PART 1 GENERAL

1.01 SECTION INCLUDES

A. Countertops.

1. Type: High Pressure Decorative Laminate. and Solid Surfacing.

B. Preparation for installing utilities.

1.02 SUBMITTALS

A. See Section 01 30 00 - Administrative Requirements, for submittal procedures.

B. Shop Drawings: Indicate materials, component profiles, fastening methods, jointing

details, and accessories.

1. Scale of Drawings: 1-1/2 inch to 1 foot, minimum.

2. Show location of each casework item using dimensioned plans and elevations, minimum scale 1/4 inch to 1 foot.

3. Provide large-scale detail drawings showing attachment devices, and other components.

4. Indicate materials, finish colors, sinks, fittings, hardware, and other accessories.

5. Indicate sink centerlines, locations of steel counter supports, access panels and Owner furnished under counter accessories indicated.

6. Show furring, blocking, strapping, grounds and other anchoring devices, and hanging strips, including concealed blocking/strapping/reinforcement.

7. Indicate locations of cutouts and holes for plumbing, mechanical, or electrical fixtures, special systems, and accessories.

C. Product Data: Provide data for each type of product and process specified in this section

and incorporated into items of architectural woodwork during fabrication, finishing, and

installation.

D. Samples: Submit actual sample items of proposed plastic laminate, demonstrating

quality, and finish.

E. Qualification data for firms and persons specified in "Quality Assurance" article to

demonstrate their capabilities and experience.

1. Provide a list of completed projects, including project name, address, name of Architect and Owner, and other information specified.

1.03 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. AWI/AWMAC/WI (AWS) - Architectural Woodwork Standards; Architectural Woodwork

Institute, Architectural Woodwork Manufacturers Association of Canada, and Woodwork

Institute; Current Edition.

1. Countertops: Section 11. Grade specified in Part 2.

B. Manufacturer Qualifications:

1. Company specializing in fabricating the products specified in this section with minimum 10 years of experience.

2. Shall be considered a custom cabinet shop and a Member of AWI or WI

3. Company with at least one project in the past 5 years with value of woodwork within 20 percent of cost of woodwork for this Project.

4. Complete knowledge of AWS standards.

C. Installer Qualifications: Employee of manufacturer or subcontracted to manufacturer.

1.04 MOCK-UP

A. Provide mock-up of typical countertop, including hardware, finishes, and plumbing

accessories.

B. Locate where directed.

C. Mock-up may remain as part of the Work.

1.05 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Protect units from moisture damage.

B. Protect woodwork during transit, delivery, storage, and handling to prevent damage,

soiling, and deterioration.

C. Do not deliver woodwork until painting, wet work, grinding, and similar operations that

could damage, soil, or deteriorate woodwork have been completed in installation areas. If

woodwork must be stored in other than installation areas, store only in areas whose

environmental conditions meet requirements specified in "Project Conditions."

1.06 FIELD CONDITIONS

A. Environmental Conditions: Obtain and comply with Woodwork Manufacturer's and

Installer's coordinated advice for optimum temperature and humidity conditions for

woodwork during its storage and installation. Do not install woodwork until these

conditions have been attained and stabilized so that woodwork is within plus or minus 1.0

percent of optimum moisture content from date of installation through remainder of

construction period.

B. Field Measurements: Where woodwork is indicated to be fitted to other construction,

check actual dimensions of other construction by accurate field measurements before

manufacturing woodwork; show recorded measurements on final shop drawings.

Coordinate manufacturing schedule with construction progress to avoid delay of Work.

1. Verify locations of concealed framing, blocking, reinforcements, and furring that support woodwork by accurate field measurements before being enclosed. Record measurements on final shop drawings.

2. Where field measurements cannot be made without delaying the work, guarantee dimensions and proceed with manufacture of woodwork without field measurements. Provide allowance for trimming at site and coordinate construction to ensure that actual dimensions correspond to guaranteed dimensions.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 MANUFACTURERS

A. Manufacturer: Custom Cabinet Shop must meet the requirements indicated under

Quality Assurance Article in Part 1.

2.02 MATERIALS

A. General:

1. Provide materials that comply with reference standard and specified requirements.

2. Wood fabricated from old growth timber is not permitted.

3. Formaldehyde Free: Provide composite wood products with no added formaldehyde, made without urea-formadehyde adhesives or binders.

B. Minimum Thickness (unless otherwise noted or as required by AWS): Nominal 3/4 inch.

C. Plywood: Produced in accordance with ANSI/HPVA-HP-1; shop-sanded, exterior-grade,

seven-ply veneer-core solid and jointed interplies (PS 1-07; Section 5.8.1)

1. Provide APA rated Marine Grade.

D. Window Sills: Clear white pine; prime and prepare for paint finish, all sides.

E. Solid Surfacing Countertops: Solid surfacing sheet or plastic resin casting over

continuous substrate.

1. Flat Sheet Thickness: 1/2 inch, minimum.

2. Solid Surfacing Sheet and Plastic Resin Castings: Complying with ISFA 2-01 and NEMA LD 3; acrylic or polyester resin, mineral filler, and pigments; homogenous, non-porous and capable of being worked and repaired using standard woodworking tools; no surface coating; color and pattern consistent throughout thickness.

a. Manufacturers:

1) Dupont; Corian: www.corian.com.

2) Substitutions: See Section 01 60 00 - Product Requirements.

b. Sinks: Integral castings; minimum 3/4 inch wall thickness; comply with IAPMO Z124.

c. Finish on Exposed Surfaces: Matte, gloss rating of 5 to 20.

d. Color and Pattern: [________].

3. Other Components Thickness: 1/2 inch, minimum.

4. Exposed Edge Treatment: Built up to minimum 1-1/4 inch thick; square edge; use marine edge at sinks.

5. Back and End Splashes: Same sheet material, square top; minimum 4 inches high.

6. Skirts: As indicated on drawings.

7. Fabricate in accordance with AWI/AWMAC/WI (AWS) or AWMAC/WI (NAAWS), Section 11 - Countertops, Premium Grade.

2.03 DECORATIVE LAMINATE MATERIALS (PL)

A. High Pressure Decorative Laminate: NEMA LD 3, types as recommended for specific

applications.

1. Product: As selected by Architect.

2. Location: Restroom countertops.

B. Provide specific types as indicated.

1. Horizontal Surfaces: HGS, 0.048 inch nominal thickness, colors as scheduled, finish as scheduled.

2. Vertical Surfaces: VGS, 0.028 inch nominal thickness, colors as scheduled, finish as scheduled.

3. Laminate Backer: BKL, 0.020 inch nominal thickness, undecorated; for application to concealed backside of panels faced with high pressure decorative laminate.

2.04 COUNTERTOPS

A. Plastic Laminate Countertops (PL): Marine grade plywood substrate covered with HPDL,

conventionally fabricated and self-edge banded..

1. Color: Refer to Schedule of Finishes on Drawings.

B. Plastic Laminate Countertops (CTP): Plywood or solid perimeter support covered

with solid surface material.

1. Color: Corian "Modern White".

2.05 ACCESSORIES

A. Adhesive: Type recommended by fabricator to suit application.

B. Edge Banding: Use the following where indicated.

1. Polyvinyl-chloride (PVC) edge banding.

2. Product: Doellken - Woodtape; www.doellken-woodtape.com.

3. Thickness: 0.12 inch (3mm)

C. Fasteners: Size and type to suit application.

1. Seismic Restraint Fasteners: Minimum #14 pan head screws at length appropriate to assembly.

2.06 HARDWARE

A. Hardware: BHMA A156.9, types as recommended by fabricator for quality grade

specified.

B. Countertop Support Bracket: Fabricate brackets from extruded aluminum alloy 6063 - T6

in length(s) indicated for countertop depth(s). Brackets to be mitered at 45 degrees and

TIG welded, concealed side.

1. Acceptable Product(s): Rangine Corp.; Rakks EH Series; www.rakks.com.

2. Color: Black powder-coated finish.

3. Mounting: Flush mount

2.07 FABRICATION

A. Wood Moisture Content: Comply with requirements of referenced quality standard for

moisture content of lumber in relation to relative humidity conditions existing during time

of fabrication and in installation areas.

B. Fitting: When necessary to cut and fit on site, provide materials with ample allowance for

cutting. Provide matching trim for scribing and site cutting.

C. Plastic Laminate: Apply plastic laminate finish in full uninterrupted sheets consistent with

manufactured sizes. Fit corners and joints hairline; secure with concealed

fasteners. Slightly bevel arises. Locate counter butt joints minimum 2 feet from sink cut-

outs.

1. Apply laminate backing sheet to reverse side of plastic laminate finished surfaces where concealed from view.

2. Exposed locations: Cap exposed plastic laminate finish edges with material of same finish and pattern.

D. Solid Surfacing: Fabricate countertops up to 144 inches long in one piece; join pieces

with adhesive sealant in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and

instructions.

1. Integral sinks: Shop-mount securely to countertop with adhesives, using flush configuration, as per manufacturer's instructions, and as detailed on drawings.

D.E. Provide cutouts for plumbing fixtures. Verify locations of cutouts from on-site

dimensions. Seal cut edges.

1. Factory-cut openings, to maximum extent possible, to receive hardware, appliances, plumbing fixtures, electrical work, and similar items. Field cutting of sink and grommet cutouts allowed. Locate openings accurately and use templates or roughing-in diagrams to produce accurately sized and shaped openings. Smooth edges of cutouts and, where located in countertops and similar exposures, seal edges of cutouts with a water-resistant coating.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 EXAMINATION

A. Verify adequacy of backing and support framing.

B. Verify location and sizes of utility rough-in associated with work of this section.

3.02 PREPARATION

A. Before installing countertop, examine shop-fabricated work for completion and complete

work as required.

B. Measure all areas for scribe fit.

3.03 INSTALLATION

A. Install work in accordance with AWI/AWMAC/WI (AWS) or AWMAC/WI (NAAWS)

requirements for grade indicated.

B. Securely attach countertops to cabinets using concealed fasteners. Make flat surfaces

level; shim where required.

B.C. Use concealed joint fasteners to align and secure adjoining countertops..

C.D. Carefully scribe casework abutting other components, with maximum gaps of 1/32

inch. Do not use additional overlay trim for this purpose.

D.E. Secure counter bases to wall framing using appropriate angles and anchorages.

E.F. Countersink anchorage devices at exposed locations. Conceal with solid wood plugs

of species to match surrounding wood; finish flush with surrounding surfaces.

G. Solid-Surfacing-Material Countertops:

1. Provide perimeter support of either 3/4-inch-thick by 4-inch-wide plywood or nominal 1- by 4-inch members. A full underlayment is prohibited.

2. Backsplashes and Applied Sidesplashes:

a. Install applied sidesplashes using manufacturer's standard color-matched mildew-resistant silicone sealant.

b. Adhere to countertops using manufacturer's standard color-matched silicone sealant.

3. Attach castoffs of dye-lot-matched material, adhered to the underside of each countertop, to be used for future repairs.

3.04 ADJUSTING

A. Repair damaged and defective countertops where possible to eliminate defects

functionally and visually; where not possible to repair, replace countertops. Adjust joinery

for uniform appearance.

3.05 CLEANING

A. Clean exposed and semi-exposed surfaces. Touch up factory-applied finishes to restore

damaged or soiled areas.

B. Clean countertops.
