Chemical Structure of MECELLOSE
What is MECELLOSE ?MECELLOSE is our brand name that stands for Hydroxy ethyl methyl cellulose(HEMC), Hydroxy
propyl methyl cellulose(HPMC) and Methyl cellulose(MC) products, which are water-soluble cel-
lulose ethers. These ethers are formed by substituting some of the cellulose hydroxyl groups
with methoxyl and hydroxyl propoxyl or hydroxyl ethoxyl groups. MECELLOSE is applied to build-
ing materials, paints, personal care, pharmaceuticals, and also used in civil construction.
Chemical Structure of MECELLOSE
Cellulose + Reactants(Etherfication)→ Cellulose ether
Cellulose + Methyl Chloride - MC(Methyl Cellulose)
Cellulose + Methyl Chloride - HEMC(Hydroxy Ethyl Methyl Cellulose)
Ethylene Oxide
Cellulose + Methyl Chloride - HPMC(Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose)

GENERAL PROPERTY OF MECELLOSE
0706 +SAMSUNG FINE CHEMICALS
GENERAL PROPERTY OF MECELLOSE
General PropertiesWater Solubility | MECELLOSE easily dissolves in cold water.
Water Retention | MECELLOSE has the property to reduce water-
loss of its formulations when its formulations are applied to water
absorbing surfaces such as a wallboard, etc.
Non-ionic Charge | MECELLOSE is compatible with other addi-
tives in aqueous solutions and provides a stable combination of
water solubility
pH Stability | MECELLOSE is stable in the range of pH
3.0~11.0. However, the solubility of MECELLOSE is affected by
an acid or alkali.
Organic Solubility | MECELLOSE is soluble in some binary organ-
ic and organic-water solvent systems due to hydrophobic groups in
its molecule.
Suspending Aids | MECELLOSE enhances the stability of suspen-
sion throughout the solution.
Surface Activity | MECELLOSE has a surfactant property in the solu-
tion where protective colloid function and emulsification are required.
Thermal Gelation | MECELLOSE's aqueous solution gels when
the temperature of its solution rises up to a specific level. The gel
returns to its original solution state upon cooling.
Thickening & Binding | MECELLOSE provides a thickening proper-
ty of its solution and improves the adhesion degree of formulations.
Film Formation | MECELLOSE forms clear, tough, flexible films
which have an excellent barrier property to oils and grease.
Lubrication | MECELLOSE improves workability, and processing
of cement based products and ceramic extrusions through its lubri-
cant property.
Emulsification | MECELLOSE stabilizes emulsions in its solution.
Enzyme Resistance | MECELLOSE provides excellent viscosity
stability during long-term storage due to resistance against fungi
and bacteria attacks.

HOW TO PREPARE SOLUTION OF MECELLOSE
HOW TO PREPARE SOLUTION OF MECELLOSE
MECELLOSE dissolves in waterMECELLOSE dissolves in cold water by subsequent hydration but disperses in hot water. Highly etherified MECELLOSE (PMA, PMB and PMH
grades) is also soluble in some organic solvent mixtures due to its hydrophobic property. We have different types of MECELLOSE whichinfluence the process in making solutions.
If the non-surface treated powder is put into cold water directly, it easily forms lump due to its quick
solubility in cold water.
To prevent lumping, put the powder into hot water(over 90℃) first, stir to disperse and then cool down
the solution with stirring.
When non-surface treated powder is used in a dry-mixing application, lumping is not of concern
because each particle of MECELLOSE is distributed throughout the final product.
Surface treated powder is specially developed to prevent lumping in the wet blending application
such as paints and emulsion based ones. To make the solution with surface treated powder, place
the powder directly into cold water. With time the viscosity fully developed-solution is prepared
with continuous stirring.
Each modified MECELLOSE shows different solubility properties. The solubility of modified MECEL-
LOSE depends on the original property of the basic MECELLOSE and its degree of modification.

SOLUTION PROPERTIES OF MECELLOSE
Dissolution of MECELLOSE- The general dissolution mechanism of MECELLOSE is shown in the graph that follow.
- Because of fast solubility of non-surface treated grade, dispersing time is short.
Stirring time
The impact of pH upon MECELLOSE solution time- The surface treated grade is dependent upon the pH of the solution.
- For paint application, the long retarded grade is suitable because of high pH condition(CaCO3, ammonia, etc)

Non-surface treated and surface treated MECELLOSENon-surface treated MECELLOSE : the viscosity-measuring of non-surface treated MECELLOSE is
impossible in cold water because of lump formation.
Surface treated MECELLOSE : Retardation time of surface treated MECELLOSE is about 20minutes at
pH7. However, the higher the pH of the solution is, the shorter retardation time will be.
Solubility in organic solvents- MECELLOSE is soluble in water, some organic solvents, or water-organic co-solvents.
- PMA type is the best solube one in organic solvents.
- PMB and PMH type are applicable to paint remover.
