FROM THE ARLINGTON COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONDear Friends,

The Arlington Community Foundation is here to assist individuals, orga-nizations and corporations with their philanthropic goals. In 2015, the Arlington Community Foundation worked every day with generous in-dividuals, organizations and corporations that want to have an impact in the community and come to the Arlington Community Foundation as their local home to carry out their charitable giving.

We address needs in the community through our grants program, and as the largest private provider of scholarships in Arlington. We are proud to have awarded $770,000 in grants to nonprofits in 2015 in the areas of health, education, recreation, the environment, social services and homelessness. The Foundation also supported 160 stu-dents through $385,000 in scholarships last year.

Thanks to our generous supporters, since inception, the Foundation has awarded over $14 million in grants and scholarships.

The needs of local nonprofits are being addressed through the Foundation’s Arlington Nonprofit Center, which in 2015 completed its first full year of operations and produced a Safety-Net Nonprofits Report highlighting the important work and economic impact of safe-ty-net nonprofits. The Center has been embraced by the Arlington nonprofit community which is excited about the possibilities for re-search, partnerships and convening to strengthen the work that they do. We thank our founding partner Marymount University for providing a home for the Center’s first year of operations.

We are fostering the growth of the next generation of philanthropists to address needs in the future. Our young professionals group, NextGen-Now, raises funds for grants to nonprofits the group selects-- and our high school Arlington Youth Philanthropy Initiative (AYPI) inspires teen philanthropic projects and awarded 3 grants in 2015.

We are thankful for so much – our donors, our donor advisors, the nonprofits who entrust us with managing their funds, our grantees for the work they do, our trustees and volunteers. We are thankful to you for helping us sustain and enhance the community where we work, learn, play and call home – Arlington—and look forward to an even more successful 2016!

Sincerely,

Brad Coyle Wanda L. PiercePresident, Board of Trustees Executive Director

Grantmaking is one of the ways we at the Arlington Community Foundation meet the needs of the community. In 2015, the Foundation awarded over $771,000 in competitive and donor-advised grants to 130 organizations. We continue to innovate in the grants area by adding new grants such as the new STEM Workforce Development Teacher Fellowships. Some of the grants offered in 2015 included:

“Every day hundreds of women, men and children in our community are impacted by domestic violence,

sexual assault and homelessness. Your supportgoes such a long way in changing lives!!!”

The Arlington Community Founda-tion has been addressing the needs of the community through scholarships since 1995.  We are the largest private provider of schol-arships to high school students in Arlington.

In 2015, the Foundation awarded 160 scholarships totaling $385,000.  We managed 45 scholarship funds to meet a variety of community needs and personal charitable purposes, whether it is memorializing a loved one, promoting study of a particular field, or recognizing a demographic group that you strongly care about. You too can establish your own scholarship fund or support an existing fund and make a difference in a student’s life!

“Your faith in my ability to succeed will be a strong driving force for me and it will always inspire me to be

the best student I can be.”

ADDRESSING COMMUNITY NEEDS THROUGH

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS & LEGACY PLANNING

In 2015, the Arlington Community Foundationmanaged over 153 charitable funds, representing

over $13 million in assets.

These funds include:

Donor Advised Funds – Individuals, families and companies specify grants to organiza-tions or areas of interest of their choice. Do-nors receive a tax deduction at the time the donation is made and can recommend distri-butions at any time, even years in the future.

Scholarship Funds – Donors name the fund and establish the criteria, and the Founda-tion administers the scholarship program and screens applicants to select those best matching the donor’s criteria.

All funds benefit by being included in the managed investment pool, and the Foundation handles the accounting and administration for all the funds. Contact us to discuss your philanthropic goals.

THE NEXT GENERATION AT WORKWe believe that philanthropy and changing our community starts early, and is an effort better approached as a team. This is why at the Arlington Community Foundation we have pioneered several initiatives to encourage the next gen-eration of philanthropists, and we have partnered with key stakeholders in the community.

ARLINGTON YOUTH PHILANTHROPY INITIATIVE (AYPI)AYPI is a group of students from area high schools that is committed to making a difference in Arlington. The group makes decisions on grants to fund youth-ini-tiated projects and works to grow the Fund for Youth Philanthropy.

NEXTGENNOW (NGN) YOUNG PROFESSIONALSNGN is comprised of professionals in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s. Members com-bine their philanthropic giving and raise funds toward an annual cause, which has a greater impact than giving as individuals. NGN’s contributions are invest-ed in a fund that allows members to make a difference today and in the future.

FOUNDATION INITIATIVESPROFESSIONAL ADVISORS COUNCIL (PAC)The Professional Advisors Council consists of top estate, wealth management, accounting, tax planning and insurance professionals. The Council is an invalu-able sounding board for the Foundation’s planned giving, gifting and service strategies. The Professional Advisors Council assists the Foundation in our roles in connecting donors with the causes they care about and building a stron-ger community both now and in the future.

ARLINGTON NONPROFIT CENTERThe Arlington Nonprofit Center is a knowledge hub for Arlington’s nonprofits. It leverages the reach of the Arlington Community Foundation as community con-nector, convener and catalyst to strengthen nonprofits. By sharing the collective wisdom and resources of nonprofits, local government, universities, business-es, and the faith community, we can better address critical community needs. The Foundation’s Center is a means of extending our investments in Arlington nonprofits.

For further information on how to join in any of these initiatives, please email [email protected].
