USING STORIES TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS IN YOUR MARKETING

When we were quite young some of us grew up with our parents telling us bed-time stories. Personally as a child I looked forward to those wonderful bonding times with my dad. Often times the stories were about animals, birds and forests. Did you experience anything of such while growing up? How time flies! Now that I'm an adult it‟s my turn to tell such stories to my kids. My kids could be very funny sometimes though. They will always trouble me to tell them one…where‟s the time! Often times we use cartoons to cover-up these days! Well, the point is, even being an adult did not make my love for interesting stories wane. I still love stories. People around me, as I have noticed love stories as well. Again as a teacher, I tell beautiful stories to my students sometimes also. It bonds us like a family. In the course of my marketing, I have noticed that stories of events get people's attention more than anything else, because almost everyone love stories. When you tell stories, people are more engaged and focused at what you say. I realized that, and I employed the use of stories in selling my products.

And the result? My sales have exploded and I make more sales than without stories. How do I do this you may ask? I look for stories around me for illustration purposes. I tie in my personal experiences, that of others or just any event that is related to what I want to say. What I do is, I use it in a way that will tie in to selling whatever product I have in mind. To do this, I have to think on how that event "fits" my present project. I will show you exactly, how I used one of my personal stories to market this very popular product that I developed. Probably you also read the story when signing in for this course. Here goes my story to sell this product. The Video That Re-Invented Me

Dear friend,

my name is Benaiah Orajereyor Agejivwie-Edeyan. I am the Basic

Technology teacher at Fountain Heights Secondary School, Surulere, Lagos.

I'm the CEO-Fega's Innovations, Book Reviewer with Cambridge University

Press on Basic Science and Technology, Author (Basic Technology Made Easy

JS1-3), Writer, Public Speaker, a professional blogger, husband and a loving

father of three wonderful kids.

You may be familiar with a popular quote that says ‘If you’ve always done

things the same way, you will always get the same results time and again.’

It is also stated as 'If you always do what you’ve always done, you will

always get what you’ve always got'.

In my case, I decided otherwise...I changed the way I used to do things and

things changed.

Some few years back I stumbled on a short video on youtube. I went

through it in a hurry then but saved it on my system. When I got home I

went through it thoroughly again…boy! That video reinvented my entire life

and got me into action.

One basic lesson that got me hooked in that video is the power of providing

workable solutions to people’s problems and making a living from it. The

video also exposed how one can provide solutions with a model that is easily

accessible on a global platform.

As one who is hungry to implement what he was learning, I put every breath

in me into work. Yes, it took time and sometimes sleepless nights. I knew

exactly what I wanted, where I needed to be and how I had to get to my

goal.

I was focused and gradually the result started showing up slowly. It started

growing, little by little and the process is still ongoing as I write this.

Through that video, I have begun the most interesting and enjoyable skill-

set anyone who wants to really succeed should explore. I continue to see

myself as a work in progress.

I know I’m a teacher by profession (I’m proud to be one who molds young

lives). I know you are proud also to be called a teacher. However, do you

know on the financial side most teachers in Nigeria are living in penury? That

will be a story for another day.

With my new skill set, let me show you briefly what I’m able to make on a

consistent basis every single week. Time and space will fail me if I have to

display every single screenshot on this short piece. I will only show you what

I had in a week last October/November, 2018.

I had to screen off the names of those who made these payments for

security purpose. Again, I didn’t sort their permission before this write-up.

my account consistently. This is apart from my meager salary I receive as a

class room teacher for now. (Did I hear you say why am I still teaching in a

school?) The truth would hit you soon...

In any case, that's how powerful and rewarding my new skill-set has made

me become.

The story you just read above was an email cum landing page promotion I used when I was introducing subscribers to this course. From the story my audience knew I was trying to get them to discover a new program. But I did not go straight to tell them to join because that would be a boring subject to them.

First, as one who likes videos, I used the expression „The Video That…to introduce the subject (You can see it in the subject line of the email above). The subject line will increase email open rate because the subject line is filled with curiosity. Then I went on to add my own life story, and of course I believed this really got the interest of my audience because it resonates with them. Many sales have been made as a result of that email to prove how effective using stories to market can be. At least, if not anything the story convinced you and you finally obtained my training course. So you can model yours in the same way when you start your blogging business. However at the end of your emails, always ensure there is a "HOOK" that will keep your readers anticipating your next message. A "HOOK" is a message that tells the reader that more of the goodies or stories are still on the way and that he should be in expectation of it. So it will keep them engaged and force them to open your email the next time it arrives in their inbox. In fact the above scenario is just one way to use stories effectively. But please, make sure that your stories are true and natural. Let it be real such that your readers can relate to it naturally. If this is not professionally done you may bore your readers and discourage them from future newsletters.

Again, illustration is another very powerful way to engage your readers and get them to act on the offer or marketing message you want to deliver. All you need to do is tie in an appropriate illustration to the message you are sending out. People will respond because fitting illustrations is very powerful and makes more impact than just asking them to do something directly. The reason is, everyone perceives any situation deeper when it is illustrated. The power of perception is at play when illustrations are used for marketing products because the events or stories or experiences told puts that person in that picture and leaves a lasting impression on his mind. This singular strategy has been responsible for the success rate in the movement of many products and services you see around. Why Use Stories? The use of stories is powerful because people love being entertained and informed. It's fun to read about stories, because they are not boring stuff like reading a science textbook or a recipe for cooking except of course, if that is what that person is deeply interested in. However, most times, people would rather read stories or be entertained than read some boring sales message.

At the same time that you present your message with stories, ensure that there is something the reader can take home from that message. Each message you send out to your reader must be something that will help or add value to their lives. When a reader or subscriber knows that he will learn one thing from your newsletters, he will be obliged to open almost every email you send out. Content Marketing Activities When you are setting up your blog, there are actually four things you will do on the area of content marketing before the money will start rolling in. Here they are: 1. Write The First 5 Batch of Pillar Articles At this point, I want to believe you have decided on the niche market you want to serve. I mean on the topic to write on or blog on. I want to also believe that your blog is all set up and ready for publishing at this stage! The first thing you need to do is to write your first five pillar articles so that when you start driving traffic, your readers will have something to read when they land on your blog. It is vital that this is done before you start marketing or advertising your blog. 2. Write A Free Report (Give Away)

I have added a bonus on this program that will show you how to write a convincing report. Kindly complete that work before any other commitments. You will need to build an email list as your blog readers grow. This is where your email autoresponder comes in. The work of your email autoresponder as we have identified in the previous module is to take care of mass mailing, storage, follow- ups, generating subscriber form, etc. You will need to write a free report around the problem your market is experiencing. The free report can be anywhere from 5 to 10 pages. It should be very valuable information that can be sold, but you give it away free to your audience. For example, if your market is about skin care on women‟s health, you can write a short 5 – 6 paged report on the "3 Causes of Pimples, and 3 Natural Remedies". There could be more advanced and effective remedies, but you can write on just 3 remedies and causes. You can easily get this information by spending just 30 minutes to 1 hour to get ideas on what to write on from search on the Internet. You may use Google.com for this exercise. Once you are done, ensure you write everything on Microsoft Word. Format your fonts, header subject lines, etc, then convert the finished work to a PDF. If you use 2010 Microsoft Word, conversion to PDF is a breeze. Just click on "Save As", the pop-up dialogue box will show

several options, just select PDF and type the name you wish to save it as. Go back to the file where you saved it, your report will be waiting for you in 2 formats; PDF and Microsoft Word. If you don't have Microsoft Word, you can head over to www.pdf995.com or https://get.adobe.com/reader/

download the two software for your conversion. Full conversion process is detailed on the site. (Video available on how this is done is in Module 8. 3. Write Autoresponder Email Follow Ups All the email series you have written in story format should be queued in your email autoresponder. For a start, you can write the first 7 emails to be delivered to your audience over the course of 2 weeks. These emails should be written around a product which likely is the solution to their problems. This is where your money comes in…when people buy your products or services. When you start writing email series using the “Telling stories” style, make an effort not to sell in your very first email. First introduce yourself, let your readers know what to expect by joining your email newsletters. Tell them a little about yourself, then promise to deliver the best quality information to them from that point forward.

Taking this little but vital step will ensure that you get them anticipating or looking forward to your future emails. Start your email stories from the second email you send to them and gradually mention whatever product you wish to sell them from email 3 after educating them about it in email 2. 4. Create Weekly Blog Articles Articles on your blog are the life blood of your business. Ensure you create a routine to publish either weekly or bi-weekly. Any length of time beyond that is not good for your business. It‟s best to write weekly free article publications on your blog to educate and help your readers. Writing one article every 2 weeks should be the least you should go, if you can‟t write weekly. If you write once per month, your readers may forget who you are, and I‟m sure you would not want that. That would mean losing the exclusive trust factor that makes people buy. In summary, in your email follow ups, when you learn how to use stories to sell your products, your audience will not feel as if they are sold to. The result? You would move more products and services as long as your stories are engaging enough and reaches the heart of your audience. Review Points 1. Write 5 pillar articles of 700 – 1200 words and publish on your blog before you start driving traffic to your blog. 3. Make it a routine to publish fresh articles on your blog every week or bi-weekly, and notify your readers of the new post by sending them an email broadcast. By next week, you will learn in a video the exact process of converting a Microsoft Word file to a PDF. Is there a need for a video in this module 7 tutorial?
