    Water Activities

    The Asian Development Bank (ADB) in 2011 disbursed a totaof about $715 million in 93 water-related projects,financedunder ADBs ordinary capital resources. Countries receivingsignificant funds included the Peoples Republic of China,India, and Indonesia.

    ADB issued its first water bonds in 2010, raising a totalof $638 million. ADB has subsequently issued over$300 million equivalent of water bonds. Proceeds raisedthrough these bonds will be used for various water-relatedprojects in Asia and the Pacific.

    ADB also continues to work in partnership with donorsand other development agencies for additional financialand knowledge resources to support the implementationof the Water Financing Program until 2020. On financialpartnership, the committed contributions to ADBs WaterFinancing Partnership Facility as of June 2012 stands atapproximately $72 million.

    On knowledge partnership, ADB and UNESCO-IHE Institutefor Water Education entered into a partnership agreementon 7 November 2011. As part of knowledge sharing anddissemination, ADB convened in November 2011 a WaterLearning Week as an opportunity for Asias leading waterpractitioners, researchers, knowledge and funding partners,and ADB staff to share innovative practices and lessons learne

    On 1113 April 2012, ADB organized the first Asian IrrigationForum in the ADB headquarters in Manila, Philippines.The forum reviewed the current performance and futuretrends in irrigated agriculture in Asia and the Pacific, andidentified the roles that multilateral development banks suchas ADB should play, including the investment needs to suppothe transformation of irrigated agriculture to meet futurechallenges. About 200 representatives from government,development partners, the private sector, and civil society,including farmer groups and media, attended the forum.

    Georgia: Urban Services ImprovementInvestment Program

    Project Term: 20112019Total Loan Package: $500 million

    PROJECT SUMMARYThe investment program will improve water supplyand sanitation services in six secondary towns of Georgia,thus improving the health condition of the residents.Its components are:

    Infrastructure Improvement to support infrastructureinvestments to rehabilitate, improve, and expand watersupply and sanitation facilities in six secondary townsand benefit approximately 335,000 residents, or 38% ofurban residents in the region served by the United WaterSupply Company of Georgia Limited Liability Company.This figure covers about 7.6% and 14.3% of the totaland urban population, respectively, in Georgia.

    Institutional Effectiveness to develop capacity in sectoragencies to support more effective regulation of watersupply and sanitation services.

    Project Implementation Support with focus on detailedengineering; construction supervision; procurement;safeguards compliance; preparation of the subsequenttranches of the investment program; and a publicawareness program on health, hygiene, sanitation,and water conservation.

    Viet Nam: Water Sector Investment Program

    Project Term: 20112020Total Loan Package: $1.0 billion (multitranchefinancing facility)

    PROJECT SUMMARYThe investment program will help water supplycompanies in Viet Nam improve their performance.It will support capital investment in water companiesand cofinance the National Nonrevenue Water Program.The program will utilize a multitranche financing facilityto provide longer-term support for institutional reformin Viet Nams water sector until 2020.

    Four pilot citiesDa Nang, Hai Phong, Ho Chi Minh City,and Huewere identified for project preparation in 2008.The first periodic financing request covers Ho Chi MinhCity. Subsequent tranches will finance part of the NationalNonrevenue Water Program and investment subprogramsconsisting of water supply infrastructure for provincial

    water companies, duplicating the model established withHo Chi Minh City in the first periodic financing request.

    The target outcomes of the program are:Increased water supply coverage in urban areas

    from 59% in 2010 to 90% in 2020;Decreased non-revenue water from 30% in 2010

    to 18%25% in 2020;Increased connections to 100% of households headed

    by women in the project area.
