Adopt a Pet Math Project Description: Students will apply their 4th grade math skills when solving real world problems. Task Directions: Use the materials attached, to answer the questions about the costs associated with adopting and caring for a pet. Knowing the costs associated with the pets will help you choose which pet or pets you can adopt. You may use scratch paper, print out the packet, pick up a packet from school, or you can create a poster/brochure to complete the tasks. Be as creative as you want. Here are the pets that can be adopted, along with their weight.

Adopt a Pet Math Project Description: Students will apply their 4th grade math skills when solving real world problems.

Task Directions: Use the materials attached, to answer the questions about the costs associated with adopting and caring for a pet. Knowing the costs associated with the pets will help you choose which pet or pets you can adopt. Monday-Calculate the Annual Cost of each pet. The Adoption Facility can break up your adoption fee in to 12 monthly payments. Use the chart to calculate the costs per year for each animal. Then find the total annual costs of all the animals.

Tuesday - Choose 4 different pets you want to adopt and list them on the lines.. Decide how many the items you will need to purchase and fill out the table. Then you will need to calculate the cost to buying the supplies in the next chart. You need to make sure you’re deciding for 4 pets of your choice. Hint: Look back on page 1 to find the weight of the animals.

Right Now Enrich: Calculate the tax amount by multiplying the total amount by 10% (hint: multiply the total by 0.10 or 1/10).

Wednesday - Use the Feeding & Training Chart to answer the following questions.

1. How much attention would a dog need per day? 2. How much attention would a cat need per day? 3. How much attention would a dog need per week? 4. How much attention would a cat need per week? 5. How much attention would a dog, cat and rabbit need per week?

Enrich: What is the total annual amount of attention a cat and dog would need?

Thursday - Use the Feeding & Training Chart to answer the following questions.

1. If you walked and trained the dog at 7:40am, then trained the cat, what time would it be when you finished?

2. If you began cleaning the hedgehog cage at 4:12pm, then the rabbit cage, then the parrot cage, the cat box and the fishbowl, what time would it be when you finished?

3. If you started training each of the animals at 9:22am, what time would it be when you finished training all of the animals?

4. How much time would you spend caring for a fish and a mouse in a week? 5. How much time would you spend caring for a rabbit, parrot, and cat in a week?
