While chatting with a parent at pick up time he asked a great question, ‘Why do we call it the STEAM Room?’ It
reminded me that it is very typical of The Department of Education to over use acronyms to describe things that are
‘wordy’ and that others might have wondered the same thing. You may hear the acronym STEM being used in the
media when talking about future focused learning. “STEM” represents science, technology, engineering and maths.
“STEAM” represents STEM plus the arts – humanities, language arts, dance, drama, music, visual arts, design and
new media.
At Merewether Public we are proud of our focus of getting our children back to basics through the “three Rs” of
reading, writing and arithmetic through our ‘Daily 5’ focus on literacy and our hands on approach to maths. For
educators, there is now a greater need for STEAM to help drive integrated learning across the wider curriculum. We
know this because business and industry broadcast that future-ready employees need to have multiple areas of
expertise or at least appreciate how a range of skills fit together. In our STEAM Room often see their students
making connections between concepts and solving problems in new and exciting ways. They demonstrate this by
active engagement, their discoveries visible in enthusiastic “aha” moments. The students love going there to learn
and the staff and I love spending time with the classes enjoying the look on their faces as they make these
connections. Take a moment to chat with your child about the things going on in our fabulous STEAM Room!
Regional Athletics
Congratulations to Heath W on qualifying for the Discus at the Regional Athletics carnival. What
a great effort and we wish him all the best at the next level .
Book Week Parade
Students and teachers alike went to great efforts last week for Book Week. Amazing costumes within all classes. It
was fantastic to see students in the playground with their new book open and enjoying literature. Thank you Mrs
Penn and the library monitors for making Book Week such a success. Keep reading!

Cooking Classes
What a great experience all our students are having in the cooking classes. We have decided to include all the
recipes in this newsletter so students will be able to cook for their families.
Pizza
Ingredients
2 cups self-raising flour, plus more for dusting
1 cup full fat Greek yoghurt
Pizza sauce and shredded cheese for topping.
Method
1 Put a pizza stone or inverted baking sheet on the centre rack of the oven and preheat to 220 degrees Celsius
2 Put the flour and yoghurt in a large bowl and mix with a fork until a shaggy dough forms. (The dough may
appear dry and crumbly at first, but it will come together as you mix it.) Turn the mixture out onto a lightly
floured work surface and knead until the dough is smooth and slightly elastic, about 8 minutes, dusting with
more flour if necessary. If the dough feels too dry, add water, a tablespoon at a time and continue kneading
until it is soft and pliable. Divide the dough in half, roll into balls and then use a rolling pin to roll out into two
10-inch pizzas. Dust the back of another inverted baking sheet or pizza peel with more flour, semolina or
coarse cornmeal and place a circle of dough on top.
3 Top the dough round with sauce and shredded cheese as desired, leaving a half-inch bare border around the
edge. Slide the pizza onto the preheated stone or baking sheet in the oven. Alternatively, roll out the dough
on a baking sheet, top as desired and put the sheet in the oven to bake. Cook until the crust is golden and
the cheese is bubbling, 8 to 10 minutes. Using a large spatula, transfer the pizza to a cutting board and let sit
5 minutes. Repeat with the remaining dough round.

medium heat. Add eggs. Swirl over the base to form an
omelette. Cook for 2 minutes or until set. Transfer to a
chopping board. Set aside to cool slightly. Cut into short
strips.
