EXPERIENCE

United States Peace Corps Peru Research Assistant Nov 2013 - Present

• Assist research labs at the Peruvian Marine Institute (IMARPE) in their studies on biodiversity, sea turtles, fisheries, oceanography, algae, and invertebrates. ◦ Conduct hypothesis driven research on climate and harvest driven fluctuations of Peruvian

fisheries using historic catch data. ▪ Test climate regime driven fluctuations in jellyfish abundance. ▪ Analyze the effects of ENSO and fishing activity on Peruvian anchoveta.

◦ Lead assessments of spatiotemporal trends, status, and sustainability of artisanal fisheries. ▪ Model the trends of artisanal fisheries in the department of Ica, Peru between 2004-2013,

using a GAM approach to examine correlations with environmental variables. ▪ Model blue and shortfin mako shark by-catch in relation to satellite environmental data.

◦ Aid with a GEF/UN-funded base line study of commercial resources and biodiversity of the Humboldt Current Large Marine Ecosystem.

◦ Survey long-term changes in sub-tidal biodiversity, fisheries resources, and macroalgal cover. ◦ Assist with bi-monthly sea turtle tagging and monitoring.

Community Based Environmental Volunteer Sept 2011 - Nov 2013

• Designed and implemented community based environmental programs to reduce pollution and deforestation and improve trash management and environmental awareness in the central Andes. ◦ Built 9 improved cook stoves to reduce wood consumption, deforestation, and health risks

associated with smoke. Educated families in their use and benefits. ◦ Improved agricultural training ground for local high school to increase trash management,

organic agriculture, and renewable energy education. ▪ Constructed biodigestor to provide renewable fuel source and organic fertilizers. ▪ Constructed micro-landfill to reduce trash pollution.

◦ Organized and led environmental workshops to promote environmental awareness. ◦ Lectured on English, science, and environmental education in local schools. ◦ Developed community recycling program to reduce local river pollution.

• Led local health programs to promote healthy cooking and hygiene. • Assisted various research projects through data collection including the following: ◦ Biodiversity of reptiles in the Central Andes of Peru. ◦ Land use mapping for the South American Wildlands project.

• Advised Peace Corps staff on policy and programs as a member of the Volunteer Advisory Committee.

Denison University Senior Research Program Granville, OH Researcher June 2010 - May 2011
