From: Students received four years of college education, front-loaded at the beginning of adulthood.

To: Students received a lifetime of learning opportunities.

6

• 6 years over a lifetime

• Knowledge was obtained across classrooms & practical settings

• Seasoned adults returned to pivot careers & reconnect with community

• Students began studies at a range of ages

• Populi returned as expert practitioners & enriched campus life

• 4 years during ages 18-22

• Formal learning occurred in the classroom only

• Limited access to academic setting later in life

• Students needed to prove ability by age 18 to be accepted

• Alumni returned to campus occasionally for selected events

Learning Recognition Collaborative

The Learning Recognition Collaborative will formally launch in January 2020. In the interim, we are inviting 100 colleges and universities to a pilot program. Participating institutions will receive early access to the online implementation toolkit, participate in monthly learning sessions and collaborate with others in their cohort.

Breakout Session Guidance

16

Break into groups by state

Take a look at your state PLA policy

Think about/discuss how well you believe it aligns with the needs of today's learners

Page 17: Adult Promise Convening Panel & Workshop...beyond high school where all learning can be validated and valued regardless of where it happens and efficiently contribute to individuals

PLA Policy Evaluation

State 1• State statute establishes a college-credit

equivalency program to award academic credit for previously completed courses at a high school, business school, trade school, adult-education school or in military training that are equivalent to courses offered for credit in the University system. Credit for work or other experience may be awarded at the discretion of the institution. Institutions must make public the list of courses eligible for academic credit, number of credits that may be earned for each course, minimum standards and grades to earn credit, and criteria by which military experience will be assessed.

State 2 • State Regents system policy requires that public

institutions create and implement policies to award credit for prior learning. The system policy outlines general principles with which the institutional policies must conform. Students must successfully complete 12 or more semester hours at the institution before credit awarded for prior learning is placed on their transcript. Credit awarded may be applied to a degree program. Military training is considered part of prior learning experience.

Reflection/Callout

18

What growth opportunities do you see for your state policy?

What will this mean for my state’s policy environment?

What will this mean for my state budget?

How can your state lead on Today’s Learners and Today’s Providers?
