1.

New Cognos content

Several new reports and performance charts were added with this release. These reports and charts illustrate ways to look at the new data that is being exposed in the data models.

Enhancements for Banner EDW 8.4

This release guide describes the following enhancements related to Banner EDW 8.4.

New Advancement content

This release of the Banner EDW includes updated Cognos data models and new data warehouse stars that support loading and maintaining additional advancement information for the Manage Prospect Pipeline and Analyze Fundraising Progress business concepts.


Introduction

You can use these components to enhance advancement related reporting capabilities. If you license the Banner Enterprise Data Warehouse (AAC) product, these changes and additions support AAC reporting; however, you can use these components without the AAC product.

Prerequisites

For the most current information about BPRA, Source system, and Third Party product dependencies and compatibility for this release, refer to the current version of the Banner Performance Reporting & Analytics (BPRA) Resource Guidelines document available from the Documentation & Download area of the Customer Support Center.

There is a known IBM Cognos defect (APAR PM33387) that occurs when:

• Creating a query studio report in Cognos 10

Or

• Opening a Query Studio report that was created in Cognos 8.x when one of the ‘group by’ attributes that is within the 'collapsed' path of the report is ALSO a user definable filter. In these cases the filter and attribute data item are either broken or misplaced, causing the error in Cognos 10.

This issue affects the following Advancement Analytics for Cognos reports.

New reports

Several reports were added with this release of Advancement Analytics for Cognos. These reports illustrate how you can work with the new constituent and prospect data that was added with the release. You can use these reports out-of-the-box or as the basis for creating new reports.

The following reports were added with this release. The table identifies which Cognos Studio application the report was built in - Report Studio or Query Studio. These reports are based on data in the Manage Prospect Pipeline package. For more details about the new reports, refer to the Reports chapter of the Advancement Analytics for Cognos Handbook.

Annual Visits by Fundraiser Displays a year to year comparison of the total visit credit received by a fundraiser in comparison with other fundraisers.

Current Fundraiser Proposal Activity Trend

Provides insight about trends in a fundraiser’s proposal activity and proposal related engagements.

Fundraiser Daily Contact Report Detail

Provides contact report detail by fundraiser for a specified date range, with details such as who was contacted, who participated in the contact, and was an ask made as a part of this contact.

Fundraiser Portfolio Contact Action List

Provides a detailed list of prospects within a fundraiser's portfolio that need to be contacted. Also, this report provides relevant information about each prospect that is required to evaluate and prioritize next actions with the prospect

Prospect Contact Aging By Rating Provides a summary of prospects contacted by fundraisers and the duration since they were contacted. The information provided in this report is grouped by the prospect’s rating.

Fundraiser Contact Credit by Month Summary

Provides a visual breakdown of the type of contacts a fundraiser received credit for in a specified year and month.

Fundraiser Contact Goal Comparison by Contact Credit Trend

Provides year to year trends in a fundraiser’s contact goals and progress towards those goals.

Fundraiser Contacted Prospects by Month Summary

Displays the pattern of monthly contacts for a fundraiser compared to their goals.

Fundraiser Progress to Overall Contact Goal by Month Trend

Displays the summary of how many prospects have been contacted by a fundraiser in a defined time period.

The new advancement related components are briefly described in this enhancement section with pointers on where you can find more detailed information.

Changed Cognos Framework Manager model

The sghe_apm Cognos Framework Manager model was updated to include additional query subjects sourcing from the added warehouse tables in the Manage Prospect Pipeline and Analyze Fundraising Progress packages.

Changed business concepts

Several new areas of data are now available in both the Manage Prospect Pipeline (MPP) and Analyze Fundraising Progress (AFP) business concept data models. The following table identifies the new areas of information, the query subjects that were added to the data models, and which models they have been added to. The table also specifies which information can be sourced from Advance, Banner Advancement, or both.

For more details about the new query subjects and the specific elements added to them, refer to the Business Concepts chapter of the Advancement Analytics for Cognos Handbook.

The data models are delivered as part of the Banner Enterprise Data Warehouse release that supports the Advancement Analytics for Cognos product. The changes to the models are included here because they are the basis for the Advancement Analytics for Cognos components.

The following new Framework Manager (FM) models and methods have been introduced in this release:

Conformed Database View model

As a means to simplify maintenance and packaging of the Banner EDW models, we have separated out the Database View layer from the models into one conformed model, which

contains all database objects referenced within the delivered models. Although your institution may not have every database object referenced within your physical database, the referenced objects can remain in the FM model with no impact to functionality. You should be aware that errors will appear for those objects not present in the database when verifying the model.

The following figure illustrates how the Database View layer is separated from the models into one conformed model:

For purposes of manageability and unique naming requirements, there are separate namespaces defined within the Data View layer for BRM-specific objects as well as snapshot versions of fact tables. These namespaces are “Recruiting and Admissions Performance” and “Snapshot - Fact Area”.

You need to create an “Institutional Values” folder within this layer to provide a source set of query items that will be used for models centered around a business concept. The “Parameter Map Queries" folder within the Institutional Values folder contains query subjects to be used as source queries for parameter maps.

Business concept models

To further improve extensibility and maintenance, FM models are maintained separately for each business concept. This will prevent performance issues tied to opening and enhancing models. Additionally, this will provide increased flexibility for packaging. For example, the Analyze Fundraising Progress model can be delivered separately to those clients that have licensed Banner Recruiting and Admissions Performance as opposed to those who have licensed the baseline Banner Enterprise Data Warehouse. Each model is specific to a given business concept. If the business concept has an associated snapshot version, that will be included within the same model.

Each FM model consists of a business concept-specific namespace as a starting point to properly allow for segment linking. The database view would be a namespace linked from the conformed database model, as illustrated in the following figure:

Each business concept model would contain its relevant business and presentation view layers along with their associated packages. It is important to mention that the presentation view within this model should contain an Institutional Values folder that references the queries it needs from the linked Database View along with any additional items that may be required. Parameter maps specific to a given business concept should be maintained within the business concept model as well.

Packaging and delivery

The log files are not delivered. It is recommended that you maintain institution-specific modifications through transaction history scripts that can be rerun against each subsequent model version. Eliminating these files will slim the model deliveries, by reducing the unneeded file maintenance and improving performance on the management of the model through Framework Manager.

All Banner EDW/Performance Management clients would receive the conformed database view model. The Banner EDW clients would get the EDW Common model that contains the original snapshot stars and all PM business concepts based upon the Banner-only data. The PM clients would get the models for the business concepts delivered with their product.

Model configuration and maintenance

All business concept models make use of a linked or segmented database view layer. This database view layer exists as a Cognos Framework Manager project to itself. When examining models using FM, it is necessary to have the pm_database_view model folder available at the same directory level as the business concept model within which you wish to navigate.

The following picture illustrates what this directory structure would look like for a client with licenses for Banner EDW and all the Performance Management products.

When creating or updating a business concept model, the database view model files (within the pm_database_view directory) should be set as read-only to prevent unintentional changes. When segments are linked in a model, updates made within the referencing model will carry through to the source. However, when the linked segment is read-only, the associated objects will be grayed out in the referencing model to prevent editing.

The changed technical objects are part of the Banner EDW.

The edw80400_changed_objects.csv file includes a detailed list of the objects (views, tables, columns) that were added, changed, or removed with the warehouse release. To view the list, access the edw80400_changed_objects.csv file, which was delivered with your product documentation. You can open the file in Microsoft Excel or a similar spreadsheet application. You can reorganize the columns as needed.
