Description This course immerses students in the Visual Art world. Students experience a range of different art styles and techniques. It connects students to the arts in the broader community through student participation in collaborative community and public art projects. Students will have the opportunity to work directly with practicing artists and participate in art exhibitions and art events.

Description What do video games zombies and crosses have in common? Why has that painting - that looks like it was done in primary school - sold for 72.8 million US dollars? And what’s up with Barbie legs and Ariel’s waistline? And did you know that fairy tales weren't originally for children and are way more bizarre, ridiculous, and interesting than you ever thought possible?

Through this course, students will have the opportunity to delve into the many puzzling and bizarre questions about art, mythology, legends and mysteries. Students will develop their investigation and artistic skills, with a wide range of activities designed to improve their creative and critical thinking.

Complex (The Dish). Plan, organise and fundraise a school camp to our nation’s capital Canberra. Learn

about the historical, political, and scientific importance of these landmarks, and plan out an itinerary of

your choice.

Assessment Students will be assessed according to the Achievement Standard relevant to the subject discipline and

year level. Assessments will be tailored to the purpose of the course and the learning needs of the class.

Catering in the Community

Subject Length 1 Semester

Description This course will explore the understanding and needs for catering for large groups within the community.

Students may be involved in catering for whole school events as well as catering opportunities to serve others to expose themselves to authentic hospitality experiences.

Practical lessons will enable students to gain hands-on cooking skills whilst learning about the food and hospitality industry, catering, and serving food for large groups. Theory work will foster investigative and research skills, critical and creative thinking skills as well as industry knowledge.

Student will be expected to work in small teams as well as a whole group with assigned roles for entire projects. Students will need a basic level of skill in cooking and display sufficient ability to work collaboratively and safely in a kitchen. Students will be assessed on both practical and theoretical components.

Assessment Practical 50%

Folio Tasks 50% (Investigation tasks, planning and evaluations)

Recommendation Students must have an interest in cooking.

Ideal for students that work well in small and large groups.

Description Students partner with the local council or community organisations to contribute meaningfully to a local

community development project. Depending on the nature and scope of the project students can be

involved in community consultation, planning & design, implementation & construction, official openings

or ceremonies. Local projects could include new CBD smart city, sporting precinct, black spot road

upgrades, re-development of parks & play spaces, rubbish & waste management, beautification of

space.

Assessment Students will be assessed according to the Achievement Standard relevant to the subject discipline and

year level. Assessments will be tailored to the purpose of the course and the learning needs of the class.

Crime Scene Investigation

Description Forensic science is the application of science to criminal and civil laws, mainly—on the criminal side—during criminal investigation, as governed by the legal standards of admissible evidence and criminal procedure.

Forensic scientists collect, preserve, and analyse scientific evidence during the course of an investigation. While some forensic scientists travel to the scene of the crime to collect the evidence themselves, others occupy a laboratory role, performing analysis on objects brought to them by other individuals

In addition to their laboratory role, forensic scientists testify as expert witnesses in both criminal and civil cases and can work for either the prosecution or the defence. While any field could technically be forensic, certain sections have developed over time to encompass the majority of forensically related cases.

Description In this course, students will learn how to formulate and execute advanced arguments in a practical setting. Students will have the opportunity to look into the great speakers of the past and learn to apply valuable techniques and skills into their own speaking. Students in the course will also learn how to structure arguments for formal debates, and will have the opportunity to join the SADA Schools Debating Competition. Students will learn practical skills that will help them improve their public speaking and their advanced reasoning skills.

Description This subject is designed to suit those students who have an interest in cooking and are keen to develop their practical ability and understanding in a variety of cooking methods. It is assumed that all students who select this course will be willing to participate in all practical activities to the best of their abilities. The Desserts covered in the course will be selected to suit the interests and abilities of the students, but will vary over different styles to allow students to develop a range of skills and abilities.

There will be a variety of different topics which will be covered throughout the semester, which include:

Hot Desserts – A selection of hot desserts such as Puddings, Soufflés, Fritters etc.

Cold Desserts – A selection of cold desserts such as Cream desserts, Jellies, Meringues etc.

Frozen Desserts – A selection of frozen desserts such as Ice-cream, Sorbets, Parfaits etc.

Sweet Sauces – A selection of sweet sauces such as Coulis, Anglaise, Cream Sauces etc

Subject Length 1 Semester

Description This subject is designed to suit those students who have an interest in P.E. and are keen to develop their practical ability and understanding in a variety of sports. The course is designed to benefit those who are keen to pursue P.E. and Sports Studies in year 11 and 12. It is assumed that all students who select this course are willing to participate in practical activities to the best of their abilities. The sports covered in the course will be selected to suit the interests and abilities of the students, but will vary over different styles to allow students to develop a range of skills and abilities.

The topics and sports covered during the semester will change depending on the interests and abilities of the students in the class, however each topic/sport will develop and assess skill execution, initiation of tactics, collaboration and teamwork, and understanding of rules and officiating. Students will need to demonstrate their understanding of the rules in different sports by playing by the rules and respecting decisions. Students will also develop their ability to officiate games to develop their knowledge of the rules and their communication skills.

Description Genius Hour is an educational program developed to prepare students for future study in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. There is a large movement to include Arts into STEM and call it STE(A)M, because the Arts foster great creativity and all great breakthroughs in Maths and Science, in particular, require creativity. STEM or STEAM is about integration and collaboration. In addition to subject-specific learning, STEM aims to foster inquiring minds, logical reasoning, and collaboration skills. In our case it is the latter that we need to be focussing on. The critical and creative thinking, the problem solving, the student driven learning, independent learning.

You are all Geniuses, you are in Charge of your learning and you are expected to change things. Students are expected to Use their HANDS to build/make/learn about something that is in your HEART (something that you are passionate about) and this will improve your Mind.

Description The fundamental focus is on promoting positive wellbeing in yourself and in others, looking at both causes ohealth issues and preventative methods. Course content will cover a range of contemporary issues relevant to mental, emotional and physical health. It is expected that students have an interest in their own health and promoting wellbeing. Students interested in a career in health services including; social work, nursing and medicine, recreational health and nutrition may benefit from this course. Collaborative work is a key focus in this course and therefore students must be willing to participate in teams and group discussion. At time Individual investigation and research will be required on contemporary health issues chosen by students.

Description As the oldest continuous culture, Aboriginal people have amassed a huge breadth of knowledge.

Develop an appreciation for living in harmony with the land by exploring agriculture, aquaculture,

bushfire, bush medicine, tools, weather patterns, landmarks and stars. Find out different ways to manage

community and family life, such as skin groups, trade and ceremonies with neighbouring nations. Identify

the meanings of symbols found in various art forms such as paintings, engravings, artefacts, poetry and

songs. Learn about modern Aboriginal leaders and their profound impact on music, arts, science,

literature, sports, politics, education and contemporary issues in society.

Assessment Students will be assessed according to the Achievement Standard relevant to the subject discipline and

year level. Assessments will be tailored to the purpose of the course and the learning needs of the class.

Description The Intensive Literacy course is designed specifically to assist students with or without and NEP who

have difficulty with reading, writing, comprehension, spelling and or oral language.

The course is tailored to students individual and specific literacy needs. Class numbers are restricted so

students have access to one on one support from the teacher. Students are set tasks by the teacher and

are also encouraged to bring current work from other classes to work on with the teacher or class

Ancillary support staff.

Assessment Students will be assessed on their development according to the Achievement Standard of the Australian

curriculum, targeting areas specific to the individual child’s needs.

Recommendation Students are recommended by teachers for this subject based on NAPLAN, and PAT test results,

assessment results and assessment by the Speech Pathologist

Pre-requisite Students who have difficulty in English

Notes Both parents and subject teachers are able to recommend a child but the final decision for the child

entering the class will be based on the above criteria.

This course explores the impact of different cultures on food choices around the world and investigates how these cultures influence modern Australian cuisine. Students will have input into the countries and regions they want to explore. Students will be introduced to unusual and foreign ingredients, where they come from and how to cook them.

Practical lessons will feature heavily to enable students to gain hands-on cooking skills whilst learning about different cultures through food. Theory work will develop investigative and research skills, critical and creative thinking as well as cultural awareness. Students will also have the opportunity to cater for people in order to introduce them to hospitality skills.

Topics covered will be determined through student interest and may include the following:

Party food-what do people eat during different celebrations around the world?

Iconic/signature dishes of different countries

What is Modern Australian Cuisine?

Description This subject is designed to suit those students who have an interest in Home Economics or Food and

Hospitality, and are keen to develop their practical ability and understanding of the hospitality industry. It is assumed that all students who select this course are willing to participate in practical activities to the best of their abilities. The theme covered in the course will be selected to suit the interests and abilities of the students, and different tasks will allow students to develop a range of skills and abilities. The course is designed to provide students with an understanding of how all aspects of a restaurant function together to create a successful business.

Topics Topics covered may include:

Back of house – Learning how to work in a commercial kitchen, how to run a successful service period and developing cooking skills.

Front of house – Learning waiting, and table service skills.

Bar service – Learning about soft drinks and espresso coffee service.

Description Through a selection process, students will nominate a preferred team.

Student Voice Students work collaboratively to find solutions to issues arising. Student Voice may include being a member of the School Board Youth Action Team (YAT) Student will be representatives on the Northern Adelaide State Secondary Schools Alliance (NASSSA) Youth Action Team as well as a Student Voice member. This group meets twice a month, at various NASSSA schools.
