  • SHALOM FROM THE DIRECTOR

I am writing this column as I await the arrival of my first grandchild. Memories of my paternal grandfather come

flooding back. Visiting “grandpa” every week at the

former Jewish Geriatric Home in Philadelphia, was a

highlight of my childhood. He was the quintessential

Jewish immigrant from a Russian shtetl, equipped with

tales, parables and bubbemeisers, echoing the stories of

Isaac Bashevis Singer. Although orphaned, widowed

twice, virtually uneducated, and barely making a living

as a junk dealer, he was the epitome of a “salt of the

earth”, humble, intuitive, rational individual. He was and

continues to be one of the few people I have admired

    and emulated throughout my life.

If my relationship with my granddaughter, (yes, it is a

girl,) is half as wonderful as the one I had with my

grandfather, I will feel blessed. It was my grandfather

who inspired me to work with older adults for the last 35 years. In fact, many of you have been my role models

for not only aging gracefully, but also for having special

relationships with your grandchildren. All of my friends

say you can’t imagine how wonderful the relationship is

until you have the opportunity to experience it.

So, as many of you have carried the torch of family traditions, histories, and memories onto your children and grandchildren, I am now taking very seriously this special role and phase in my life. I recently saw the Disney Pixar movie COCO, that focuses on the importance of remembering those that have passed so their memories can live on from generation to generation, from L’dor V’Dor. I will receive nachas (joy) from my grandchildren as you and my grandfather have received from the generations that have come after you.

    JERSEY PINELANDS

On Friday, July 27, the Katz JCC Adult Department

hosted the Pinelands Preservation Alliance who gave a talk and video demonstration on the New Jersey Pine

    Barrens.

Former New Jersey Governor Christine Whitman

perhaps said it best when she said, "I think the only way

we can insure that the Pinelands are protected in the way

that it should be is if the public buys into it. There are too

many special interests that can have influence that we

rather they didn't have on those making the

decisions. Those decision makers respond to the public

and if the public says no, this is something special, this is a

treasure, this is unique and therefore don't mess with it,

    they will listen."

    COUPLES CLUB

The Couples Club celebrated its 20th Anniversary at our

July meeting. The club came into existence soon after

the JCC opened its doors on Springdale Road. There

were other singles and couples groups in existence at

the JCC, but they did not meet the needs of those who

    founded the Couples Club.

The founding group sought a welcoming environment

that would attract couples who wanted to enjoy and

expand their newly found retirement life style in the

greater Cherry Hill area. This included day trips, eating

out, making new friends, attending meetings with

    interesting speakers, celebrating holidays, and

attending shows, to name a few. With the blessing of

the JCC, the Couples Club opened their doors for

membership twenty years ago. We celebrated with a

    festive “nosh” after the meeting.

Our July meeting program featured three Shlichim,

emissaries from Israel, serving as counselors at the JCC

Camps at Medford—Orel, Stav, and Zohar. They told us

about themselves, their time in the military, families,

    and their future plans.

We try to keep our members active. At Couples Club

meetings, dinners and social events, we find people

smiling and enjoying themselves all the time. Why not

try us out? We have a lot of events planned for the next

    few months.

The Couples Club usually meets the second Tuesday of the month, 7:30 pm, at the JCC, in the social hall.

However, our next meeting is Thursday, September 6.

We had to move our usual meeting date due to Rosh

Hashanah. As members of the JCC , you and your

significant other can join the Couples Club as part of

your JCC membership. If you are interested in

attending a meeting, stop by the Adult Department for

    more information.
