originally used by the automotive industry, but today they are most often found in magazines, newspapers and ads.

Mazarrón...Mazarrón is a municipality in the province of Murcia
in South Eastern Spain. The municipality covers an
area of 318.7 square kilometres and has a
population of around 35,000. The area is listed in
the Top 10 of areas of Spain inhabited by the most
British Ex Patriates. The municipality is made up of
several towns and urbanisations including Puerto
De Mazarron, Isla Plana, Bolnuevo, Urbanisations
Camposol and Country Club and of course
Mazarron Town itself.
The Bay of Mazarrón is sheltered by the last
foothills of the Sierra de la Almenara, a mining area
since the Carthaginian era and has over 35 km of
beaches, unspoiled coves and rocky sea beds.
Mazarrón Town is a charming, traditional Spanish
town which over the last few years has seen
considerable economic growth and development.
Many of the old buildings have been restored to
their former glory and many new shops and
businesses open every month. Mazarrón has
always been a mining town, even in Roman times
and although today the mines are closed you can
still see the remains of the old mines, and walk
amongst them on the hillsides.
The traditional weekly market is held every
Saturday market in the main town square and there
is also an indoor market which is open every day
except Sunday.

considering it is a major purchase, the decision of purchasing a new mattress is not one to be taken lightly. Here are some of the things you might want to think about…
Firstly, do you need to change your mattress? We are advised to change our mattress every 5 – 7 years but you are the best judge as to when the mattress should be changed within this time frame. What is the condition and comfort like on the mattress? When changing your bed sheets, take a moment each time to have a look at the mattress and its condition.
Lifestyle changes can accelerate the need to change a mattress. Has something changed? For example, do you read more and sit up in bed? Whilst sleeping are you moving about a lot more? Is there one of you or two of you in the bed now? Have sleeping patterns changed? You need to try and think about all aspects, whilst making the decision to buy a new mattress.
Our bodies naturally change over time, whether that be due to weight gain or loss, even pregnancy. It all adds different types of stress onto the mattress, including kids jumping about on the bed! A good indicator as to when you may need a new mattress is back pain or a tingle in the arms. Even if you do not have any of these early warning signs, ask yourself when you wake up in the morning, are you really having a good nights sleep?
You spend more time on your bed than any other piece of furniture in the home! Therefore, the characteristics of the different mattresses need to be explained to you so you can make an informed decision. But knowing all the
technicalities is not the same as the 'test drive'!
First, you need to lie down on several different models in various positions, but especially the one you usually sleep in – and partners should try mattresses together! Good retailers will be happy for you to do this.

Puerto De Mazarron is a beautiful Mediterranean
coastal resort in the municipality of Mazarron.
For many years the resort has been a holiday
destination for the Spanish with several kilometres
of unspoilt beaches which stretch from the crystal
blue waters of La Azhoia through to the naturally
formed sculptures of Bolnuevo.
Despite it´s typical Mediterranean climate with
cool sea breezes in summer and protection by
surrounding mountains against the cold North
winds in winter, Puerto de Mazarron has until very
recently been largely undiscovered by the British.
There has been considerable investment in the
development and modernisation of the new Marina
and Paseo in recent years which has encouraged a
rise in the number of international contemporary
style bars and restaurants but the resort has
remained typically Spanish and you won´t find a
KFC or Burger King for miles.

One of the main problems people face when
dealing with legal matters in Spain is that they
assume that it is the same as in their native
country.
The system here is very different than in the UK
and so whether buying a house, writing a
Spanish Will or dealing with financial affairs it is
extremely important to make sure that you
engage the services of independent, reputable
and established Legal Advisors.
When purchasing property for example, a lot of
people think they MUST have a lawyer but this is
in fact a myth as it is not obligatory in Spain. All
legal documents are signed before a Notary
and it is they who ensure that all documents
provided are legal. But they must also be sure
that you understand what you are doing hence
the need for a Translator. It is always
recommended that you use someone who has
a well-established office that you can call into,
someone who has good local knowledge and
can offer a personal continuous service well
after a transaction is completed. In particular if
you have bought a holiday home if you have a
problem it is nice to know that help is at hand at
the end of a telephone or by email.
Legal Representatives can usually also give
advice on wide range of legal issues and many
can draft important legal documents such as
Spanish Wills. Though it maybe something we
prefer not to think about, the system in Spain
differs greatly from that in the UK and making

Urbanisation Camposol is a large residential
development of around 5000 properties
located approximately 20 km inland, in the
municipality of Mazarron. Situated in a broad
river valley surrounded by mountains, it is
predominately occupied by British Ex Patriates
and holiday home owners although there is
a lso a good mix o f o ther European
nationalities.
The Urbanisation is very well serviced by local
businesses with a large onsite Consum
Supermarket, a petrol station, post office, and
ample shops, bars and restaurants. It also
boasts a recently improved 18 hole Golf
Course and refurbished Clubhouse.
There are all types of businesses from Property
Sales, Pool Services to Decorators as well as a
large number of charitable organisations and
social groups. Many of the venues offer live
music and entertainment throughout the year
and there are a good number of community
events. The urbanisation has an active
Residents´ Committee and even has its own
designated council run social centre and
market which is held on Sector A every
Thursday.

Zaén & Bajil Caves
The region of Zaén and Bajil is just under 2 hours
away from San Javier airport. It can be reached via
the village of El Sabinar and is a beautiful place to
visit for a day trip. The area is steeped in history as
the landscape was created 20 million years ago, and
is an impressive area of natural beauty. While
walking around you will be able to see the ancient
cliffs - rocks formed by millions of shells of marine
animals, diverse plants and trees as well as the Holm
Oak forest. This area is also home to many species
of birds including nightingales, warblers, wrens and
robins. The panoramic views are impressive so don't
forget to take your camera. The Bajil Chapparal is
nearly 1400 metres above sea level and before reaching the summit you will find the Bagil dolmen. Close
by there is a wonderful cave painting of a boat. To see more paintings head to El Calar de la Santa where
you will find the Cañaica del Calar and Fuente del Sabuco sites. For lunch you could head
to the pretty village of Moratalla then visit the Castle of military-gothic style which dates
from the 15th century.

The Urbanisation of Condado de Alhama is a
delightful landscaped development, in the
municipality of Alhama de Murcia, and only about
15 minutes´ drive from the beautiful beaches of
Mazarron and the historical town of Alhama. It
consists of around 3000 properties built in a secure
environment surrounding an 18 hole Jack Nicklaus
designed Golf Course and is a combination of
residential properties and holiday homes
occupied by a mix of nationalities.
There are several bars, restaurants, shops and
businesses based within the complex which
operate all year round, many of which are located
within the impressive arabesque style Al Kasar
Commercial Centre.
But it is in the warmer months from April to October
when the place really comes alive...
Tourists mingle with residents and holiday home
owners and there is a lively buzz throughout the
area. The complex boasts a host of sports facilities
and even has its own Annual Spanish Style Fiesta
and Summertime Saturday Evening Market.

entertainment and who regularly host events for

th th13 to the 20 of April - Holy week ́ Semana Santa´
Spain is renowned for its Semana Santa traditions
and most villages and towns will be celebrating
with processions, fiestas, fireworks and events
going on throughout the week.
You will notice that the processions feature people
wearing the Nazareno robe (see our front cover)
This consists of a tunic, a cloak and a “capriote”, a
conical shaped hood which conceals the face of
the wearer. The colours of these robes vary
depending on the procession. In the medieval
period these robes and hoods were used by
penitents who were able to demonstrate without
revealing their identity. In modern times the sight
of these robes may cause dismay due to their
being appropriated & worn by racist groups - so
it’s good to know their true meaning is the exact
opposite - piety & humility...
Those involved in the Easter processions are from
Christian brotherhoods associations whose
origins date back to the middle ages. They will
carry the sculptures or oats that show different
scenes from the gospels related to the passion of
Christ throughout the processions.

As a public holiday this day commemorates the
last supper of Christ & there will be solemn
processions throughout towns and villages.
th18 April is also a public holiday, as this day marks
Christ’s crucifixion & death. Special church
services will be held and processions will be
underway in the evening
th20 April - Easter Sunday
Marks the resurrection of Christ. On this day the
Godfather of a child will present them with a cake
known as ´La Mona´, a pan shape adorned with
characters. Celebrations will be happening but
will be less solemn than those during the week.
During the Easter period in Spain, people will be
eating ‘Torrijas’, thick slices of bread soaked in
milk and beaten egg, fried in olive oil and served
with honey or sugar. Also popular is ‘Un Pestino’,
a plain and simple fritter fried in olive oil and again
sprinkled with honey or sugar.

“Is it safe to drink the water in Spain?”
The short answer is generally “Yes”, though in reality you would probably prefer not to.
In general terms in most urban areas of Spain it is perfectly acceptable to drink the water from the tap; however the quality can vary from good to very poor and this inconsistency means that most people in Spain prefer to drink bottled water.
When comparing the tap water in Spain to that in the UK, the main difference that people notice is the discolouration and the unpleasant taste and odour. This is mainly due to the different, often higher levels of chemicals introduced into the Spanish water supply particularly chlorine. Whilst boiling water will kill bacteria, it will not remove the chemical impurities.
Chlorine is important as it kills harmful bacteria associated with serious disease but research has shown that as well as the unpleasant taste, there are considerable health risks associated with consumption of excessive chlorine. In Spain, chlorine can only be removed from the water at the point of use ie immediately before it comes out of the tap!
One of the other main problems with the water in Spain is that it is very hard, with high concentrations of calcium and magnesium. Consequently you will find that limescale builds
up quickly and it can have a severely damaging effect on pipes, water boilers and domestic appliances such as kettles, irons, washing machine and dishwashers. Heating costs are increased and the lifespan of appliances is significantly reduced.
So what’s the solution?
The solution depends on your particular problem but without doubt one of the most simple and cost effective options is to install a water filtration system.
