EAT NEws

Demolition of adjacent Adult Education buildings… The old buildings next to the theatre have now been demolished. A detached 2/3 storey building will be built in its place, to provide more rooms for the Adult Education Centre, along with provision of 40 additional parking spaces. Further information can be found on the London Borough of Bexley website. In the meantime, please note that access to the theatre, and the theatre car park, is from the Danson Youth Centre car park only. Unfortunately the wheelchair accessible disabled toilets have been closed until further notice.

EAT August Bank Holiday Work Weekend23rd/24th AugustThis year our annual work weekend will be happening on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August. One of the main tasks will be to clear out the props room, discard items we don’t need, and photograph and replace items that we are keeping. We are also looking to replace the carpet in the reception area and apply a lick of paint. Please remember that our humble little theatre relies on the hard work and enthusiasm of ALL its members—without YOUR help we cannot survive. Please check your diary and see if you can free up a few hours on either (or both!) of these dates to help make your theatre the place YOU want it to be.We hope to see you there.

Occasionally a person can get an idea and run with it. This is that! Two years ago at

university studying Drama and English I was presented with the challenge of writing a

script for an adapted piece of theatre. In deciding what to create I considered what it is I

love about theatre, the spectacle, the magic, the fear. Live theatre can suspend our disbelief and

take us into places we couldn’t imagine. I wanted to do that. And where else than here? This little

theatre I have loved and been a member of for the last eleven years.

Why Alice? As a child growing up I always had a problem with the Disney film version of Alice

in Wonderland. Alice was contrary, naïve and bossy and even though she fell into Wonderland

it appeared to me she didn’t make much of the journey! But this time? I could make Alice and

Wonderland different, I could reimagine the timeless story and try to bring something to it that a

contemporary audience would enjoy and also relate to.

The characters of Wonderland are similar to the humans living in London today. And Wonderland?

That strange exciting, often terrifying place?

I believe only a city like London could reflect those qualities back into

Wonderland therefore, why not blur the lines between reality and

imagination, merging London and Wonderland to create a new

environment for a more modern Alice to fall into.

But the question still remains as the Caterpillar asks so many

times, who is Alice?

How could I justify a young woman today creating such stories,

or entertain the notion that all rabbit holes, man

holes or even pot holes may lead us into another

world? It seemed a good challenge to accept.

So I did.

The core of this production is ultimately inherent to

the very origin of the story. Lewis Carroll must have

contemplated madness to write such beautifully absurd

characters. And therefore, madness is the only way to tie my

‘Alice’ to the vast history of the tale. Mental health taboos,

comedic portrayals of madmen, horror stories of people

who have become twisted by their insanity… address them

all and let the audience choose. So with that, I am presenting

‘Alice’ as a spectrum of madness and will ask you what terrifies

you the most? How do you know if you aren’t the crazy one?

Special Thanks:I am so grateful for all the support my cast and crew have given to me but would like to thank Nick Hewitt for helping me achieve all the lighting and tech effects other people might have said weren’t possible! I would like to thank Joanne Cullen for the hours put into helping me with the set and traipsing round Camden to find costumes! I wouldn’t have been able to pull this show off without Peter Nutting and Ian Long who were left holding the Tidus! I want to thank my mother, Wendy Marsh for being a supportive mentor for this production. And to Darren Cullen for putting up with me for the last six weeks and accepting I would only talk about the show! A special thank you to my son Tidus who will always be the best Director’s Assistant! To everyone who helped me in every aspect I am very grateful. Thank you.
