1st Round Online Judging The Alameda County Fair Fine Art Exhibition is a juried exhibition. Not all entries are accepted. Fine Art Department entries will be judged first from uploaded images viewed online to determine if the submitted entry meets the basic requirements to participate in this competition and the subjective standards for exhibition set by the judges. All entries will be juried by recognized authorities in the art world. Tips and Instructions on How to Enter… Mandatory Online Entry Process for all entries in the Fine Arts Department. You will need a digital photo of your art piece, or PDF for Poetry in order to enter the contest. See

below, ‘Simple tips for photographing artwork for non-photographers’.

Digital image size: For online entries, the ideal resolution in pixels is 800 x 800 (length x width).

Images that are larger than this need to be resampled (resized) to that size while still maintaining the original aspect ratio. It’s fine to upload images that do not match the ‘ideal size’. The maximum storage size limit is 6 MB.

Division / Class: An entry eligible in more than one Division and/or Class should be entered in the

Division and /or Class for which it best qualifies. The Alameda County Fair or the judge may disqualify or transfer to the correct Class (at his/her discretion) any entry, which is not a true representative of the Division or Class in which it is entered. It is not, however, the responsibility of the Alameda County Fair or a judge to transfer an entry to the correct Class or Division.

Title: Use a short title: it may be abbreviated to accommodate the label space. If you do not want

to title your piece, you will need to enter “untitled”. If you have more than one “untitled”, put a number after the word. For example, “untitled 1 ‘, “untitled 2”, etc. Adding one descriptive word ex: ‘tree’, ‘owl’ helps track the art piece. Please choose your title carefully. The title cannot be changed later. This exact title is what will appear on the wall next to your piece if it gets displayed in the exhibition.

Sale Price: If art is for sale, include price or indicate “NFS” if not for sale. We do not have POR

(Price on Request) or B/O (Best Offer) as an option. Paintings and sculpture DO sell at the Fair so, please, choose your price carefully so that you will be happy if it sells. The Fair takes a 20% sales commission from each sale. Sale prices cannot be changed. No changes after registration. No exceptions.

Description: The description can be brief. Mention of medium and subject content is ideal. The description does not go on the wall label.

“Mail for the Dead”

At work, I inherited a mail slot from Larisa Mayakovskaya – a Russian theoretician who visited for a few years. She was also the mistress of a tenured Russian man, much hated. He paid Larisa from grants for both science and sex, while she sent the US dollars back to her sons in St. Petersburg. She told me this. She told me about her sons. One was named Vanya. My daughter was still a baby, not even crawling. Larisa and I talked, as mothers do. She said I have two sons. I nodded. I knew exactly what she meant. Last year, Vasily from Pulkova wrote. He sent news of Larisa’s death at 59 due to a cancer attack.

I itch to open letters brought to me in error. What discipline to scrawl Return to sender like slipping a too-small fish back in the water when all I want is to slit its belly open, devour its insides.

I imagine her as a future me – a foreign scientist, someone’s mistress with grown children. Larisa visited for two years then went home. The man then hired a younger, blonder, more Russian PhD.

Yet letters for Larisa arrive in my mail cubby. Little hostages travel blind to their final, fixed address. Every time I see her name, I feel a strange curdling, the tart surprise of knowing I can open her mail, guiltless, with no need to release it back into the great, sorted sea of post. The feeling is made raw with thoughts of her sons, now living motherless in a cold place. I browse a tea catalog addressed to her, wondering if she drank Ceylon. A card from Japan arrives in a beige, open-ended envelope with center-seams. Someone sent her a calendar for the New Year. All the rectangles for all the days – blank.

About the Judging

Exhibits are placed using the American Judging System where exhibits are ranked one against another. Awards will be made if, in the opinion of the jury, the items entered have sufficient merit. Silver, Fair Theme and Honorable Mention awards may be awarded in each class if judges so determine.

Jury selection is final. The judges’ decisions are final and cannot

be protested. Poets’ names and titles of poems in the exhibit will

be posted on the Alameda County Fair’s website on the ‘RESULTS’

page.

Each entry is restricted to one cash prize. Poets can earn multiple awards for literary merit. However, only their top 2 awards will earn a cash prize. Cash awards will be mailed after conclusion of the Fair.

Purchase Awards

The Alameda County Fair may purchase pieces from the 2018 Fine Art Exhibit. These purchases will become part of the Alameda County Fair’s Permanent Collection.
