Getting to know you

Choose two or three of the topics you talked about in class this afternoon.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………

…………

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………

…………

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………

…………

Ask two people in your host family (or other people who aren’t in your class) about the topics, and make notes of the answers. (Remember to ask for more information, and to sound interested while they’re talking!)

Newspaper Articles

A. Read this gossip that Danny is passing on to Joe.

B. Underline the parts of the story which would have appeared in the newspaper article. What other information do you think the article would have given? (Think about names, details, interviews, etc) Make some notes.

Hey, Joe… Did you see the local paper this morning? Big Scandal! Apparently there’s been all kinds of corruption at the cheese factory. Everyone’s talking about the manager – the rumour say he’s been nicking money from the company for years. They reckon he’s taken over £100 000!! But that’s not all – the story is that loads of people

knew exactly what was going on but they never said anything because he was always giving them extremely generous bonuses, and basically paying them to keep quiet. So now no one will admit to being involved, and nobody knows who was and who wasn’t. But one thing everyone is sure of – the boss is bound to leave this week. I don’t reckon he’s got

much choice in the matter…..

C. Now think about headlines. What do you think the headline of this story would have been?

D. Now re-write the article as it would have appeared in the newspaper. Think about the style and language used by the press, and try to imitate this. Use the passive voice whenever it is appropriate, and don’t forget that some of the words and expressions used by Danny may be too informal for a written report.
