    AZAMRA

Judaism for me is a home, a religion and an identity. At themost crucial times of my life, those moments that itseemed darkness would reign over me, Judaism has been myrefuge and salvation. This is not the easiest thing to share, but I feel that it is important that people know that even rab-bis face crises of faith and purpose. Judaism means so muchto me, precisely in these moments.

I want to share a teaching that has meant a great deal to me, and has beena comfort in some difficult moments. It is one of the most famous of RabbiNachman of Breslov, who is one of my primary spiritual guides.

The teaching is taken from the second half of a verse from Psalm 146. InHebrew, it is “Azamra Leilohei B’odi.” This is normally translated as “I will singto God with all of my strength,” implying that we should serve God with all ofour might and ability. This is a good thought when you are feeling strong andconfident. It is not as helpful when you are feeling weak, or depressed, when youfeel as though you have nothing left.

Rabbi Nachman was concerned that we never give into despair, something hestruggled with himself his entire life. He translates the verse from Psalms differ-ently. He said, “We should sing to God with what

    FROM THE PRESIDENTCLOSING NOTES

It is hard to believe that mytwo year term as presidentof Adat Shalom concludeslater this month.

Although this positioncomes with challenges, it alsocomes with great rewards. Ihave truly enjoyed getting toknow people at the shul bet-ter. When asked to define thethings that make AdatShalom special, I do not hesitate to say that itis a combination of our members, our clergyand our dedicated staff. When non-membersattend services, I am often told how warm andwelcoming we are.

Clearly, we have been in a period ofchange. We have weathered the immediatestorm of economic uncertainty which engulfedour entire metro-Detroit community. We haveevaluated our programs and the services weprovide to our members. We continue to workdiligently to be good stewards of the synagogue

L yricist Sheldon Harnick said it best in Fiddler on the Roof:“But of all God’s miracles large and small, the most mirac-ulous one of all, is that out of a worthless lump of clay, Godhas made a man today.” Inspired by the seventh verse in thesecond chapter of the Torah – “God formed man from the dustof the earth” – I couldn’t agree with Harnick more.

After witnessing the recent birth of our daughter, I canhonestly say that I have encountered a true miracle on three

separate occasions in my life... and their names are Maxim, Zev and Zosia. WhatI experienced in watching our newborn take her first breath was a palpablepresence in the hospital delivery room; it was truly Divine. Lauren and I are pro-foundly grateful for our three children; they are, without a doubt, gifts from God.

We are also extremely grateful for the generosity that has been bestowedupon us by so many people at Adat Shalom. Three years ago, we left the east

FROM RABBI YOSKOWITZSUMMER READING AND TRAVEL

    FROM RABBI SHERERELAY FOR LIFE

A s a rabbi, I am frequently asked questions that revolvearound the challenge of believing in God in a world filledwith so much injustice, tragedy and grief. Why doesn’t God dosomething? I don’t know the full answer to that question, butI do believe that God looks at humanity and asks us the verysame question: Why don’t we do something?

Someone who answered God’s call is Dr. Gordy Klatt. In1985, Dr. Klatt was tired of seeing so many of his patients suffering with can-cer and set out to do something about the disease. He enjoyed running andcommitted to running for 24 straight hours in an effort to raise money for can-cer research. At the end of the day, he had run more than 83 miles and raised$27,000. During those 24 hours of circling the track, Dr. Klatt came up with theidea for what has now become The American Cancer Society’s largest fundrais-er, The Relay for Life.

Every year Adat Shalom has a significant number of people and teams thatparticipate in and raise tremendous

“What have you read thissummer?” is a ques-tion others ask us or one weask ourselves as we preparefor the High Holidays.Summer is fast approachingand many of us are planningnot only which books we willread in the coming months, but to where we will travel.

Allow me to make twosuggestions for your summer reading: one, anew piece of fiction, and the other, an oldernon-fiction book.

Topping the Hadassah Magazine FictionBest-Seller List and having received outstand-ing critical reviews in the secular press is therecently published What We Talk About WhenWe Talk About Anne Frank, an intriguinggroup of short stories by Nathan Englander. Atthe focus of the opening story, which is the titleof the book, are two young Jewish couples, oneliving in Jerusalem and the other residing inthe United States. After a wide-ranging discus-sion about religious practices and politics, thetwo couples play what they call the “AnneFrank and the Righteous Gentile Game,” won-dering who among their Christian friends, who

DURING THE WEEK OF JULY 15-22, we will again host par-ticipants from the South Oakland Shelter (SOS) in LathrupVillage. The mission of SOS is to break the cycle of homeless-ness by providing lodging, food, and transportation as well asa variety of services. These include case management, coun-seling, career services, and educational classes. Adat Shalomsupports their goals by providing a safe place to sleep, threemeals a day and so much more!

It has been a tragic year for many families in the commu-nity: foreclosures and the tight job market devastated peoplewho never dreamed they would ever be homeless. As you canimagine, the need for these services continues to increase dur-ing these difficult economic times. During this past year, SOSsaw more displaced families and needy individuals seekingtheir support and services. They served 469 individuals, 35%women, 42% men, and 23% children. In an effort to preventfuture occurrences of homelessness, SOS has established afollow-up care program to assist for a full year. Ninety-five per-cent of the clients who participated in follow-up obtainedhousing. Our participation in this Tikun Olam project helps toease the burden of homelessness for this at-risk population.

Please watch your mail for details about how and whenyou can volunteer and/or make a monetary contribution tosupport our efforts. Our costs are very high and we desperate-ly need our members to provide overnight supervision at thesynagogue and “on call” members to provide transportationfor those who are employed. In past years our Adat Shalomfamily has been very generous and we need your continuedsupport!

  • Our Active AffiliatesRESTRUCTURED SISTERHOODLEADERSHIP FOR 2012-2013

The Sisterhood of Adat Shalom has been an integral affili-ate of our synagogue for the past 68 years. We have edu-cational and interesting programming, provide kiddush eachweek, have a beautiful Judaic boutique, book club meetings, provide scholarships for our youth, support Women's Leaguefor Conservative Judaism and Torah Fund, and we bringwomen together.

  • Education & YouthMAKING TISHA B’AV MEANINGFUL

BY MELISSA SERDIRECTOR OF CONGREGATIONAL LEARNING

AS WE BEGIN the period of traditional mourning associatedwith the Three Weeks leading up to Tisha B’Av (July 22), weare faced with the challenge of making this experience mean-ingful for our younger children and grandchildren, those whoaren’t necessarily learning about it at summer camp. It’s noteasy, especially when we often don't feel that connection our-selves – how can we grasp what it might have been like for ourancestors living in Jerusalem at the time of the Temple’sdestruction, and what lessons can we take from it to discour-age senseless hatred today?

For this activity, you need a child (age two and up) and a largequantity of building blocks. Build the biggest tower you can –and while you do so, implore your child not to knock it down.Beg, cajole, and plead with your child – this is such a beauti-ful tower, please don't destroy it! Then watch as your childknocks it down anyway. Pretend to be upset. Cry if you can. Then switch roles – have your child build, and you knock theconstruction down.

    1. How does it feel to break something that someone elsebuilt? 2. How does it feel to have something you've workedhard on ruined? 3. How do you think the Jews in Jerusalemfelt when their Temple was burned down? 4. How do youthink the Babylonians or Romans felt when they burned downthe Temple?

This should lead into a discussion of how when people don’twork together they can often destroy the things they lovethrough sinat chinam, senseless hatred (like knocking downyour brother’s tower for no reason). I hope that after you’vetalked about this, you and your child will sit down to build thebiggest and most beautiful “Temple” that you can. I would loveto hear about the conversations you have with your childrenor grandchildren – [email protected].

I hope many of you will stop by for coffee and conversationthis summer. We will be announcing some summer “Shoozewith Melissa” dates in our weekly emails. Watch for days andtimes. I also look forward to meeting families at our Sunday,July 1 pool party. We’ll see you at the JCC rain or shine!

SUMMER IS HERE, which means that most weeks there are opportunitiesfor our congregants to read Torah and chant Haftarah. If you would liketo be part of our summer plans, please send me an email or leave me amessage.

Similarly, I am trying to build a database listing the bar/bat mitzvahparshiyot and haftarot for our congregants. Please send me an email soI can add you to the list (if you don’t remember the reading, just sendme the date, including year of your bar/bat mitzvah and we’ll look itup). After we start putting this information together, we’ll be able toinvite you to have an aliyah on the anniversary, or ask you to readHaftarah when we have no bar/bat mitzvah scheduled.

    qqqqq

SUMMER ALSO PRESENTS US with an occasional challenge on a Saturdayevening; our services to mark the end of Shabbat usually begin at 9:00p.m. through most of June, July and August. Please join us for end ofShabbat services when you have no other plans on a Saturday evening(and, please come to our 3rd Sabbath meal beforehand, scheduled onehour before the time of services – we’re working on enhancing our sum-mer menu for this meal).

    qqqqq

DURING TAMMUZ AND AV, we observe the three-week mourning periodbetween the daytime public fast of Shiv’ah-Asar b’Tammuz (17Tammuz) and the 25-hour fast of Tisha B’Av (9 Av). On 17 Tammuz in70 C.E., the Roman army broke through the walls of Jerusalem, andon 9 Av, the Second Temple was destroyed. During this mourning peri-od, public celebrations, such as weddings and concerts, are avoided, and some refrain from haircuts. Both fast days fall on Shabbat thisyear, so their observances are delayed until the next day.

17 Tammuz is a half-day fast, from dawn until dark, observed onSunday, July 8.

9 Av is a 25-hour fast (as on Yom Kippur), beginning after Shabbat endson Saturday, July 28, and continuing on Sunday, July 29. We will haveour own service that evening, following Havdalah. There will not be acommunity-wide service as in some years past.

If you are interested in reading part of Megillat Eichah (Lamentations)at the evening service on Tisha b’Av, please contact me.

    qqqqq

REMEMBER – IF YOUR TEEN WOULD LIKE TO BE PART OF OUR TORAH-READINGCORPS FOR THE HIGH HOLIDAYS, ask them to send me an email or leave mea phone message as soon as possible. The schedule of readers is near-ly complete.

A man of many interests, he enjoys golf, exercise, travelingand movies.

“I look forward to serving with our outstanding clergy, tal-ented professional staff and committed lay leadership toensure that Adat Shalom remains a vital, healthy and growingsynagogue,” says David. “We’ve made so much progress overthe last few years and I’m excited to continue the good workthat so many have helped to accomplish.”

profess to care about each of the four friends, would put them-selves at risk and hide them in the event of another Holocaust. In this game, each of the four hold up their acquaintances toscrutiny. A reader may ask: With a State of Israel as well as astrong United States of America, why are young Jews still play-ing the Anne Frank game?

Phillip Hallie’s Lest Innocent Blood Be Shed: The Story ofthe Village of Le Chambon and How Goodness Happened Therewas published in 1979. It is the story of Jewish rescue that wasof no political or military interest, but was a strong ethicalmove on the part of simple French villagers. This book is a finecompanion piece to Englander’s stories because it exploreswhat makes good people “good.” Hallie’s book ends with thewords of Rabbi Hillel that are included in The Ethics of theFathers: “If I am not for myself, who is for me? If I am only formyself, what am I? If not now, when?” Why can’t all people beas good as those of Le Chambon, when being good is so vitallyimportant?

As for summer travel, please read the enthusiastic wordsof Jay Yoskowitz Israel Scholarship Award Winner Max Farkas(See letter below). His description of time well spent in Israelshould encourage us to visit Israel whenever we can. It is a giftthat we live at a time when a State of Israel exists. May it con-tinue to be a place to visit and to live so that our children andtheirs can experience wonderful moments such as those aboutwhich Max writes.

FROM RABBI YOSKOWITZ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3

    WE’VE GOT MAIL!Greetings from Israel

WORDS CAN’T DESCRIBE MY EXPERIENCE while beinghere in Israel. Especially, this past week during YomHa’shoah, Yom Ha’zikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut. Thosethree days alone may be the most meaningful I have hadstudying abroad. Each evokes a feeling of sorrow and pridein the struggles and accomplishments of Jews and theState of Israel that people do not experience at home. Itwas amazing to be here for each.

I attended a ceremony at the Kotel on erev Yom Ha’zikaron.Shimon Peres was scheduled to speak, and I went with agroup of friends to hear him. When I walked past securityinto the forum in front of the Kotel, I was in shock. Thiswas the first time I had ever seen the Kotel without a sin-gle person davening. The feeling was overwhelming. BeforePeres spoke, the Israel flag was placed at half mast, andthe crowd (which filled the entire forum) was silent. Whenthe ceremony ended, we sang Hatikvah, just as they do atevery Israeli ceremony, but when I turned and saw awoman crying, I realized this time was different. It wassomething I will probably remember for my entire life.

I have many more stories to tell in the weeks to come. Rightnow I am off to the shuk to buy some things to makeShabbat dinner with friends. Shabbat Shalom and my bestto everyone at Adat Shalom.

we have left.” That is to say that even whenwe are feeling at our worst, and that we donot have anything to offer God or anyoneelse, God will count what little we have andwhat little we can do as a complete prayerand offering. God will view us as 100%worthwhile even when we feel worthless.

This is particularly important to remem-ber when so many people are going throughdifficult times, not just financially, butemotionally. So many of our identities arewrapped in our professions or our ability toprovide for our loved ones and the commu-nity. We feel bad about ourselves, becausewe may not be able to do what we used to.

Rabbi Nachman said that we shouldnever give up on ourselves, because Godnever does. We can always find what is eter-nally valuable within ourselves. Even onekind deed to another person can changetheir world, and maybe the whole world forthe better.

This teaching has helped me find myselfwhen I felt lost. I hope you never need it,but if you do, that it gives you comfort andhope.

    n FROM BOBBY BLUMMEN’S CLUB PRESIDENT, 2010-2012

This is the last Voice article I will be writing on behalf of the Men’s Club, since my presidency will officially end at our Installation Shabbat on June1. Summer is a much quieter time for Men’s Club events. but your newadministration is busy working on the entire schedule for next year. We arevery lucky at Adat Shalom to have so many members of our Men’s Clubwilling to put in the effort that it takes to allow us to do so many programsand projects. We have a very active executive board and board of trustees, and we also are lucky to have many very active past presidents, who stayinvolved and help us with their collective wisdom and advice.

I am very confident that Joe Wener will do a fabulous job as president. Weare fortunate to have him. We also will again have a strong board andboard of trustees, and so we’ll be able to continue the wide range of eventsthat we have offered in the past.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as president. It has been a greatexperience for me and has shown me how much goes on behind the scenesto keep Adat Shalom strong. Thank you to Alan Yost, the clergy, the officestaff, and all of the men involved in the Men’s Club for making my time aspresident so smooth and so fulfilling.

    See you around the shul,

    Bobby Blum

3rd graders celebrate at Adat shalom’s

Chagigat Hasiddur on sunday, may 6.

and its assets. You, our members, have been wonderful in your support. Ibelieve that the changes that we have undergone have strengthened us andenhanced what we bring to the community at large and to one another. I amcertain that we will move forward with the same sense of strength and com-munity under David Sherbin’s leadership.

When I became president of Adat Shalom, prior presidents all told methat one of the most difficult tasks was writing The Voice column. They wereright! In taking on this task, I have tried to think of what has happened orwhat will be happening at the synagogue, and to let you know what is goingon. I hope that the columns I have written have piqued your interest in some-thing new, or that you have thought about something or someone you maynot have thought about before. I have enjoyed writing these columns. I hopeyou have enjoyed reading them.
