Webinar Summary

This webinar will review recent developments in Human Machine Interface technology (HMI) that enables real time monitoring of industrial processes and communication of KPI’s to management.

The use of specialized software also is discussed so that these machine output measures are converted into a data base and real time management reports of factors such as downtime and equipment performance.

Applications for utilization of hand held devices, the cloud and other innovations will also be presented.

Finally, a framework for evaluating innovative technology is proposed to create a systematic process for implementation of these new technological advances.

Computer Applications

Computer and storage technology is evolving rapidly. Today, cloud computing is enabling the consolidation of traditional IT functions with entirely new capabilities. For example, many large-scale data centers are now providing traditional IT services along with new data analytics services.

Hence, these large-scale data centers require highly efficient server and storage systems. Traditional CPU technology limits performance, as the use of frequency scaling as a way to increase performance has ended. The end of frequency scaling has caused a shift to multicore processing. However, multicore processing has diminishing returns in terms of increasing true application performance due to limits in I/O and memory bandwidth.

New acceleration technologies exist to enable higher speed data processing by providing customized high-bandwidth, low-latency connections to network and storage systems. In addition, these  provide compression, data filtering, and algorithmic acceleration.

Also, there are acceleration solutions for computer and storage systems.

Consumer Electronics (Cont’d)

The rapidly evolving consumer electronics market offers an ever widening array of amazing new products, including flat panel displays, portable media players, and home networking products.

They are dramatically improving every year by continually adding features.

This fast evolution puts tremendous competitive time pressure on consumer electronic manufacturers for products with the latest technology.

Using low-cost programmable logic and improved storage disks enables a fast, risk-free path to high volume and helps you handle nearly continuous change while still maintaining project deadlines

Definition of HMI

(Human Machine Interface) The user interface in a manufacturing or process control system. It provides a graphics-based visualization of an industrial control and monitoring system. Previously called an "MMI" (man machine interface), an HMI typically resides in an office-based Windows computer that communicates with a specialized computer in the plant such as a programmable automation controller (PAC), programmable logic controller (PLC) or distributed control system (DCS). Contrast with OI. See PAC, PLC, DCS, GUI and user interface.

Operator Interface

A low-level graphical interface to a specialized computer on the plant floor such as a programmable automation controller (PAC), programmable logic controller (PLC) or distributed control system (DCS). Typically built into a ruggedized terminal for shop floor use, it provides a remote interface to the push buttons, switches and gauges found on the equipment itself. An OI does not offer the rich graphics and flexibility as do Windows and Mac-based interfaces. Contrast with HMI. See PAC, PLC and DCS.
