Adobe InDesign Tools Panel

Tools PanelDisplayed by default at the left side of your screen. Include tools for selecting, editing and creating elements in the page. Other tools are used to select type, shape, lines and gradients.

Tools PanelYou can display the tools panel in two columns by clicking the double arrow on top of the title bar.

You can also hide and display the tools panel from the Menu Bar by clicking Windows and un-check Tools.

Tools PanelA tool is activated by simply clicking on it from the tools panel, aside from the visible tool, a tool may contain several other related tools hidden behind the visible tool which indicated by a small arrow at the lower right corner of the tool icon.

Different InDesign Tools

Selection Tool


Selects point or path segments within objects.

Direct Selection Tool


Controls gap/s between a selection of objects.

Gap Tool


Allows you to create and edit or format the text or Type that you use on your document.

Type Tool


Draws individual straight line segment.

Contains different drawing tools functions.

Pen Tool


Draws figures or images just like a pen on paper.

Pencil Tool


Draw square and rectangle placeholder.

Rectangle Frame Tool


Draw squares and rectangle, circles and ellipsis and polygons and freeform shape.

Rectangle Tool


This tool cuts or splits paths and frames.

Scissor Tool


Scales, rotates, skews or shear a selection.

Free Transform Tool


Adjust the start and end gradient in an object.

Gradient Swatch Tool


Lets you fade an object into the background.

Gradient Feather Tool


Writes down notes on this tool.

Note Tool


Samples color or attribute of an object and apply them to other objects.

Eyedropper Tool


Move the page view or the document window.

Hand Tool


Increases and decreases the view of the document.

Zoom Tool


Fills colors on an object. Stroke sets color to paths or contours of objects.

Fill/Stroke Tool


Color/None will be applied to the selected object.

Apply Color/none Tool


View mode you can choose which one to use.

View Tool
