WHY THESEGUIDELINES?

For any symbol to be memorable and have the desired recall value, it is imperative that it be reproduced across several media of communication in a consistent manner. The most important elements to be consistently used is the symbol, it’s colour and the typography. This ensures that the audience experiences the symbol in the same manner across all media.

These guidelines have been developed to significantly improve and standardize the visual presentation and application of the symbol for the 46th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of Asian Development Bank.

WHO SHOULD USE THESE?

This set of guidelines is for the use of personnel design agencies responsible for communication or graphic designers or professional printers, who may use the symbol. The content is specific and technical. This booklet lays down standard guidelines and practices for the use of the symbol. There are very few rules but please take the time to read and understand how they work, and how they can be used together to ensure a cohesive visual identity. It is crucial that the symbol appears correctly and consistently in every communication.

As a technical guide which is meant to inform, the colours as reproduced in this booklet may not be accurate due to limitations of the printing process used. To match the colours during print production, please use the specifications mentioned.

COMPONENTS OF A VISUAL IDENTITY?

The visual identity for any organization broadly comprises of three critical components:• the logo/symbol • the colour scheme • type style (fonts)

The logo – either a symbol, a wordmark; or a combination of both the logo and the logotype, gives the visual identity to an organization. A consistent and undistorted use of the logo across various applications lend the identity a distinctive image, powerful enough to be identified, recognized and associated with the organization. Colours are a vital factor in furthering the

overall image. Through consistent use of the same set of the colour palette across different mediums, the organization can build up a very unique image in the public mind.

The type style and the fonts used consistently reinforce the visual identity and help in maintaining a consistent image throughout all the communication materials produced by the organization.

BASIC GUIDELINES FOR USING THE SYMBOL

This section explains the idea behind the symbol

and spells out the basic set of guidelines on how

to use it. It also specifies certain do’s and don’ts

pertaining to the usage of the symbol for the event

of the 46th Annual meeting of Board of Governors

of Asian Development Bank. This is to ensure

that the identity is used in a consistent manner

across all media, without diluting its essence.

Page 10: ADB meet 2013 logo

10

The symbol for the 46th Annual Meet of Asian Development Bank is inspired by the tribal motifs of central India. This approach signifies the cycle of life.

The inner triangles (smaller violet coloured as well as the larger green and orange coloured) denote the various layers of social structure, all co-existing in harmony, influencing each other and getting influenced by each other – sort of interlinking the destinies of growth and empowerment. The outer ring denotes change which is constantly evolving and growing, signifying development.

The individual triangles, when empowered to act together, join forces to represent the whole, setting the cycle of life in motion. The hand drawn visual style is simple and makes it memorable and easy to replicate across media. The small set of orange and green triangles, uniting to form two bigger triangles, signify the act of exchange and interaction in the world’s economy.

This, in essence, represents the ethos of the Annual General Meeting being hosted in India.

Alternate Horizontal Lock-up version

There might be situations where it might not be possible to use the standard vertical stacked version in a smaller/ reduced size. There are two alternate configurations of the symbol+ typography lockup:

1) The vertical version (preferred)2) The horizontal version (when there is less vertical space)

The ADB Meet 2013 signature identity is designed with few variations:

1) A standard, full signature (with the full name and tag line), as shown on facing page (vertical or horizontal)2) The shorter version of the logo symbol configuration (vertical and horizontal), useful in small size for situations where there is less space.

To ensure maximum visibility of the basic identifier in any identity, it is very important that the symbol be used in such a manner that it gets its due importance. To ensure its integrity and visibility, the ADB Meet 2013 visual identity should be kept clear of competing text, images and other graphic elements. There must be adequate clear space surrounding the identity on all four sides – a space equal to height of the letter ‘H’ in orange as it is used in the logotype. Both the variations with the safe zones are shown on this page. The artworks are created with the safe zones.

1.5 VISUAL IDENTITY / MINIMUM SIZES

The logo symbol (shorter) configuration of the ADB Meet 2013 identity, the vertical version can be used upto a smallest size of 15 mm height, as shown alongside. It is to be used for situations where there is less horizontal space. For optimum visibility of the identity, it is advisable to not use this configuration smaller than 10 mm height.

There may be situations where, the vertical space may not be enough for optimum visibility or composition. In such cases, the horizontal short alternate configuration of the logo symbol may be used, as shown alongside.

However, in situations where the colour version cannot be used due to limitations of reproduction processes, such as photocopy etc, it is recommended to use the entire visual identity (logo and the masthead) in black colour as shown on this page. Please note, that this a separate artwork.

An attempt should be made to maintain maximum contrast with the background colour. In cases where there already exists a strong background, the identity is advised to be used with the white background (clear space dimensions) so as to distinguish it from the background noise and to provide utmost attention.

Page 20: ADB meet 2013 logo

20 COLOUR

In case of a colored background, the identity can be directly printed on a light green background, instead of white to maintain high contrast and clarity of detail. This would apply to the identity, both in colour and black and white.

A design advantage in the process would be the use of the pastel coloured papers in order to save ink by printing the background. This would aid in the process of photocopy and rubber stamping to creatively follow the graphic language at the same time reducing the cost of production.

few examples are shown on this page, which should not

be done in any situation or for any kind of purpose.

To maintain a cohesive singular image across all communication material, it is imperative to follow the guidelines in terms of proportion, type and colour. The use of the symbol should be consistent and should not be distorted or changed in relative proportion, colour etc.

The symbol and logotype has been designed with a certain logic. It is very critical to maintain the relative proportions and colour across applications to ensure a robust and consistent identity.

24 TYpOGRApHY & FONTS

Like human beings, typography and fonts also have distinct visual characters. The selection of a house font is imperative for creating an exclusive and distinct identity of an organization.

The Logo and the Masthead have been designed as a singular unit and the artworks of different configurations are available in the accompanying CD as image and vector files. Please do not attempt to recreate these.

House FontFor the purpose of address line in basic stationery items such as letterhead, visiting cards and envelopes, the typeface – ‘Avenir LT STD’ is used for major emphasis in English. It is advised that ADB purchase a licensed version of these typefaces for maintaining consistency across all communication material such as, newsletters, signage etc. The font, ‘Minion Pro’ may be used for general correspondence (text of reports, publications, brief content, etc). For web based applications, the Font Arial may be used.

26 vISUALS AND IMAGES

The Identity is made flexible to be applied on a variety of backgrounds, for instance, context photographs. In this case, to eliminate the disturbance by the background noise, a white background secures the importance of the identity. The identity follows a language of placement towards a breathing corner and shares its white background with the border enclosing the image. The identity can be either placed horizontally or vertically as per the composition of the image.

The images should be carefully shortlisted in order to fit the context of economy, similar range of resolution and maintain a visual palette throughout the event.

Hence, it is made sure that the majority of images during application on all scales are given a white border complimenting the solid colours and its width being the relative height of the ‘H’ in the ADB Identity placed on the photograph.

28

The Master Identity can be supported with the custom designed patterns, inspired by the individual tribal elements in the symbols – the triangles. These patterns can be used in the following colour combinations from the Colour Palette for small and large scale backgrounds. These patterns have been presented in layers, involving a creative play in grey values and the three primary colours of the Identity.

pATTERNS AND BACkGROUNDS

1.10 PATTERNS AND BACKGROUNDS

Page 29: ADB meet 2013 logo

guidelines for using the symbol

29

The foreground elements that are placed on the patterns are coloured or white, depending on the colours of the background. These elements creatively follow the flexible grid. Hence, the system created develops a clear contrast and binds various kinds of content together with a common visual language. where white text is used, the background is hand-drawn and solid colour on grey pattern. where coloured text is used, the background is a perfect rectangle against the coloured pattern.

31

This section provides suggestions on how the

identity of ADB DELHI 2013 may be used for creating

awareness across various media – both outdoors,

and inhouse stationery and promotional items.

The proposed visual language is a very clean,

uncluttered look with lot of white space around the

logo. This gives importance to the logo and helps

enhance the recall value, across all media.

The designs of various items shown in the

following pages, are not final designs in terms of

factual content, and are purely indicative.

The EPS format is preferred for any printed projects such as publications, reports, posters, signs, booklets, stationery, stickers etc. For on-screen projects such as PowerPoint presentations, websites, blogs, films, television programmes; JPg files (depending on the application) should be used.
