our way out of it as well.

Everyone can come up with ideas

We need many ideas

We need crazy ideas – No criticism

Sketch or write (but no, sketch) each idea on separate post-its

Postcard from 1900: Crazy? Maybe…

Page 7: ‘Design Thinking for Sustainable Development’cemusstudent.se/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Cemus... · If we can design our way into this mess, we can design our way out of it as

Stretching the brain and body

Take 3 – 4 interesting insights from your previous problem analysis

Formulate 6 – 10 Design Criteria (‘tick-able’)

Complete ‘Our design solution/strategy must be…’ … safe to use for children from 3 – 9 years?

… cheaper than 100 SEK?

… accessible for people in wheelchairs?

… free from fossil fuels?

… or…

Page 9: ‘Design Thinking for Sustainable Development’cemusstudent.se/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Cemus... · If we can design our way into this mess, we can design our way out of it as

Critically review each idea (also the crazy ones)

Check which ideas meet your criteria

Don’t immediately dismiss ideas which don’t meet all your criteria – what can you learn from these ideas?

Combine different ideas to meet your criteria

Keep it crazy!

Page 10: ‘Design Thinking for Sustainable Development’cemusstudent.se/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Cemus... · If we can design our way into this mess, we can design our way out of it as

From idea(s) to strategy: detail, complexity, make it concrete

Iterate, repeat, revise, continue, go back and again

Continue to generate ideas, go back to old ideas

Prototype, trial, fail, test, go back and again

Talk to people

Page 11: ‘Design Thinking for Sustainable Development’cemusstudent.se/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Cemus... · If we can design our way into this mess, we can design our way out of it as

Try the ‘Starbursting’- technique:

who

what when

how where

why

Answer all these question as elaborately as possible to check if your strategy is complete

Page 12: ‘Design Thinking for Sustainable Development’cemusstudent.se/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Cemus... · If we can design our way into this mess, we can design our way out of it as

Develop a scenario

Create a story for your strategy, for example as a comic book or better yet, act it yourself. ‘Walk’ through all the steps – is your strategy complete? Think of the details! Change the circumstances in the story, e.g. heavy weather, shocks to the economy, etc. Does your strategy still work?
