Iowa 4-H Youth

Conference 2017

Save the date for the

next Iowa 4-H Youth

Conference. The conference is set for June

27-29, 2017. The theme is; Start Your Future

Here. This event is open to all Iowa youth

who have completed the 8th grade. You will

get to experience campus life and meet new

people from across the state! You will be hav-

ing fun while learning by doing, dancing the

night away, and serving the community. Reg-

Camp/Conference Reimbursement

The Dallas County Youth Committee offers

help with registration costs to Dallas County

4-H members. You may receive reimburse-

ment for one camp, trip, or conference per

year.

State 4-H Conference will be reimbursed

up to $100

Camps – 4-H Members ½ of fee up to $100

Camps – Clover Kids ½ of fee up to $50

National Volunteer Week -

April 23-29 2017

This special week is set aside annually to recognize the work of volunteers throughout America. There are nearly 10,000 volun-teers who support Iowa 4-H, so remember to say “Thank you ” to the volunteers who touch your life.

Clothing Event Date is set for

June 17

Mark your calendar and join the fun.

You have the opportunity to participate

in three categories: Fashion Review

where you sew an outfit, Clothing Se-

lection, where you purchase your out-

fit, and $15 challenge, where the total

purchase price is $15 or less. Judging

will be held from 8 am to 1 pm and the style

show will be 4:30 pm.

In order to be shown at the county fair, all ani-mals must be identified in 4H Online by May 15. To do so, log into your profile and then at the top left you will see the word ani-mal. If you have questions, you can call or set up a time to meet with Aleta at the Extension Office.

County Fair Books An updated version

will be available soon. You will find it online at www.extension.iastate.edu/dallas/page/member-info. Printed copies will be available for $5.

Dallas County Fair Queen

The county fair queen will be announced during the Dallas County Rodeo June 16. Ap-plication deadline is May 31. If you are inter-ested in participating in the queen contest please contact Sally Kilkenny at [email protected]

Historical Project Awards

The Lik Skillet Questors will give awards for a

4-H restoration exhibit entered in the 2017

County Fair. Entries must be at least 50 years

old, include a written report, with the history of

project, pictures, special challenges, and fu-

ture plans for the item. Selections will be

made by the Lik Skillet Questors. The top

winner will be a guest of the Chapter to speak

about their project and be awarded a $25 gift

for speaking to the chapter. If you have ques-

Conservation Award Dallas County Soil & Water Con-

servation District will present a $50

award for one 4-H conservation exhibit

entered in the 2017 Dallas County Fair.

FSQA– Food Safety Quality Assurance

All 4-H’ers who plan to exhibit swine, beef, goats, sheep, poultry, rabbits or dairy animals at the Dallas County Fair or the Iowa State Fair are required to be FSQA certified. All youth in grades 4-6 need to attend the workshop. Youth in grades 7-12 may test out. If you have tested in the past check your profile in 4H Online to see if you need to test this year.

Dog Obedience

Class

Paula and Steve Exline

will be offering dog obedi-

ence classes again this

year. Classes are sched-

uled to start April 3 at 6:30 pm on the fair-

grounds. The cost is $5 per 4-H member.

Please bring rabies certificate to the first

class. If you have questions contact Aleta.

Sheep/Market Goat Weigh-in April 29, 2017 8-11 am

All market lambs and meat goats must be

weighed if you want to show at the Iowa State

Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben. Breeding ewes must be

tagged and have retinal images for state

fair.

County tag $1.50

State Fair tag $5.00

Swine

You should have received

an email about showing

swine at the county and

state fair please check it for

complete details.

We have will not hold a swine weigh-in. How-

ever all animals must be tagged, vaccinated

for Erysipelas, and entered in 4H Online by

May 15th

. You will need to stop at the exten-

sion office to purchase ear tags at $1.50 each,

and pick up the Erysipelas vaccine. Please

bring a clean syringe and needle to get the

vaccine or you may obtain it from your vet.

The first vaccination must be given by April 15

with a second one 21 days before the fair.

If you plan to exhibit any pigs at the Iowa

State Fair you will need to be tag those pigs

with a special DNA tag, which can be pur-

chased at the extension office for $8.00 per

tag. You will need to enter your animal infor-

mation into 4-H online. This needs to be done

online before MAY 15th

. You will need to fill

out the state fair entry by July 1st

.

Hands to Larger Service

Thank you to all the 4-H members, families

and volunteers for making this a very suc-

cessful event. With your help we collected

over 1500 pounds of food and $850 in cash

donations to help the food pantries and back-

pack programs in Dallas

County. Volunteers

shared information and ac-

tivities at booths during the

event.

Day Camps - Waukee

Racing Challenge w/radio controlled cars

Youth in grades 6-8 will work together to de-sign a logo and learn how to modify a race ve-hicle for superior performance. Teams will use diagnostic techniques and equipment to tune a 1:10 scale radio controlled race car to per-fection. After racing their cars and assessing results, teams will use math and physics to calibrate suspension, adjust tires and alter other factors to improve performance and aerodynamics. Location: Centennial Park Basketball Court Time: 9 am-12 pm Date: July 24-26 Fee: $60 Grades: 6-8

Kids in the Kitchen (grades K-4) Eating healthy and cooking skills go hand in

hand. Kids will have the opportunity to prepare

and taste healthy foods while learning about

healthy eating and physical activity along with

food and kitchen safety.

Location: Waukee Community Center Time: 9 am-12 pm Date: June 19- 20 Fee: $50

Babysitting Clinics We are offering babysitting workshops for $20 in

the following communities this summer. For

Dallas County Youth represents 4-H at the Iowa Extension Councils Legislative Day

Zach Harnden along with Extension Council mem-

bers Brent Schwenneker and Nicki Stajcar met with

Representative Ralph Watts during their time at the

Iowa State Capitol.

Required Annual Leader Training If you did not attended the face to face training

for this year you must do the online training be-

fore July 1. To access it you will use 4Honline

with your family log-in and at the top left in your

profile you will see “trainings”. Choose sign up

for training and select “2016-17 Leader Training
