Digital Tools for Surface EffectsTony WilsonThe ScanNcut stencil cutter is a tool that has multiple possibilities for ceramic artists looking for new techniques to create surface effects. Watch a demonstration on the capabilities of this machine and some of the applications for ceramic artists. Learn how to use the software for ScanNcut to create cut-out shapes and patterns suitable for stencilling applications. Shapes can be cut out of paper, adhesive vinyl, and craft foam, allowing ceramic artists to create low relief textures, resist patterns for wet slip application, glaze and sandblasting. In the final class, use the sandblaster to create subtle surface effects on glazed pieces.

As part of the Crafted Vancouver Festival, the Shadbolt Centre presents a demonstration and exhibition of the wood-firing process. Learn about this dramatic firing process as you watch teams of potters in action, stoking the firebox of this kiln over the course of 36 hours, gradually bringing the heat of the ceramic wares up to 2300 °F. An exhibition of work by participants can be viewed in the adjacent steam plant studio. More information at craftedVancouver.com

Modern Dance IntermediateShion Skye Carter These classes are contemporary and release-based in approach. Dancers begin with floor work to find a relationship with gravity, breath support, core support and body connectivity. Students then move through space focusing on the use of the spine and the carving of 3-dimensional space. Each class ends with expressive movement sequences that travel through space. Individuality, expressivity, and movement invention through structured improvisation is also explored in a supportive environment to live accompaniment.

Summer Ballet Amy ObregonBallet classes focus on dynamic alignment and technique in order to develop full-body integration, coordination, strength and control with an added focus is on phrasing and musicality to develop expressivity. Classes are taught in a self-disciplined yet supportive environment with live musical accompaniment.

Tap IntermediateSonja Beale Tap classes focus on rhythm tap, developing coordination and musicality to live musical accompaniment. Dancers explore the basics of tap vocabulary through a variety of tap combinations practiced in the centre and across the floor. Tap shoes required.

Intensive Technique TrainingLinda ArkelianGeared to intermediate to advanced dancers, this intensive training fuses ballet technique with contemporary movement. Each class begins with a unique ballet barre followed by centre work exploring multi-leveled, rhythmic sequences. Influenced by theatre, Linda encourages dancers to infuse movement with breath giving their dance personal meaning.

Dance Teacher IntensiveMoving in Relation: Shaping in Space Donna Redlick This one-week Dance Teacher Intensive addresses somatic-based teaching principles and concepts found in Laban/ Bartenieff Movement Studies and how they can be applied to dance within a somatic approach. The theme of this summer’s intensive is “Moving in Relation: Shaping in Space.” Students explore carving space 3-dimensionally (based on Laban’s principles) as well as shaping in relation to environment and others. The notion of kinesthetic empathy is addressed as we dance together. Students can apply or adapt the principles explored for any age group.

Summer JazzKaren Kobel Students explore a warm up, centre practice and moving through space. The focus is on developing technique, rhythm, co-ordination, and expression in a fun and supportive environment. Safe body mechanics are stressed to support strength, flexibility and endurance.
