This book was literally years in the making.

Lightroom has improved significantly since its inception. I started using

Lightroom 1.0 to catalog photographs, make an occasional web page, and

rarely used the Develop Module. Photoshop was my go-to software for

image enhancement and resizing. Today, I use Photoshop for retouching

and compositing beyond Lightroom’s capabilities.

Beginning with Lightroom 5, I resized, adjusted, and exported most

images within Lightroom. The time savings alone is incalculable. I can create

unlimited virtual copies and apply different develop settings to each copy for

an unlimited variety of choices.

Thank you Adobe for Lightroom and Photoshop.

No book of this type is possible without models to illustrate how the

presets affect images. While most presets can be applied to many types of

photography, this book concentrates on portrait photography and how

presets alter portraits of people.

It was a joy working with the models featured in this book. I greatly

appreciate their time and.

The principal models are coincidentally named Sara, Sarah, and Sara.

Preface

Abode Lightroom comes with hundreds of free Develop Module presets

to quickly enhance your photographs. With one click, you can convert a

photograph to Black & White, soften a portrait, add split toning, and much

more. Plus each preset can be adjusted and saved as a User Preset.

With so many presets available, some free and others for a small cost,

you can have an e xtensive library of presets, use a preset you like, and six

months or a year later not remember which preset you used or where it is

located. The history panel may provide the preset name, but it does not tell

which folder contains the preset. Free presets from Adobe and onOne (on1)

are contained on more than 20 folders. You can also spend a lot of v aluable

time trying different presets in different folders until you find one you have

used before or is appropriate for your photograph.

This books is a quick reference guide with over 350 photographs covering

more than 300 free presets in 22 folders available at no c ost from Adobe and

onOne Software. It is designed to save you hours of time by showing you

how each preset affects a photograph.

Each chapter features a group of presets like Lightroom B&W Filter.

Within each group, there is a photography with no p reset and the same

photo with each preset within the group applied to quickly judge how the

preset affects the photo. Since some groups have dozens of presets there is

always a photo without the presets conveniently placed on a page so you can

quickly compare before and after without having to page back and forth.

Use presets to enhance portraits, products, landscapes, and many other

types of photography and artworks. Most of the presets in this book are

applied to portraits. When a preset is more appropriate for a landscape

photo, a landscape photo was used. Within a group of presets, you may find

both portraits and landscapes.

Limitations in print color reproduction and c omputer and t ablet monitor

quality may not give you exactly the same results shown in this book, but

you can j udge relative variations between presets. All photographs in this

book were edited using a calibrated monitor.

Introduction

What Is A Lightroom Develop Module Preset?

Presets in Lightroom’s Develop Module are located in the left panel. They maintain

specific develop module settings (exposure, hue, saturation, color, grain, etc.) for

future use similar to Photoshop’s actions.

Want to add a spotlight? There are presets for that. Want to desaturate and add

grain? There’s a preset for that. Want to convert a color photograph to sepia toned?

There are presets for that. And, they are all free.

When you first install Lightroom or upgrade to a new version, there may

be few if any installed presets. Adding and using Adobe’s Lightroom presets is a

personal preference. Some presets can save hours of time while others are of little

or no value depending on your style of photography.

In addition to free presets available from Abode, onOne Software also provides

groups of free presets for y ou to download and install. Again, some are useful and

others are not. Some onOne presets work with current version of Lightroom and

others with prior versions. That’s life in the technology age.

How To Use Presets

In Photoshop, you can record or install actions that perform a particular function.

For example, converting a color photograph to B&W or toned B&W. The action

saves repeating the steps every time you want to apply an e ffect to a photograph.

Unlike Photoshop actions, that can open a file, apply changes, resize, and save the

file, Lightroom develop module presets only effect the appearance of your photo

and not export image size or file type. Presets for that are in the Library Module.

One issue with Lightroom presets is the ease of accumulating 100s of free preset

and then not knowing where to find it months or years later. Another, is the time

you can spend previewing dozens of presets to determine if any are a ppropriate for

y ou r a pp li ca ti on .

Nothing is more frustrating than creating a WOW photo using a preset and then

not knowing where it is. I know. I’ve been there. The Develop Module history panel

provides the preset name, but not it’s folder name. Perhaps, someday Adobe will

correct that short-coming.

How To Use This Book

This book includes over 300 free Adobe and onOne presets available for Lightroom

CC.

Presets are listed alphabetically in folder order in the left panel of the Develop

Module, and all presets within a folder are l isted alphabetically by the p reset name.

Each group of presets in this book begins with a photo with no p reset applied

followed by a series of photos with the preset.

Several folders have dozens of presets. To save time, the photo with no preset is

included on multiple pages so reduce search time to view the difference between the

original photo and the same photo with the preset applied. In just a few seconds, or

minutes, you can review how a preset affects a photo and if it is appropriate for your

application.

Reproduction Limitations

While ever y effort went into reproducing each preset as accurately as possible, there

are several factors that affect how a preset in this book looks on y our monitor or

printer.

Monitor calibration is crucial to reproduce accurate color. With that said, there

is a significant difference between an image on a back-lit monitor and an image on a

page viewed with reflected light. So w hat you see in this ebook may not be identical

to what you will see on your monitor, tablet, or smartphone. Some presets apply

ver y subtle changes that will not be as apparent when viewed in this book verses

when viewed on your monitor or screen.

If you have never calibrated your computer monitor, I highly recommend

you make the small investment in a reliable calibration tool like Datacolor’s

Spyder5EXPRESS or X-Rite’s ColorMunki Display. I calibrate my m onitors using

the ColorMunki Display and cameras using X-Rites Colorchecker Passport. The

before and after comparisons between an uncalibrated and calibrated monitor can

b e s i gn i fi c an t .

Every Preset Is Adjustable

If you are satisfied how your photo looks after applying a preset –fantastic, you are

done.

Presets are n ot cast in concrete. Each preset applies specific develop settings

found in the right panel area. If a preset doesn’t quite have the look or feel you want,

you can change it. In the f ollowing example, the M onochrome Fine Grain preset was

applied to a color photo. Figure 1 shows the slider settings for the original photo and

Figure 2 the slider settings with the preset applied.

Unless you are a power user, there is no n eed to calibrated your monitor weekly

or monthly. Monitor color will vary over time, but today’s LED displays are m ore

consistent and reliable compared to cathode ray tube monitors for most applications.

When applying this preset, the photograph was converted from color to B&W

and the HSL/Color/B&W panel sliders show the B&W settings applied to achieve

this affect. All s liders are adjustable to refine the affect to your satisfaction. When

you find a combination you would like to apply to other photographs, you can save

the s ettings as a user preset. Go to Develop – New Preset (Shift-Command-N, Shift-

Control-N). You will get t he New Develop Preset Dialog box.

Name the preset and save it to the user preset folder or c reate a new folder.

You can customize any Lightroom preset and create new presets based on existing

presets.

The creative possibilities using Lightroom presets is limited only by your

imagination.
