ABU Dhabi has a raft of ambitious plans to meet the growing domestic gap between energy supply and demand all based on gas. ADNOCs newly formed Gas Directorate, headed up by Mohammed Sahoo Al Suwaidi, comprises three divisions which together cover all of the gas sector.

Speaking exclusively to the ADIPEC Show Daily, Al Suwaidi described the Directorates plans to focus on gas being the main source of energy currently and in the near and long term future, as part of the overall energy portfolio of Abu Dhabi and the UAE.

Suwaidi: Gas future

industrial growth; if you look at ADNOCs own usage of gas as fuel gas and in re-injection; the gap over the next ten years could grow to between half a billion and two billion scf per day. Lets not forget that ADNOC exports gas to Dubai and as LNG to Japan. If you consider all this, the region will certainly see a gas shortage. But the gas directorate is taking bold steps to address the shortage before it becomes a problem. GASCOs Integrated Gas Development (IGD) project is aimed at adding new onshore and offshore gas processing facilities at Habshan and Ruwais in Abu Dhabi. The IGD project will process gas from the Umm Shaif field at Habshan and Ruwais. The project is expected to be completed by 2013, and deliver natural gas by September 2013. Al Hosn Gas is behind a scheme to introduce gas from the Shah sour gas field by the end of 2014, in a joint venture with Oxy valued at US$10billion, while Elixir, ADNOC gas directorates JV with industrial gases company Linde started producing nitrogen in June 2011;

since then 300m scf have been sent to Habshan, and mixed with methane for injection into the condensate reservoir freeing up the same amount of gas to the network. With all of these projects, we aim to bridge the gap between supply and demand, said the director of the gas directorate. ADNOC is exploring the possibility of enhancing gas production from current gas reservoirs and gas cap oil fields. It is planning to launch development of technically difficult and challenging undeveloped gas reservoirs onshore and offshores in Abu Dhabi to narrow the gas shortage. As the incoming conference chairman for next years ADIPEC, which will have a strong gas focus, Al Suwaidi sees his role as ensuring the sharing of information, enabling those who attend ADIPEC 2013 to gain insight into ADNOCs technology leadership, its environmental stewardship, and its benchmark best practices. The future is gas, he concluded.

Investment and diversification are essential to improve energy efficiency and accelerate decarbonisation, a leading British politician said at ADIPEC yesterday.

Alan Duncan, Minister for International Development and head of the UK delegation to ADIPEC, said Britain believed such innovation

can have huge benefits, including nations such as the UAE where oil and gas are prolific.

We welcomed the opportunity to press home this message when we hosted the third Clean Energy Ministerial in April this year, said Duncan.

And there are already excellent examples of UK and UAE partnerships in the energy sector our

work together on Masdar, the investment in the London Array offshore wind project and via IRENA are examples of our close co-operation.

Addressing a gathering of VIPs at the Middle East Petroleum Club at ADIPEC, Duncan said such co-operation had helped the industry develop.

Our message to the world is that the UK has many years experience in how to produce oil and gas in technically challenging environments. UK companies are at the forefront of innovative, technical advances in the industry such as enhanced oil recovery and sub-sea developments.

The world will continue to rely on hydrocarbons for the foreseeable future but how that role evolves will define the fortunes of the region. Now is the time to be asking and answering these questions.

Duncan said it was necessary to invest in

natural resources and new sources of technology to promote cleaner, more efficient sources of energy. This allows a more diverse and sustainable approach to power future economies.

It was vital that both energy producers and consumers worked together to ensure their energy priorities are met through a transparent global market and stable energy prices, according to Duncan.

He urged looking to the future by intensifying efforts to bring new energy partners into the future energy framework.

Iraq, for example, has vast gas reserves and the greatest potential for increasing conventional oil production of any oil-producing country.

To this end, the UK supports projects such as the Southern Corridor pipeline that will transport gas from the Caspian region into Europe, potentially boosting Iraqs ability to become a major gas producer and exporter in the longer term.

Rebuilding opportunityIraq experts give their viewpoints on the road ahead

Iraq Energy City a new living modelIraq Energy City (IEC), just outside the countrys main oil port, Basra, built by Petronor, is an oilfield supply base created with the support of the Iraq Ministry of Oil to build and operate oilfield supply bases in Iraq. In February 2009, Petronor signed a contract with South Oil Company for the first base, a 300,000 square meters site.

The base includes include offices, workshops and storage yards for long-term rent or lease. A compound with housing includes recreational facilities, utilities and communications. The objective is to create a safe, clean

and efficient working environment for the oil industry in Iraq.

The base will cater to local oil industry needs and is open for both oil companies and oilfield service providers and their subcontractors.

Peter Day, CEO of project developer, Petronor Group, explained the city offers high levels of company accommodation. Today it accommodates 400 people, with 1500 envisaged for 2013.

Phase one is complete with the basic amenities to live, work and play, he said. Phase two involves building a US$1 million sports centre, and phase three community services, schools and retail areas.Show visitors flocked

to hear oil and gas professionals working in the burgeoning and booming Iraq market describe the challenges and opportunities in what many describe as the regions most exciting market.

The fascinating event was one of four special ADIPEC Middle East country briefings sessions organised yesterday, others focused on the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait. The briefings were designed to look at the opportunities and risks from legal, technical and business perspectives.

Panel members at the Iraq session comprised Ruba Husari, energy expert and managing director of the Baghdad-based advisory Iraq Insight, Peter Day, CEO, Petronor Group, developer of residential project Iraq Energy City (see box), Omar Moussa, VP Iraq, Schlumberger

and Nicholas Atencio, GM Kurdistan, DNO, an oil and gas company with 17 licenses across the Middle East.

In terms of oil and gas potential, Atencio stated that Kurdistan was proving to be a world-class hydrocarbon base. As reported by the Kurdistan Regional Government,

he stated, upstream production would reach one million bpd by 3013 and two million by 2019. More than 30 different companies from 17 countries already operate there. Opportunities in the region are there for anyone willing to make the effort, he said.

Iraqs oil production had significantly dropped

since the 1981 Iran-Iraq War and subsequent Gulf Wars, said Schlumbergers Moussa. That said, he predicts significant growth, doubling 1979s peak production of 3.5 million bpd in the coming years. At the same time, the country has been deprived of the technology to fully exploit the opportunities. It

will be essential to address this in future, he said.

Despite the countrys rich reserves, only one third of foreign direct investment is energy-related, primarily focused on Basra and Baghdad, said Petronors Day. And while there is growing stability and opportunities (violent incidents dropped from more than 10,000

in 2006 to under 2000 in 2012), there are still some major challenges to doing business. Outside of the main cities, cell phone coverage can be negligible, while the internet, a major business commodity, remains expensive. There are still some major interruptions in utilities infrastructure, along with a lack of top-level medical services.

Nevertheless, the government is providing investment incentives, not least to oil and gas operators. The Private Investment and Refining Law from the 2005 Constitution states allows companies to build, own and operate refineries on 20-year land leases, said Husari. Free zones are also in their early stages of development under the Ministry of Finance. The federal budget of 2013 has also allocated US$14 billion to the upstream sector.

Exhibiting for the fourth time at ADIPEC, Honeywell Analytics is displaying its range of gas detection units. These are either fixed, non-transportable units for in-situ use, or portable for use in confined spaces for example.

The units measure the percentage of a potentially dangerous gas in the air, an explosive gas or carbon monoxide for instance,

said Ian Adamson, sales director, EMEAI. If it gets over a certain level, a warning alarm goes off.

The company is headquartered in the Middle East from its offices in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and has had a presence in the region for the past 30

years. Apart from its functionality, the most important aspect of its gas detection range is the after sales service element. Were talking about life-saving equipment, he commented. If you dont maintain it youre putting lives at risk.

The Middle East represents around 20 percent of Honeywell Analytics global business. No wonder then, as far as Adamson

is concerned, ADIPEC is a must attend event.

Its one of the few shows you know you can come to and guarantee a certain number of attendees, he said. In this part of the world there is a lot of thirst for knowledge with a very high quality of attendees.

Charismatic helmsman, Charlie Sinclair, managing director of Interwell Middle East FZE, says this region is Interwells second-largest region. Hes confident there is great potential for growth. The market focus is entirely on the downhole

sector of the oil and gas industry, working with national oil companies, international oil companies, independent operators and service providers. We aim to be the number one service company in well intervention, he said.

There are a number of reasons for KOC to focus on high-tech solutions, but what really brings all these reasons together is our people. We want to ensure Kuwait benefits from a strong, modern, highly technological oil and gas industry, to sustain and enhance our role as a prime

exporter to global markets. We want to contribute to Kuwaits legacy of well-being and even greater life quality standards for future generations. For this to happen, we need to adequately manage the life of our reservoirs, which cannot be achieved without new technologies. A global technology leader? Perhaps that would be a consequence of KOCs vision and strategy. In this sense, being perceived as a global technology leader would be the result of a much higher goal: a flourishing, better Kuwait for our people.

KOCs Chairman, Mr. Sami F. Al-Rushaid, spoke during the first plenary session at ADIPEC for those who might have missed it, what did he say?

Mr. Sami shared the immense growth we are planning for Kuwait Oil

Company operations, to match the targets set by KPC, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, our holding company. With a glimpse on our most important challenges, he showed we are focused on developing all our resources, conventional and non-conventional.

What is your aim at ADIPEC?

I am looking forward to gaining an updated view on the current important projects in the Middle East. We are in a vibrant region of the world, and ADIPEC is a hub where one can find all this and more, expanding the technical and managerial network in a swift way. KOC has an important participation with technical papers, in the exhibition, and is also one of the panels of the Country Briefings. I am absolutely proud and thrilled to be here.

Hosnia Hashim is deputy managing director (North Kuwait) at Kuwait Oil Company. She talks to the ADIPEC Show Daily about her role as an executive on the conference organising committee, and her companys leading role in Kuwaits growing economy.

What do you think of this years papers?

This edition of ADIPEC brings an outstanding, unprecedented number of papers. I was impressed to see the high number of submissions related to environment and safety, HSSE; many more than in previous editions. This surely reflects the interest and focus of the oil and gas industry in gaining more safety for its workers and operations. The SPE has worked extensively on these matters, to raise awareness, and recent industry efforts aim towards standardising HSSE procedures worldwide. The Middle East in particular is engaged in environmental, safety and health care. I am glad to see ADIPECs presentations will reflect this.

Stakes raised in seismic

A node-based and stakeless seismic survey is being conducted in Iraq based on a BGP-developed digital seismic system. The project is being conducted by BP. The operation spans 1800 sq km in South Iraq.

Currently we use cable, but on this project we used node, said BGP spokesman Shang Yongsheng, international deputy director of International Institute for Geophysics, who has been explaining the new system on the BGP stand in hall 10 at ADIPEC.

The system includes

an operation command package, quality control and processing package for high production acquisition.

It implements wireless job assignment and monitoring plus forbidden area alerts for 18 vibrations in an area 40 km away from base camp, said Shang.

The system can reduce manpower, enhances productivity and we can ensure data quality. It also protects the environment because it is stake-less and marker-free.

It can do everything in camp theres no need to go outside.

Triplefast sees superfast

Stephen Kettle, managing director of Triplefast Middle East (TME) perhaps epitomizes the positive attitude at ADIPEC. Kettle has seen his company enjoy its best year this year since inception, and continuing growth while this year marks the companys ten year anniversary of business in the Middle East.

Business is good: TME is making a stronger footprint in MENA and APAC, with a new office in Perth, Australia and a new JV in Jubail, KSA in 2013,

he said. He is also eyeing potential acquisitions that will give TME a larger footprint in the UAE, Malaysia and Singapore.

Growth markets are Saudi Arabia, Qatar and India.

He is keen to expand the companys footprint in order to better serve local customers in each market.

But theres no resting on the laurels for Kettle. Oil & Gas is still the main market for us, but with our acquisition of Energy Hardware in the US we are looking at power generation as well as infrastructure.

We anticipate growing sales fivefold in next five years to US $175 million across the region, with facilities throughout Saudi, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, India and hopefully Iraq, he said.

The Dubai-based firm will be marking its success with a party in Dubai in December, and Kettle plans to continue celebrating at next years Oil Barons Charity Ball at the Meydan Racecourse in Dubai.

Management, engineering and development consultancy, Mott MacDonald, celebrates 50 years in the UAE next year, and will be using ADIPEC to underline its longevity and expertise.

Mott is project management consultant for oil network modifications at ADMA-OPCOs Umm Shaif field in Abu Dhabi, and at the Lower Zakum field on a series of brown- and greenfield works to

increase oil production by 100,000 bpd.

Abu Dhabis fast-growing demand for gas from the petrochemicals and aluminium industries has led to shortages. The emirate re-injects a large amount of natural gas back into wells to re-pressurise them and increase oil recovery, but many operators are now considering replacing

natural gas with nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Mott MacDonald is conducting a conceptual study on behalf of Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations (ADCO) for the Bu Hasa field.

ADCO intends to replace 600 million standard cubic feet per day of gas currently being injected for recovery in South Bu Hasa with nitrogen supplied from Mirfa, said Hisham Alami, Mott MacDonalds GM for

oil, gas and petrochemicals in Abu Dhabi.

Using carbon dioxide in this way will play a part in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.

The company will celebrate its 50th anniversary in the UAE next year. The consultancy employs over 14,000 staff worldwide working across a network of 170 offices in 50 countries.

Exhibiting at ADIPEC for the first time, workwear and footwear brand Williamson-Dickie Middle East is promoting its recent joint venture with Dupont-Nomex, incorporating the latters frame resistant fabrics into its own designs.

It is also targeting end business.Two years ago, the firm set up a permanent office in the UAE to support its regional distributors.

Williamson-Dickie has retained a strong distributor network in the Middle East since entering

the market in the 1950s, when pioneering US oil operators introduced the Texan brand to the region. Many of the firms original distributors have remained so until today, said Clive Donovan, director of business development and sales.

This year, for the first time in its history, Shell is producing more gas than oil, Matthias Bichsel, director of projects and technology, tells ADIPEC SHOW DAILY:

A substantial amount of the energy Shell has

helped deliver comes out of wells in the form of natural gas. In fact, our ventures found the Groningen gas field (Europes largest) and Qatars North Gas field (the worlds largest). Over the years, weve become much more deliberate about searching for and developing gas fields. We explore for gas accumulations that have been overlooked in well-known geological basins, such as those of the North Sea. But we also look for gas in less explored places, from the northern latitudes of the Arctic to the southern latitudes of Australia.

Weve recently also been looking at much trickier gas resources, such as shale, coal and other

tight rock formations. We have increasingly resorted to hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to unlock the trapped natural gas, and have developed a suite of computer applications for locating sweet spots in the seismic data.

Shell has developed or licensed the technology for more than 1200 contaminated-gas processing plants. In the

Middle East, projects include our joint venture in Oman to develop the Harweel field cluster, which contains hydrogen sulphide-laden gas that will be re-injected into the fields. Shell is also supporting Kuwait Oil Company in its efforts to unlock very challenging contaminated gas reserves from Jurassic formations deep underground.

Conducting rig repair projects and EPC work for tanks, terminals, offshore and a host of other applications, Topaz has yards in Abu Dhabis Mussafah, and UAE emirates Fujairah and Dubai. One of the companys current projects is a tank farm in Fujairah with a value of US$130 million.

While the steel business by its nature is very competitive, there is plenty of work to share. Abu

Dhabi has 500 tonnes of steel fabrication work out for tender in 2013, commented William Duff, director of sales and rig repair services. Its enough to keep all steel fabrication companies busy.

Weatherfords recent record revenues must indicate the industry behemoth is doing something right. Dr Bernard Duroc-Danner, CEO, tells ADIPEC SHOW DAILY about his companys business philosophy.

Bernard Duroc-Danner is proud of a lifetime spent in the energy business, and delighted to be attending ADIPEC 2012, where he delivered a keynote speech to delegates on the first day, November 11.

The company is clearly doing something right, with second quarter revenues of US$3,778 million breaking the companys records; and the highest in the companys history.

But Duroc-Danner speaks with typical humility: I wouldnt make

too much of it. The energy business is, and always has been, a great space to be in. The company has grown enormously in the last decade, and when we grow old we should grow profitable!

No-one at Weatherford thinks this is remarkable, and we dont expect to stay at this level. We expect margins to increase a lot from where they are today. Things are never the way they should be in our industry, but its in good shape. The environment we are in is one where a company should be able to do well. Yes, there are pockets of weakness, but no one should feel markets are not good enough. Energy is a good place to be, and its always a good place to be.

Where does Weatherford see the

business in ten years? On one hand, we will

have a more challenging environment to operate in, he says. Oil and gas is now very deep, in very deep water or in high pressure environments. We need to make more with what we have, manage the process of ageing and increase rates of recovery from old reservoirs.

We also need to look harder at unconventionals but why are we so interested now and werent before? When my father was in the oil and gas business, there was no need to be interested; but now there is a need to be interested; its more and

more the focal area.There is a lot of

experience coming out of the US oil patch - we will know a lot more in ten years on how to exploit these unconventionals, the frontiers and the difficult shale areas.

While he sees growth in

the more difficult frontier environments offshore Africa, deep, remote oceans and the Arctic, to name a few and some of the majors have been vacuuming up the frontier acreage in recent times; this is not for Weatherford.

The frontier exploration is not for us. Its not a bad play, but we cannot do everything.

We are focusing more on existing reservoirs and unconventionals this is what our people are trained for. We are narrow and modest in our business. We would never have the resources to address the frontier issues with the quality, passion

and relevance needed.

ChallengesDuroc-Danner sees the

rate of introduction and adoption of technology as a big issue. On top of this is acceptance and utilisation of technology.

Demography is also a very important challenge our work is very labour intensive, he says. Unconventionals such as heavy oil and shale oil means a lot of work. Work on ageing wells can also be labour intensive too, but theres a skills gap. We are training, but the sheer number of people who have to be replaced is daunting.

We remain an industry based on field work; on being on location but it seems there is an unwillingness for engineers to get their hands dirty these days.

Rami Qasem, Chief Executive Officer for GE Oil & Gas in the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey (MENAT), tells ADIPEC Show Daily News about the companys regional growth.

GE Oil & Gas has been active in the Middle East for more than 30 years, employing more than 800 people in more than ten locations and installing more than 2,900 units for the regions oil and gas sector.

We continue to grow our capabilities in UAE. The recently expanded Gulf Turbine Services (GTS) facility in Abu Dhabi, which has doubled its workforce to 100 people, offers

enhanced levels of service and supports the energy industry in the region, Europe, Africa and Asia and the United States. We have five other facilities in Jebel Ali. Some of them specialise in valves, others in pumps; all serving the Middle East and Europe. Our commitment to expanding our localisation can also be seen in our newest

technology centre, the GE Energy Manufacturing Technology Center, in Dammam, Saudi Arabia.

In Qatar, as well, GE has a chapter of its Oil & Gas University and has committed an initial US$50million to the 13,400 square-metre Advanced Technology Research Center, where GE Oil & Gas has a significant presence.

Implementing a new maintenance strategy designed to slash downtime, GE Oil & Gas has completed the first cycle of the gas turbines modular replacement project at the Qatargas liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant, in Ras Laffan Industrial City.

Qatar increased LNG production time by approximately one week per outage. Citing the

success of this project, the International Project Management Association (IPMA) last year granted GE the 2011 IPMA Project Excellence Award for Big-Sized Projects.

By applying GEs modular replacement strategy in a cascade process, it was possible to keep downtime to a minimum. The success of this project supports the goal of Qatargas to become the largest LNG producer in the world.

As oil and gas companies embrace a future where renewable energy plays a vital role, Dr Nawal Al Hosany, director sustainability, Masdar, explains ADIPECs role in progressing Abu Dhabis emerging energy mix.

Masdar, Abu Dhabis multi-faceted company advancing the development,

commercialisation and deployment of renewable energy solutions and clean technologies, plays a key role in promoting sustainable green practices within Abu Dhabi organisations. It has a critical role in helping the emirate move from a resource-based economy to one based on knowledge and innovation.

A division of the company, Masdar Clean Energy, is collaborating with ADNOC in one of the worlds first carbon capture, usage and

storage (CCUS) project; a scheme that will see the capture and storage of nearly 800,000 tonnes per annum of CO2 currently being emitted to the atmosphere, from a steel plant in the capitals Mussafah industrial area. The CO2-rich vent stream (more than 98 per cent purity) will be dehydrated and compressed into a dense phase, then

transported through 50km of pipeline to be injected in an onshore oilfield, operated by Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations (ADCO), as part of its Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) operations.

At ADIPEC 2012, Masdar is promoting Abu Dhabis target of using seven per cent renewable energies within the energy mix by 2020.

Al Hosany, Masdars sustainability director. It is an opportunity for oil and gas leaders to share best practices and for Abu Dhabi to maintain its leadership in this area.

Panel Session 5, in Hall A at 10.30am on the last day of ADIPEC (November 14) will cover Sustainability, Environmental Improvements and Corporate Social Responsibility. The panel will comprise Dr Al Hosany; Hege Marie Norheim, Statoils senior VP for climate; Manoelle Lepoutre, Totals senior VP, sustainable development & environment, and Pete Trelenberg, Exxon Mobils environmental policy manager.

There are some definite outcomes Dr Al Hosany would like to see from

the panel discussion. You can see from the level of engagement that oil companies are taking renewables very seriously, she comments. Oil and gas companies have major financial resources to help advance the renewables sector. I would like to see high-level sustainability discussions and actual examples of how they are addressing this issue.

Dr Al Hosany is also director of the 2013 Zayed Future Energy Prize, which rewards individuals, schools and large and small organisations, both for-profit and non-profit, for their sustainability and renewable energy initiatives. Total prize money is US$4 million and the winners will be announced on January 15, 2013.

Hitting the hotspot

Mobile satellite services operator, Thuraya Telecommunications Company, has caught attention recently as a product innovator and award winner.

At ADIPEC, Thuraya is featuring its XT-Hotspot; a pocket-size wi-fi router connecting multiple users to

the internet via their smartphones, laptops and tablets, over the companys mobile satellite network. As the company claims, it is the only wi-fi router offering a plug and play solution with the fastest satellite data speeds on a handheld of up to 60 kbps in the most remote of areas.

In October of this year, the company also

became a recipient of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Humanitarian Award in recognition of its contribution to utilising information and communication technologies to save lives during emergencies.

In terms of the companys involvement

Ian Stokes, CEO of the EIC, said: The UK has an enviable reputation for excellence in design, engineering and manufacturing for the oil and gas industry. The Middle East region has long been a key market for UK companies and ADIPEC has repeatedly proven itself to be a great facilitator for our members wanting to do business in the region.

According to data from EICDataStream, the EICs global energy project

database, total spend in developing, redeveloping and enhancing oil and gas production in the Middle East region is expected to be over US$445 billion over the next decade. EIC staff will be on hand to give live demonstrations of EICDataStream, the EICs global online energy database that tracks over 9600 active and future projects worldwide.

A big part of Schneider Electrics presence at ADIPEC this year is to communicate its recent

acquisition in May 2011 of energy management firm, Telvent. Both firms share a stand in Hall 1. This adds to the firms integrated

product capabilities in areas such as pipeline management, oil and gas extraction, safety and security applications.

French company Schneider is no new entrant to the Middle East, having operated in the region for the past 25 years. Most of the companys oil and gas related business is in the Middle East, primarily the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Through this aqcuisition, we have doubled our capacity

in energy management software, a strategy we began to pursue in the early 2000s, said Patrick Albos, Schneiders VP, oil and gas solutions. These include applications such as Telvent Smart Grid. We are very committed to furthering energy efficiency in the region.

We are aiming to get a bigger, better location at ADIPEC next year. So far this year weve had an extremely encouraging response.

The global oil and gas industry faces a plethora of challenges, according to a recent report from OilCareers.com, the international job board for the oil and gas industry, produced in association with Air Energi, a global provider of manpower to the energy sector.

Focusing on employment and salary trends throughout 2012, the report, The Global Oil & Gas Workforce Survey: Expectations for hires and pay rates in the oil and gas industry H2 2012, addresses issues affecting the oil and gas industry. More than 170,000 oil and gas professionals were invited to participate from over 50 countries within

the seven major oil and gas producing regions.

Offshore oil and gas projects worth approximately US$87billion are currently planned or underway in the Middle East. The strong performance of the sector is reflected in the regions workforce, particularly as the region continues

to offer some of the most competitive packages across the global energy industry.

Figures suggest the Middle East leads the way in terms of operational focus. Staffing practices that match international standards are gaining popularity to ensure the right talent is hired and receives sufficient training.

Mark Guest, MD of OilCareers.com, said:

Local content regulations where foreign operators are required to prove they have made every effort to recruit from local sources and to use indigenous business channels are however proving particularly challenging in a number of regions including Africa, the Americas and parts of Australasia.

Internationally,

operators are embarking on a large number of major investments, benefitting greatly from technological advancements. Yet major challenges remain with access to skilled labour a pivotal concern, combined with a global shortage of those with the necessary experience to help companies fully realise the potential of these opportunities.

Acquisition and expansion

Established in 1974, UAE-headquartered Lamprell provides diversified engineering and contracting services to the regions onshore/offshore oil, gas and renewable energy industries, and has always been an active participant at ADIPEC.

This year the firm has two stands. One is part of local service agent, NAMAs, stand (6030) while a larger stand will represent all its group businesses (11000A).

Having played a prominent role in the development of the Arabian Gulf offshore

rigs industry for more than 30 years, Lamprell employs over 11,000 people across its facilities in Hamriyah, Sharjah and Jebel Ali in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Group revenues in 2011 were $1,147.9 million.

This is our first attendance since acquiring MIS in July 2011, and we are using this opportunity to

highlight the diverse business offering and positioning of the enlarged group, said Ian Anderson, Lamprells Marketing Manager.

This consists of our core businesses such as jack-up rig refurbishment, new build jack-up drilling rigs, oil and gas related offshore construction and land rig services, but also introduces some of the newer businesses such as engineering/construction and service divisions.

These specialised technical service divisions include operations and

maintenance, INSPEC (NDT, mechanical and calibration services), Sunbelt H2S safety services, and production chemicals. Among the companys current rig-building activities are five jack-ups it is constructing for Abu Dhabis NDC (National Drilling Company), the first of which was delivered earlier this year.
