I need an update!

BACKGROUND STORY

WORK FAMILY FRIENDS

WHO | Monica is a young professional balancing work, family, and social life. She avoids unnecessary primping if it feels like a chore and refers professional, high performance products.

WHAT | Nail polish packaging has remained mostly unchanged over the past decade and is in need of ergonomic improvement. It is necessary to develop testing tools and evaluate user preferences and product performance. User feedback will strongly inform the refinement process and final design.

RESEARCH

I’m not good at using my left hand...my right hand looks worse all the time.

I started getting manicures because I hate that I can never get the polish on evenly.

The cap is hard to get off.

I don’t like the way the brush spreads out on my nail.

VOICE OF CONSUMER | I asked questions about context of use and the entire experience of nail polishing. Responses from over 80 females were collected through an online survey and in-person interviews.

... When Beauty School students take their State Board Exam, only 3 brush strokes per nail are allowed as that’s the proper way to paint a nail.

I don’t like when the cap is hard to get off and sometimes ,depending on the kind of polish, the way the brush spreads out on your nail.

RESEARCHCURRENT MARKET | Most nail polish packaging consists of bottle and cap-brush combinations.

COSMETIC INDUSTRY TRENDS

Consumers demand greater transparency from cosmetic manufacturers.

Brands in all industries are becoming more dependant on internet presence to reach consumers and the cosmetics industry is included.

Natural and organic ingredients are becoming more popular.

RESEARCHTESTING PHASE ONE | Since I had to start somewhere, I began with a cylindrical shape (similar to pens, pencils, paint brushes...) Thicknesses from 0.5 inch to 0.75 inch were testing in lengths ranging from 2-4 inches. Handles at 3 and 4 inches in length with 0.5 inch thickness were most popular.

RESEARCHTESTING PHASE TWO | During phase two, thicknesses from 0.5 inch to 0.75 inch were tested with varying amounts of tapering. Length ranged from 3 to 4 inches. Different shapes were tested in this phase. A square shape, 3.5 inches long with a thickness of .05 inch ranked highest.

RESEARCHTESTING PHASE THREE | Phase three consisted of testing variations on a square shape, 3.5 inches long with a thickness of .05 inch. Different degrees of edge radii and treatments of the top of the handle were also tested. Also, brush shapes were considered.

CONCEPTS

PRELIMINARY BOTTLE & CAP | I explored the option of updating the ergonomics of the typical nail polish bottle & cap. But this format didn’t address user’s concerns surrounding spilling, getting the right amount of polish, etc.

REFINEMENTNAIL POLISH PEN | This design allows a user to exercise familiar movements. It is also important for the final design to emphasize the nail polish color since this is what consumers are really shopping for.

adaptation™COLOR STUDIES | Colors are inspired by observed summer 2012 forecasted fashion trends. In addition to certain fabric hues, matching lipstick and polish will be popular. The red and pinks in this color line are designed to match lipsticks.
