The Season of LENT LENT begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14. Christians have observed this season of the Church Year since the fourth century. Its traditionally a time of reflection, penitence and spiritual renewal before Easter. During Lent, some Christians give up something that hinders their relationship with God. The Season of LENT LENT begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14. Christians have observed this season of the Church Year since the fourth century. It’s traditionally a time of reflection, penitence and spiritual renewal before Easter. During Lent, some Christians give up something that hinders their relationship with God. Others do something extra for their spiritual growth or make a special sacrifice. The key is to make Lent a memorable season of sincere spiritual growth — a time that can set the tone for the rest of the year. Join us for worship on Ash Wednesday, February 14

at 6:15 PM as we begin our Lenten journey.

ASH WEDNESDAY PRAYER

Merciful God, you called us forth from the dust of the earth; you claimed us for Christ in the waters of baptism. Look upon us as we enter these Forty Days bearing the mark of ashes, and bless our journey through the desert of Lent to the font of rebirth. May our fasting be hunger for justice; our alms, a making of peace; our prayer, the chant of humble and grateful hearts. Amen.

Here are some of the items discussed at the JANUARY Church Council meeting:

There was discussion about using the church facility for special parties. When you use the space for your own party, you are responsible to clean up after yourself and take out the garbage (including in the restrooms). You also need to bring your own kitchen supplies.

Men’s Breakfast Bible Study moved to the third Saturday in February because of the event “Together in Mission” at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. This event is February 10, and Adoration people can register online at the Synod website. The cost is $10.

On February 27, the Church Council will be serving dinner to our homeless neighbors at Divine Intervention.

Ash Wednesday is February 14. Lenten midweek services will start February 21.

Sharon Anderson presented the financial report, Sean McGinty moved to accept the report, Sandy Eigner seconded the motion, motion carried.

Matthew Nichols will be donating the Knox box for the church and will be ordering it soon.

The cookie/bake sale raised $1,386. $346.50 was sent to Lutheran Social Services and the remainder went into the church operating fund. The rummage sale is scheduled for June 7-9, 2018.

Jim & Wendy Haas will not be doing the Adopt-A-Highway this year. If anyone is interested in taking over this task, they can contact Jim.

Larry Markiewicz reported the Christmas rummage generated over $1,100 for Mulala’s scholarship program. $120 will go to the Diocese Professional Education Fund.

Sean McGinty will do a temple talk on R.I.C. Sunday.

The Council will help the youth with a Spaghetti dinner (TBA) to help them raise money for their trip. Sandy has sent in the full balance for the conference in Texas. Four will be attending: two youth and two adults.

Tania Voigt stated another $2,000 in pledges were given, bringing the total received to 64 pledges.

Last month $750 dollars was approved by the council to buy new black chairs, someone also donated $1,000 dollars to be used to buy more chairs. We have approximately 140 new chairs. With these new chairs, we have 50 old folding chairs we would like to donate or ask if any congregational member would like any of these chairs. If no congregational members have any interest in the chairs, they will be donated to a new start-up church.

For more information on any or all of these items, please check the complete Council minutes

posted on the kiosk in the Gathering Space or contact one of your Council representatives.

SUNDAYS IN FEBRUARY

FEBRUARY 4

PRAISE WORSHIP SERVICE Come and Praise the Lord with joyful songs! Our instrument ensemble members will provide special music to enhance our worship service. Invite a friend to church to share this musical Sunday morning.

“SOUPER” BOWL SUNDAY In an effort to help support the Ascension Food Ministry, we are asking members to bring in cans of soup, canned goods and other non-perishable items to help replenish the food pantry. Monetary donations will also be accepted to help this worthwhile effort.

FEBRUARY 11

LOVINGKINDESS SUNDAY Congregational members are asked to go out into the community and perform random acts of lovingkindness. This is a way to give back to our community and promote Adoration Lutheran Church with our invitation cards.

LENTEN DEVOTIONS “Hope For Our Times”

In keeping with the Outreach for Hope vision, “that strong, vibrant ministries will be centers of HOPE in the midst of every community challenged by poverty within the Greater Milwaukee Synod,” they are providing 40 devotions that both acknowledge some of our current challenges, while pointing out where we can see hope. Their intention is to offer hope by reflecting on the good we can, and are accomplishing through God’s grace. Daily devotions are available on the Outreach of Hope website: Outreachforhope.org. You can also sign up on the website to receive the devotions emailed directly to you.

SOUTHWEST INTERFAITH

SW Neighborhood Outreach Program is a non-profit organization for older adults over the age of 60. Their mission is to link older adults with a caring community. Volunteers provide, at no charge, rides to doctor appointments, shopping, and other transportation needs. Other services include minor household repairs and assistance with bills and paperwork. Although there is no charge for these services, individual donations play an integral part in running the program.

You can help support this outreach program by donating $5.00 and you will receive a Boston Store coupon book with 500.00 in coupons. Use your coupons starting March 1. See Judy Goodwin or Betty Wing, our SWI Representatives if you are interested in looking at or purchasing a coupon book.

SWI Board Member Needed - Judy Goodwin is looking for a partner to share Adoration’s volunteer board membership. The person does not have to presently be a volunteer for SWI. Duties include possibly attending up to 10 meetings a year and participating in various other activities supporting SWI. If your passion includes helping older adults to stay independent, this is an opportunity to realize that strength. See or call Judy Goodwin at 414-281-9368.

BENEFITS OF VOLUNTEERING

Research shows that volunteering leads to better health and volunteers are the most likely to receive physical and mental health benefits from their volunteer activities.

It gives you the ability to learn and develop skills that you might not normally get the chance to experience.

Builds self-esteem and self-confidence.

Allows you to meet new people. We have many great opportunities to volunteer your time and talent right here at Adoration. Here are a few suggestions:

Serve on a committee

Volunteer as a worship assistant

Participate in spring and fall clean-up of the church building and grounds

Help with maintaining of the church grounds, (lawn mowing, snow shoveling)

Get involved with VBS, the church picnic, the rummage sale, book sale, bake cookies for our cookie sale...

Help in the church office, help with bulk mailings, recycling...

Whatever your passion, however you get involved, volunteering offers a way to have a real and lasting impact!

YOU can make a Difference!

MERU & MULALA ~ Our Partners in Ministry

Welcome Pastor Neema Akyoo

Rev. Neema Akyoo is the new pastor for Mulala Parish. She is married to Rev. Elilia Abel Seleu Sarakikya, former pastor of Kikatiti and one of the members of the 2016 delegation to the U.S. He is currently furthering his theological studies at Makumira University. They have five children: daughters, Mercy, 16 years; Sofia, 14 years; and Agape, 10 years. They also have 12 year old twin sons, Ferdnand and Fredrick.

Rev. Neema was an Evangelist at Mulala’s sub parish, Kyuta, from 2006-2007. She also served as an Evangelist for Nkoaranga Parish (2002-2005), Sura Parish (2008-2009) and Poli Parish (2010-2011). In 2012, she attended pastoral theological education at Mwika Bible School and graduated in 2015. Her first call was to Usa River Parish from 2015-2017, and she is now serving Mulala.

Rev. Neema was excited to learn of the strong partnership between Mulala and Adoration Church. She said the people of Mulala will continue to lift us up in prayer and that they look forward to the day, with God’s blessing, that we may greet one another in person.
