What are we doing here?

Today’s lesson is going to teach you how to add and subtract whole numbers.

To learn how to do this, you will watch several instructional videos and you will also get to practice on your own.

After the lesson, you should know how to add and subtract whole numbers and maybe even teach your friends how to do the same!

What is a whole number?

Whole numbers are really just…numbers! (1,2,3,4,5, etc.)

BUT, whole numbers are NOT negative numbers (-5,-1,-8, etc.)

What is a number line?

Writing numbers down on a Number Line makes it easy to tell which numbers are bigger or smaller.

What is the difference between Natural Numbers and Whole Numbers?

"Natural Numbers" can mean either "Counting Numbers" {1, 2, 3, ...}, or "Whole Numbers" {0, 1, 2, 3, ...}, depending on the subject.

Do you know how to add and subtract?

 1 + 1 = 2

Example: If you add 2 and 3 you get 5. You would write it like this:

2 + 3 = 5

Start with 5 apples,

then subtract 2,

we are left with 3 apples.
