But, if you use the CD an easy way to keep track of all the important and favorite pages is to add personal bookmarks to the Handbook, as in Fig. 1. where added bookmarks are shown in orange. You can create bookmarks that will open the Handbook to any page, or add bookmarks that will open interactive equations, web pages, vendors’ catalogs, or other applications that you frequently use. Detailed instructions are given in the following. Fig. 1. New bookmarks added to the left panel are shown in orange. Add Bookmarks to Machinery’s Handbook CD

If you use Machinery’s Handbook, you probably already know that its not always easy tofind the exact page you are looking for. But, if you use the CD an easy way to keep track ofall the important and favorite pages is to add personal bookmarks to the Handbook, as inFig. 1. where added bookmarks are shown in orange. You can create bookmarks that willopen the Handbook to any page, or add bookmarks that will open interactive equations,web pages, vendors’ catalogs, or other applications that you frequently use. Detailedinstructions are given in the following.

Fig. 1. New bookmarks added to the left panel are shown in orange.

Requirements.—Creating new bookmarks in a PDF file requires Adobe Acrobat oranother application able to add bookmarks to, and save, PDF files. While almost any ver-sion of Acrobat can be used, newer versions such as 7, 8 or 9 are easier to use and offermore options. Adobe Reader, however, will not work because it is unable to edit or savePDF files.

In addition to Adobe Acrobat, other non-Adobe PDF editor products on the market maybe able to accomplish the task; there may even be some free ones.

These instructions also require that the “Complete” option be used during Handbookinstallation, otherwise saving changes may not be possible. If necessary, rerun the installa-tion with the “Complete” option selected.Where To Add Bookmarks.—Most of the files included with Machinery’s HandbookCD are protected and can not be changed. Some can be, however, and by far the best ofthese to use is the file Handbook.pdf. This file is located in a subdirectory of the location

where the Handbook is installed, in the Mh28 directory for the 28th edition and the Mh27directory for the 27th edition. Another benefit, the file Handbook.pdf is always only justone mouse click away from every other page on the Machinery’s Handbook CD. Fig. 1shows Handbook.pdf from the 28th edition with several additional bookmarks added.

It is also possible to create an entirely new PDF with bookmarks that link to your favoriteresources, topics, and pages of the Handbook. You can store this PDF anywhere, even onyour desktop, for easy access to many parts of the Handbook.

28th Edition: Handbook.pdf is the first file visible when the 28th edition Handbookopens. The file is located in the MH28 directory where the Handbook is installed. The typ-ical location of this file is:

C:\Program Files\Machinery’s Handbook\28th Edition\Mh28\Handbook.pdfAfter you add your boookmarks to that file, you can easily return it, and to your book-

marks, from anyplace in the Handbook by clicking on the words “Machinery’s Hand-book 28th Edition” at the top of the bookmark panel.

27th Edition: There are two files named Handbook.pdf included on the 27th edition CD.Either one can be used, but the file Handbook.pdf located in the MH27 directory is prefer-able and will be more versatile because it is the most central file in the 27th edition CDinstallation. You can get back to your bookmarks from anywhere on the CD by clicking onthe bookmark “Machinery’s Handbook 27” at the top of the bookmark panel.

Adding New Bookmarks.—Make a backup copy of the original Handbook.pdf beforeediting it, just in case it gets messed up. In any case, if things go wrong a new copy of thefile can be installed from the originals on the Machinery’s Handbook CD. Here are thebasic steps for adding bookmarks:

1) Decide in advance the targets for any new bookmarks to be created. The target is thedestination page that will open when a bookmark is clicked with a mouse. For any Hand-book page, determine the name of the file and page number to be opened. See Naming Con-ventions for Handbook Files, below, for instructions on determining file names.

For a bookmark that opens a web page or interactive equations, as in Fig. 2, open the webpage or equation first and record the url .

Fig. 2.

Example:As an example, we will add a new bookmark to open the Mathematics sectionto a page with formulas for right triangles, as in Fig. 1. For the 28th edition, opening page97 would be a good choice; for the 27th edition, the bookmark could be set to open page 91.

2) Next, open Handbook.pdf in Adobe Acrobat.

3) In Acrobat, use key combination Ctrl-B (hold down the Control key and press the Bkey at the same time) to create a new bookmark. A new bookmark will appear somewherein the bookmark panel with the words “Untitled” highlighted, as in Fig. 3.

Fig. 3.

4) Select the new bookmark, click on its text and change it to something meaningful thatdescribes the target. For this example, to create a bookmark that opens a page of right trian-gle formulas, rename the new bookmark Right Triangle Formulas.

5) Use the mouse to select and drag the bookmark to a logical location on the bookmarklist. Drop it in the new location by releasing the mouse key. For the previous example, dragthe bookmark and drop it indented under the existing Mathematics bookmark .

It takes some practice to drag and drop bookmarks exactly where they are intended to go,but it gets easier after a while.Bookmark Properties.—Bookmark properties specify the general appearance of book-marks and also identify a list of actions that will occur when a bookmark is activated. Sofar, the bookmark created in the previous steps has only default properties which need to bemodified for the bookmark to become useful.

6) Right-click on the new bookmark and select Properties from the menu that appears. ABookmark Properties dialog, Fig. 4, appears with two tabs, Appearance and Actions. Onthe Appearance tab, select the color and text style for the bookmark text.

Fig. 4.

7) The Actions tab (see Figs. 5, 6, and 7) allows specifying one or more documentactions that will occur when the mouse cursor clicks on a bookmark. For the current exam-ple, the new bookmark will be set up to open the Handbook to a specific page.

Various versions of Adobe Acrobat have different sets of available actions. Newer ver-sions have more options available than older ones, so depending on your version you mayneed to experiment a bit to discover which actions fit your requirements best.

Click on the Actions tab to open the Actions dialog. In the bottom portion of the panel arelisted existing actions that will be performed, in order, when the bookmark is pressed. Zeroor more actions may be listed, but normally the panel will contain only a single defaultaction such as Go to a page in this document. For this example, the default action is notrequired and can be deleted.

8) After pressing Add, another dialog, Fig. 6, appears that allows you to select a targetfile, how you want the file to open (in the current window or a new window, for example),the page number to open in the target document, and the default zoom to use for openingthe document. For this example, in the dialog that appears select Browse to locate andselect the Mathematics file according to Naming Conventions for Handbook Files, below.

For the 28th edition, select the file:C:\Program Files\Machinery’s Handbook\28th Edition\Mh28\Aa.pdf

For the 27th edition, depending on your installation, select one of the following files:C:\Program Files\Machinery’s Handbook\27th Edition\Mh27\Za.pdf or C:\Program Files\Machinery’s Handbook\Mh27\Za.pdf

Naming Conventions for Handbook Files.—Each major section of the Handbook has afilename that starts with a single letter corresponding to the edition (A for 28th edition, Zfor 27th, and Y for 26th), followed by a single letter corresponding to the section (a forMathematics, b for Mechanics, etc.), and concluding with the .pdf extension. The follow-ing list identifies the second character in the document filename according to section topic.

a =MATHEMATICSb =MECHANICS AND STRENGTH OF MATERIALSd =PROPERTIES OF MATERIALSf =INSPECTION, GAGING AND MEASURINGg =TOOLINGh =MACHININGi =MANUFACTURINGj =FASTENERSk =THREADS AND THREADINGl =GEARING

m =MACHINE ELEMENTSn =MEASURING UNITSx =ADDITIONAL CD CONTENTS

Index files are named as follows:H28CDIX = PRIMARY INDEXH28StdIX = INDEX OF STANDARDSH28LmIX = INDEX OF INTERACTIVE EQUATIONS

H28MatIX = INDEX OF MATERIALSAxIX = INDEX OF ADDITIONAL CD CONTENTS

Example:The 28th edition major section filenames start with the letter A, followed by asecond character that corresponds to the section topic as identified in the list above. Thus,the Mathematics section filename is Aa.pdf, Mechanics is Ab.pdf, etc.
