Every day or more than 30 years, Ad-vanced Drainage Systems corrugatedhigh density polyethylene (HDPE)pipe has been building its reputation

or economy, durability, and superiorper ormance in gravity ow drainageapplications. During the 1970s and1980s, ADS single wall pipe becamethe pre erred product or agricultural, mining, tur /recreation, and residentialdrainage markets.

N-12 Pipe(4 - 60)(100-1500mm) The hydrauliccapabilities o the product were sig-nifcantly improved in 1987 when ADSintroduced the frst HDPE drainagepipe to combine an annular corrugatedexterior or strength with a smoothinterior wall or maximum ow capac-ity. Named or its excellent Manningsn rating o 0.012, N-12 pipe wasdesigned specifcally or storm sew-ers, highways, airports, and otherengineered construction. Throughextensive feld and university testing,ADS engineers were able to refne the

corrugated wall design or larger diam-eters without compromising the pipesexcellent strength-to-weight ratio. Itsper ormance and economy have ledto rapid acceptance by contractorsand engineers, and o fcial approval bystate and municipal agencies.

Revolutionary joiningtechnologyYears o research and testing haveproduced soil-tight and water-tightsystems providing unsurpassed jointintegrity, with built-in bell joints and astpush-together installation. Soil-tight

joint. N-12 ST IB pipe, delivered withan integral bell and spigot joint, meetsthe most stringent soil-tight require-ments. The bell design resists distor-tion, chipping or cracking, and spansthree corrugations, exceeding AAS-HTO M294 recommendations. The in-line bell design eliminates the need todig bell holes in the trench. Joints aresealed by a actory-installed rubbergasket that meets all requirements oASTM F477. Water-tight joint. Incorpo-

rating patented technology developedin the aerospace industry, N-12 WTIB pipe adds two important eaturesto the N-12 soil-tight pipe design. Thesealing area o the bell is rein orcedwith a proprietary 2 (50mm)ceramic/ polymer composite collar which im-proves the joints integrity and dimen-sioinal control. Secondly, a proprietarygasket designed to maximize sealingre erence and meeting ASTM F477, is

actory installed into the spigot. The re-sult is a design that meets or exceedsASTM D3212 lab test and ASTMF1417 water-tight feld test require-ments, and flls an essential role incomplying with the stricter demands onew EPA water quality guidelines.

ApplicationsN-12 pipe meets the requirements orType S pipe under AASHTO M 252and M 294. This product can be speci-fed or culverts, cross drains, stormsewers, landflls, and other public andprivate construction.

Gone are the days when plastic pipewas specifed only or cost reasons.Advances in polymer science and

structural design have created aproduct that has actually outper ormedand outlasted concrete and metal pipewhile maintaining its cost advantage.By any measure, ADS N-12 pipecompares avorably to conventionalmaterials.

Structural StrengthAs a exible conduit, HDPE pipe with-stands vertical pressure by trans erringmost o the load to the surroundingsoil. N-12 pipe will support H-25 liveloads with 12 minimum cover* andE-80 loads under 24 cover. Maximumcover will vary with design conditions, but can usually be specifed up to 60

eet. In controlled tests, N-12 has per-ormed well at fll heights o more than

    100 eet. * 60 pipe requires 2 cover orH-25 loads.

DurabilityHigh density polyethylene is an ex-tremely tough material that can easilywithstand the normal impacts involvedin shipping and installation. It is highlyresistant to chemical attack and isuna ected by soils or e uents with pHranges rom 1.5 to 14. HDPEs ductil-ity and molecular structure result inexcellent resistance to abrasion. Poly-ethylene pipe shows less than 20% othe material loss o concrete pipe inabrasive environments, and is o tenspecifed or harsh mine slurries andas a slip liner or deteriorated culverts.

Hydraulic efficiencyThe smooth interior o N-12 pipe

provides superior ow characteristics.Tests on various sizes o N-12 pipeshow Mannings n values ranging

rom 0.010 to 0.013. (It should benoted that n values tend to increasewith slower velocities and larger pipesizes.) The chart below indicates thatthe values or N-12 pipe are basicallythe same as those yielded on previoustests o rein orced concrete pipe. On

the other hand, the n ratings or cor-rugated metal pipe are considerablyhigher, and are predicated on the pipe

running ull to develop the spiral ow.Light weightHDPE pipe is up to 30 times lighterthan concrete pipe, making it ar easierto transport and handle. On-site laborand equipment requirements are re-duced, with a corresponding reductionin the potential risk o injury.

Fast installationLong 6m (19 8) lengths mean ewer

joints. (N-12 pipe is also available in

13 t. lengths or smaller trench boxes.)Soil-tight or water-tight connectionsare quick and easy with integral gas-keted bell and spigot joints. The pipecuts easily and does not need to bebeveled or joining. In typical trenchdepths o 6 to 10 eet, contractorsreport installation rates ranging rom1,200 eet per day o 15-24 pipe tomore than 400 eet per day o 60 pipe.

The material cost o HDPE is ex-tremely competitive with concrete andcorrugated metal. When installation

costs are actored in, the savings startto multiply.

Polyethylenes light weight cuts ship -ping charges. More lengths o pipe pertruck means ewer delivery loads. Fewer people are needed for on-site unloading and handling. Heavyequipment requirements are reduced. Long lengths are easy to handle andrequire ewer joints. A recent survey ostate Departments o Transportationrevealed that reductions in installed

cost or HDPE pipe were 12 to 38percent compared to concrete, and 5to 28 percent vs. corrugated steel.

A choice of joining systems1. Integral bell-and-spigot joints. N-12ST IB and N-12 WT IB pipe (see page2) are engineered or ast installationo long straight sewer lines that requiresoil-tight or water-tight joint per or-mance.2. Hinged split couplers and abricated

fttings provide cost e ective connec-tions or normal drainage installations.ADS can abricate virtually any ftting

as long as it meets engineering stan-dards.3. Injection molded HDPE couplersare available on fttings and repaircouplers to meet specifc joint per-

ormance requirements and provideinstallation savings. Just align the pipeor ftting sections, lubricate the belland spigot, and push together.4. Small diameter injection moldedfttings. A complete line o fttingsincluding tees, wyes, elbows, couplersand reducers are available in 4-12

(100-300mm) diameters or both soiltight and water tight applications.5. Series 35 thermo-molded PVCsanitary fttings meet the 10.8 psi pres-sure testing requirements o ASTMD 3212. Selection includes couplers, tees, wyes, elbows, caps and adap-tors, each ftted with a rubber gasket. The fttings connect not only corrugat-ed HDPE pipe, but also PVC, concreteand other materials.

Installation recommendationsProper installation is perhaps themajor determinent o long-term per or-

mance o any drainage pipe, and thebasic procedures and precautions orcorrugated polyethylene pipe are in

act quite similar to those or concreteand metal pipe. N-12 pipe is a exibleconduit which trans ers live and deadloads to the surrounding soil. Particularcare is there ore required in bedding, backflling and compaction, and in theselection o backfll material.Class I, II,or III soils may be used or backfll, andshould be compacted to at least 90%Standard Proctor Density. Instructions

or underground installation o plasticdrainage pipe are contained in ASTMD 2321. AASHTO Section 30 is rec-ommended or highway applications.Specifc instructions or N-12 pipe aredetailed in ADS Product Note 3.115,Installing N-12 Storm, SanitarySewer and Culvert Pipe.
