The Problem Residents in the Southeastern United States have come to accept warm temperatures and high humidity levels, as long as air conditioned buildings offer comfort and relief. But what happens when air conditioning systems are old, rundown and cause indoor air quality problems for building occupants? Unfortunately, this was the case for a growing number of schools in Atlanta, GA. Schools in this area were using substandard air conditioning systems that resulted in poor indoor air quality. Excessive mold and mildew were causing student and staff health complaints, absenteeism, poor school performance and musty smelling classrooms, which led school administrators to look for cost-effective and reliable air conditioning solutions. The Solution Brake Hegyan, Inc. (BHI), a sales representative for Fedders Addison Company, introduced Addison’s Packaged Rooftop DC units to schools in Gwinnett County, Atlanta and they quickly became the air conditioning unit of choice throughout metropolitan Atlanta. “What these schools needed were air conditioning systems that used 100% outside air and had dehumidification control and energy recovery wheels – all at an affordable price. Addison DC units were the clear solution,” said Bill Druitt, Sales Manager at BHI. Each DC unit is a packaged cooling and/or heating system designed to accept a variety of factory-installed options for dehumidification, ventilation, corrosion control, electrical control and refrigeration control. The cabinet design provides space for a number of these options, including 100% outside air applications and the use of desiccant wheels. DC units can be specially configured to suit the needs of any school. The Results After several Addison DC models were installed in schools in Gwinnett County, teachers, administrators, students and parents were all impressed with the results. These units provide a reliable air conditioning system that not only improved the indoor quality of these schools, but the overall learning environment as well. “Mold, mildew and humid air diminished and musty smelling classrooms were no longer such a problem.
